Confronting racism in our schools
The latest incident of alleged racism at Bryandale Primary School in Bryanston is yet another painful reminder that South African schools still have a long way to go before genuine transformation and inclusion are achieved.
It is alleged that an Indian learner told two Black students, 'You stupid Black people are so predictable.' Such language is deeply offensive, dehumanising, and has no place in any learning environment.
This incident must be treated with the seriousness it demands, not as a 'playground misunderstanding,' but as a reflection of wider issues of racism and marginalisation that persist in our schools. While many public and private schools proudly promote values of diversity and transformation in their mission statements, these values must go beyond lip service.
Transformation is not a passive hope; it requires active, ongoing engagement and institutional introspection. Schools play a critical role in redressing the deep inequalities and marginalisation embedded in our society.
They must be proactive in creating safe and affirming environments for all children, not only through symbolic gestures but through deliberate action, anti-racism training, and clear accountability mechanisms.

Minister Kubayi praises Court Online System for enhancing access to justice
Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says no files and or court documents have been lost since the Court Online System was rolled out in September 2024. Image: Justice Department Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has heaped praise on the Court Online System aimed to improve access to justice and streamlining the litigation process for litigants. The system has been introduced in the superior courts to ensure electronic filing to initiate cases electronically and to increase efficiency and reducing paperwork. Launched in September 2024, the Court Online System has been operational in 11 courts for all civil matters in the Gauteng Division, the Western Cape Division, the Labour Court and the Land Court. The department has assured that further rollout of the system to an additional 11 courts is on track and for completion by the end of the 2025/2026 financial year, with plans to extend it to all divisions of the high court. Next Stay Close ✕ Kubayi explained that the Court Online System has two portals with one being meant for e-filing by litigants to initiate cases and the other for the evidence management system used during hearings. She also said the system has resulted in the efficient monitoring and control of the litigation processes involving all cases initiated on the system. 'It can be stated that no files and or court documents have since been lost. Furthermore, it can also be stated that overall, the system has enhanced efficiency in operations as the litigation processes are expedited,' Kubayi said. She was responding to parliamentary questions posed by IFP MP Albert Mncwango when he asked about the evaluations that have been conducted to assess its impact on expediting case finalisation and the lessons that have been drawn from its implementation in Gauteng. According to Kubayi, the Court Online System was not geared towards minimising or reducing case backlogs. 'That is the function of the number and availability of judges as well as the conduct of litigants in expediting their matters.' She stated that the Court Online utilisation figures in the Gauteng Division indicated that the total number of firms registered were 6,424 between April 2024 and March 31 this year. During the same period the total number of portal end-users registered comprised 10,150. 'These users may be also litigants in matters in other divisions of the high court and specialist courts that have gone live in using the system,' Kubayi said. In a recent parliamentary reply furnished to DA MP Damien Klopper, the minister said there were no significant challenges currently experienced with electronic filing, apart from the requirement that users must be registered before accessing the Court Online System. Kubayi also said the system was only available to legal practitioners who are in good standing with the Legal Practice Council (LPC). 'Newly admitted legal practitioners and those whose marital status has changed occasionally face difficulties during registration, as the system may fail to verify and validate their LPC registration status. This is due to the Court Online system not yet being fully integrated with the LPC's database. In such cases, manual verification against the LPC database is conducted.' Kubayi added the Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ) was currently engaging with the LPC to achieve full integration, which will enable real-time verification of legal practitioners' LPC status. The minister also said no challenges were reported with automated scheduling of hearings and trials, case tracking for monitoring case progress, storage and access to case documents, and notifications to parties involved. 'However, it is important to note that, due to security concerns and high storage costs, the system currently supports only the uploading of PDF documents. Alternative solutions are being explored to accommodate the uploading of audio and video recordings.' Kubayi noted that the roll out and implementation of the Court Online system has provided valuable lessons for the successful implementation of the system nationally. 'A stable network infrastructure is required, and thus the OCJ has rolled out an infrastructure refresh project that covers 100% WIFI coverage and network bandwidth upgrades,' she said about some of the lessons learnt.

Hawks investigate Limpopo municipality amid explosive tender allegations

Image: Supplied The Hawks in Limpopo have confirmed they are investigating allegations of corruption at the Mogalakwena Local Municipality. This comes days after Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba publicly denied any wrongdoing or irregularities relating to tenders at the municipality. However, the Hawks declined to name those under investigation. 'We can confirm that the Hawks in Limpopo are investigating a corruption case at the Mogalakwena Local Municipality,' said spokesperson Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa. 'There's a corruption case that we are busy investigating, but we cannot say it involves those two people. We are currently busy with investigations.' The municipality has frequently made headlines for alleged corruption and poor service delivery, including inconsistent water supply, deteriorating roads and inadequate sewage management. The Hawks' confirmation follows Premier Ramathuba's dismissal of corruption claims circulating online. A Facebook post shared by a user named Tshepo Ledwaba alleged that municipal manager Morris Montengo Maluleka had claimed he was instructed by Ramathuba and the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Basikopo Makamu, to approve multimillion-rand payments and hire their family members. Next Stay Close ✕ 'The Office of the Premier has noted with grave concern the reckless and misleading information circulating on social media, initially propagated by a Facebook account under the name Tshepo Ledwaba on August 4, 2025,' said Ramathuba's spokesperson, Thilivhali Muavha. Muavha said the account was deactivated following a preliminary municipal investigation. Similar claims were shared by a Facebook page titled 'Mogalakwena Corruption' and a parody X account, @generalmkhwanaz. Posts included screenshots purportedly showing invoices linked to the alleged transactions. In one post, an account claiming to be Maluleka stated: 'I want the public and my family to know about this because anything might happen to me… If anything happens to me, the following people – Phophi Ramathuba and Basikopo Makamu – are responsible, because I have carried out numerous corrupt transactions on behalf of their companies, and I have hired their family members.' Muavha dismissed the claims as false and insisted the account was fake. 'The Office of the Premier wants to be unequivocally clear: these assertions are entirely false. They reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of the operational dynamics within government,' he said. He emphasised that municipal councils and their managers operate independently of the Premier and the MEC. 'Thus, the allegations are not only unfounded but appear to be part of a deliberate smear campaign. Worse, some of the transactions being cited date back to 2023 – before the current Premier assumed office,' said Muavha. He added that even if a municipal manager were to receive such a directive, they are legally obligated to reject any unlawful order. Ramathuba has escalated the matter to law enforcement, he said, to trace the source of the 'defamatory and baseless' claims and to ensure the municipal manager's safety. The Mogalakwena Municipality has also rejected the allegations. 'As the municipality, we distance ourselves from the fake Facebook account that has been circulating on social media platforms since Friday, August 15, 2025,' said municipal spokesperson Malesela Selokela. 'We place it on record that the current municipal manager does not have a social media account. The information in that account is fabricated, misleading and devoid of truth.'
