Knifeman shot by police outside holiday hotspot airport after lunging at officer
A knifeman who tried to rob a taxi has been shot and killed by police after he lunged at an officer at a holiday hotspot.
At around 4.50pm, agents Spain's the National Police had to make use of their firearms after the violent action of an individual who, allegedly, tried to commit a robbery with violence using a knife against a taxi driver in the vicinity of the airport.
During the police intervention, the aggressor pounced on the officers with the weapon, forcing them to repel the attack by using their firearms. The emergency services of both the airport and the Canary Islands Health Service were immediately activated. Medics tried to revive the individual but later confirming his death.
At this time, members of the National Police, including agents of the Judicial Police, the Scientific Police Brigade and the Homicide Group, remain at the scene. The judicial commission has also been activated.
The National Police have already launched an investigation to clarify the facts.
The man who died is reported to be of Gambian nationality.
According to Spanish newspaper La Provincia: "A policeman slipped and the attacker jumped on him. The partner of the officer who fell to the ground was the one who fired the shots."
"Police sources have specified that security cameras at Gran Canaria airport have recorded the police intervention."
"The place where the events occurred is an area travelled by the public, so there was fear that at the time of the police shooting, a stray bullet or the ricochet action could injure other people."

The founder of the Everyday Sexism Project and author of several books on modern misogyny, Laura Bates recently delved into the concerning ways that the newest AI technology is harming young women, particularly at school. She sat down with BBC journalist Samira Ahmed to discuss her latest book, The New Age of Sexism: How the AI Revolution is Reinventing Misogyny, at Hay Festival in Wales last week. She described sexism in schools as a 'public health crisis', warning of the ways in which deep-fake porn is the newest misogynistic threat to schoolgirls in the UK. Bates said: 'We have a crisis in schools. It is a national emergency." In her newest book, she explains how hundreds of free websites allow anyone to create false images of their peers, or anyone for that matter, completely naked, using only a single image of someone's face- which is easily accessible on most young peoples' social media profiles. These easily accessible, and often completely free AI-powered websites have the ability to seriously harm young girls, if schoolmates were to decide to create one of these explicit images and share it. And this AI-generated form of sexual abuse is already occurring in our schools, as well as throughout Europe, reports the Independent. Bates' research involved a 2023 case in the Spanish town of Almendralejo, where several girls aged between 11 and 17 found that AI-generated images of them naked had been circulating on social media, which had lasting and extremely damaging effects on them. The expert said at Hay Festival: 'In the years since [this incident], we've seen a significant number of these cases cropping up across schools in the UK. 'It is the next big sexual violence issue that is going to impact schools. It's just that we're not really talking about it yet.' What's most worrying about this new AI-powered threat to young girls is that there isn't much that can be done to prevent it from occurring, as pictures of our faces are widely available across social media. While it's possible to turn you or your children's accounts to private, this will not stop trusted classmates or friends from accessing their peers' pictures, which can be made falsely explicit at the touch of a button. Profile pictures are also widely viewable, even if an account is set to private. So, how can we protect young girls from being targeted by this high-tech manifestation of misogyny? Bates argues in her book that the issue lies within wider society, and policy makers and educators have a responsibility to tackle this problem from the root. She said: "This is a crisis; it is a public health crisis and it needs a public health programme. A £4million bounty was put on their heads by the US in 2022. The Kinahans, from Dublin, have a string of links to Scots crime figures, including the Lyons mob. Steven, son of former gang chief Eddie Lyons Snr, has never been convicted of a serious crime despite his crew's bitter feud with the rival Daniel clan. 'I held Scot gangster's hand as he lay dying after holiday hotspot shooting'
A brave British nurse who tended to Ross Monaghan after he was shot along with Eddie Lyons Jnr said: 'I just held his hand and stroked his hair. His eyes were open and I kept saying stay with me Ross' A British nurse has told how she held the hand of a Scottish gangster as he lay dying after he was shot during a double murder on the Costa del Sol. The woman in her 50s said she was having a drink with her partner in a nearby bar when a masked gunman killed Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jnr in front of horrified tourists. He struck in Monaghans bar in Fuengirola at about 11.30pm on Saturday just after the Champions League final ended. The nurse, who asked not to be named, said she ran to help after she heard the shots. She said: "I was sitting with my partner in a pub when we heard one shot followed by a gap and then four more shots. We all ran into the bar and I was shouting 'get inside'. "At the time they were celebrating the football because the game had just ended. Someone said a person had been shot and because I'm a nurse I ran to Monaghans bar to see if I could help." Graphic footage showing Monaghan scrambling to escape his killer has been broadcast on Spanish TV. The video was captured seconds after Lyons Jnr, 46, was gunned down outside the bar. It shows Monaghan, 43, with blood seeping through his white t-shirt from a chest wound, propping himself up on a table before collapsing. CCTV from the bar showed the gunman - who was dressed in black - chasing Monaghan. Two bystanders, thought to be a waitress and another man in black, can be seen running away from the suspect. The nurse said: "I got to the first person who was lying on his back on the terrace who I later discovered was Eddie Lyons Jnr. He was clearly dead and had what appeared to be a bullet wound in his chest and one in his abdomen. A bar lady told me there was another one in the bar. "The other man, Ross, had one shot in his chest, just on the right side. He was lying on the floor and was still alive but his breathing was laboured. He was wearing a white T-shirt and shorts and trainers and he looked younger than 43. "There was blood everywhere, on the floor and around the service hatch to the kitchen. There was nothing I could do, he wasn't bleeding from his mouth so I just held his hand, stroked his hair and waited for the emergency services." It is understood Monaghan had an exit wound in his back where the bullet had passed through his body. The nurse said armed police arrived on the scene first who moved him to the recovery position before performing CPR. Monaghan, who was believed to be the owner of the bar, was a suspect in the 2010 murder of Kevin "Gerbil" Carroll outside in Robroyston, Glasgow. He was charged but the case was later dropped. Monaghan fled to Spain after he was shot in the shoulder after dropping his child off at a primary school in Glasgow in 2017. Spanish police said on Monday that no arrests have been made. A spokesman said: "The investigation is continuing into the fatal shooting of two men at a pub in Fuengirola, with nothing new at the moment."
