Labour should introduce minister for porn, Conservative peer says
Labour should appoint a minister for porn to tackle the wave of 'violent, abusive and misogynistic' images, a Conservative peer has said.
Baroness Gabby Bertin, who leads the Independent Pornography Review Taskforce, said that MPs shy away from tackling abuse in the porn industry out of embarrassment.
'We're really British about it so we don't want to have a graphic conversation about sex and porn. But you've got to shout about it as loudly as possible. The reason why we've got into this mess is because nobody has really wanted to talk about it,' she told The Guardian.
She is pushing for the government to appoint a ministry for porn to make sure the issue gets addressed. 'You can't leave the pitch on this stuff just because you're worried about being accused of being too strait-laced,' she added.
A review, commissioned by Rishi Sunak's government and led by Baroness Gabby, proposed banning degrading, violent and misogynistic pornography.
The report, which was published in February this year, urged ministers to give Ofcom further powers to police porn sites for dangerous material.
It also suggested banning online porn videos that would be deemed too harmful for any certificate in the offline world.
One of the report's recommendations, making strangulation in pornography illegal, has now been accepted by the government. Minister for victims and tackling violence against women, Alex Davies-Jones, said that 'cracking down on the appalling rise of strangulation pornography will protect women and send a clear signal to men and boys that misogyny will not be tolerated'.
Recent research published by Ofcom found that eight per cent of children aged eight to 14 have watched online pornography.
Boys aged 13 to 14 were the most likely viewers, with two out of 10 visiting adult sites.
Major porn sites, including Pornhub, Stripchat and Youporn, have agreed to implement stronger age verification measures, with platforms now facing fines of 10 per cent of their global turnover if they fail to make changes.

MOSCOW (Reuters) -The Kremlin said in remarks published on Sunday that the tougher the sanctions imposed on Russia by Europe, the more painful the recoil would be for Europe's own economies as Russia had grown resistant to such "illegal" sanctions. "The more serious the package of sanctions, which, I repeat, we consider illegal, the more serious will be the recoil from a gun to the shoulder. This is a double-edged sword," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state television. Peskov told state television's top Kremlin correspondent, Pavel Zarubin, that he did not doubt the EU would impose further sanctions but that Russia had built up "resistance" to such sanctions. President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that any additional EU sanctions on Russia would simply hurt Europe more - and pointed out that Russia's economy grew at 4.3% in 2024 compared to euro zone growth of 0.9%.

Young man in life-threatening condition after car ploughs into fountain at London Piccadilly Circus
A car has ploughed into the centre of Piccadilly Circus in central London injuring two 22-year-old men, with one in a life-threatening condition. Emergency services were called to the scene in the early hours of Sunday morning and the area has now been closed off. Pictures of the junction show a black BMW flipped onto its roof with debris everywhere. It appears to have driven directly at the pedestrianised part of Piccadilly Circus, which it home to the Shaftesbury memorial fountain popularly known as Eros. The car only got as far as the pavement and stopped short of the landmark, which is topped with a statue of Anteros, the Greek god of requited love. Two men, both aged 22, were treated at the scene, with one being taken to a major trauma centre and another to a local hospital. Police said that one of the men is in a life threatening condition, while the other's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. No pedestrians were injured and no other vehicles were involved. Ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car, an incident response officer and members of the London Ambulance Service hazardous area response team all rushed to the scene of the crash on Saturday morning. They had been alerted to the collision at 5:25am and the first paramedic arrived at Piccadilly Circus in less than four minutes. A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: 'We were called at 5.25am today (29 June) to reports of a road traffic collision on Piccadilly, W1J. 'We sent a number of resources, including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car, an incident response officer and members of our hazardous area response team (HART). We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London's Air Ambulance. 'Our first paramedic arrived on scene in less than four minutes. 'We treated two people. We took one patient to a major trauma centre and the other patient to a local hospital.' A Met Police spokesperson said: 'At 05:28hrs on Sunday, 29 June police were called to Piccadilly Circus following a single vehicle road traffic collision. A black BMW had overturned, ending up next to the Eros fountain. 'Officers attended with London Ambulance Service paramedics and the London Fire Brigade. 'Two men, both aged 22 and both occupants of the vehicle, were taken to hospital. 'One of the men is in a life threatening condition. The other man's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. 'No pedestrians were injured and no other vehicles are believed to be involved. 'There are road closures in place around Piccadilly Circus. 'We recognise the disruption this will cause. We will look to remove these at the earliest opportunity but only when we have carried out the work required to investigate this serious incident.'
