Chaotic deliveries, colorful co-op action RPGs and other new indie games worth checking out
Hey there! Welcome to our weekly indie games roundup. We've got lots to get through this time, including some news before we highlight some brand-new games you can play right now.
Indie journal publisher Lost in Cult is moving into physical game releases with a label called Editions. The focus here is on preservation — all of the games that it releases will be available to play offline, with no updates required. Physical game preservation team Does it Play? is playtesting each release. There are premium, limited-edition versions of each game with a slipcase cover, essay booklet, poster and more, as well as retail copies.
There will be new releases every month, and the first batch includes a couple of humdingers: Immortality and Thank Goodness You're Here . The Excavation of Hob's Barrow , a point-and-click folk horror game rounds out the trio of debut titles. Really looking forward to seeing where Editions goes from here. The latest Six One Indie showcase took place this week. I've mentioned a game or two that was featured in it below ( Game Informer has a list of all the announcements), but I just want to call out a couple of things here.
The score for 1000xResist , one of the best-received games of 2024, is getting a vinyl release in October. Pre-orders are open now. Also, the game that closed out the show has somehow flown under my radar. Dinoblade is an upcoming hack-and-slash action RPG that puts big blades in the jaws of big dinosaurs. Hell yeah. Meanwhile, the folks behind the showcase have set up their own publishing label, Six One Indie Publishing.
We've got a ton of other gaming showcases coming up over the next few weeks as Summer Game Fest bobbles on the horizon. Fans of brainteasers may want to catch the Thinky Direct showcase from the Thinky Games community. The hour-long stream starts on May 29 at 1PM ET (just as the Cerebral Puzzle Showcase begins on Steam) It will focus on, you guessed it, puzzle games and other titles that should give your brain a workout. Meanwhile, a fun showcase of spy games just premiered. The 25-minute video highlights games across several genres that are largely about snoopin' and sneakin'. Deliver At All Costs was among this week's newcomers. It's an action game in which you play a courier in the '50s. As the name suggests, your primary goal is to deliver your cargo, no matter what. Reviews are mixed for this one but, hey, it's free on the Epic Games Store until 11AM ET on May 29. You can also get it on Steam for 10 percent off the regular price of $30 for the time being. Speaking of vehicle-oriented destruction, it can be a chore to get the first few Grand Theft Auto games running on modern hardware. I live for chaos and Maniac , from Transhuman Design and publisher Skystone Games, reminds me a bit of those early, top-down GTA entries (which were made in my hometown, fact fans). It's out now on Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, a little over a year after debuting on Steam. Lynked: Banner of the Spark is a co-op action RPG that just came out of early access on Steam and landed on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. With its colorful visuals, it reminds me a bit of Hi-Fi Rush , aesthetically. There's a town-building aspect to this as well. I didn't get around to digging into the game during early access. A few seconds into the latest trailer for Tales of Seikyu , I spotted a centaur, which was enough to catch my attention. This yokai fantasy life sim from ACE Entertainment and Fireshine Games is out now in early access on Steam. You can morph into other forms (including a slime!) to help with navigation and combat in this one. Centaurs and slimes, what's not to love? Here's one for the turn-based strategy/history enthusiasts out there. Bonaparte - A Mechanized Revolution (the debut game from Studio Imugi) sees you take control of units like a giant commandant mech in a battle for the future of France. Chrono Odyssey has picked up plenty of momentum, as more than 400,000 people have already signed up to try it out. The horror-tinged, open-world MMORPG from Kakao Games and Chrono Studio will have a closed beta on Steam next month. It's also set to be featured at the Summer Game Fest Live showcase on June 6. Any game from Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi is worth paying attention to. Even more so when publisher Annapurna Interactive is on board. And when it's a game that has a "call unicycle" button, I'm triple sold. Life-sim To a T tells the story of a teenager whose body gets stuck in a T-pose, with their arms stuck out to the sides. Thankfully, they have a cute pup who helps them actually do things. A delightful demo is out now on Steam, and the game will hit PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 28. We've mentioned The Wandering Village a few times over the years and the game is finally coming out of early access on Steam on July 17. It'll also hit PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch on the same day. This is a city-building sim that takes place on the back of a giant creature. I do enjoy the voxel destruction of sandbox heist game Teardown . So I was happy to hear that Tuxedo Labs and Coffee Stain are set to release another expansion next month. This time, we're going to space, as all great franchises (i.e the Leprechaun movies) eventually do. The Greenwash Gambit DLC will arrive on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on June 24. Artis Impact 's pretty pixel art made an immediate impression on me during the Six One Indie showcase. It took Malaysian solo developer Mas four years to make this cozy RPG, which is "set in a decaying world ruled by rogue AI." Although the game has a main, linear main path, there are side quests, hidden interactions and random events to experience. A demo for Artis Impact is out now, and the full game is coming to Steam on August 7.

Why this analyst sees a major box office rebound this summer
Data from Comscore reports that moviegoers shelled out more than $329 million at the box office over Memorial Day weekend — the biggest ever for that holiday. Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian breaks down what fueled the surge and why a $4 billion summer box office may be within reach. Consumers spent over $329 million at the box office over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, an all-time high, with Disney's Lilo and Stitch taken in over $182 million. This comes after 2024, which had the worst four-day performance in nearly three decades. According to our next guest though, this year's rebound could kick off a summer movie season that could reach over $4 billion in total grosses. But will it be enough to keep studios and theaters in the green? Paul Degarabedian, comScore senior media analyst joins us now. Paul, it is good to see you as always. So the Memorial Day weekend box office, Paul, a record. First, let's start there. Why, Paul? What drove that? Well, you know, we had a first quarter, Josh, that was down about 12% versus last year according to our comScore data. And part of that was March, which was down 46% versus March of '24. Then comes along a little movie called A Minecraft movie, and that blew the doors off and kept playing really strongly. And then sinners, as we all know, had one of the lowest second weekend drops ever. So both those films overperformed opening weekend, and then they've had legs, as we say in the business, long-term playability. And then the accountant two opened, and then Marvel's Thunderbolts to kick off the summer, and then final destination bloodlines. Every single one of those films has overperformed and had more importantly long-term playability. That gave the best possible tailwinds heading into Memorial weekend with Mission Stitch possible, whatever you want to call it, just really bringing so much attention to the movie theater. And that's why you see that massive $329 million 4-day domestic record-breaking weekend for Memorial Day. This is huge for theaters right now. And did you see any of those movies yourself, Paul, over that Memorial Day weekend? Any recommendations? I saw, yeah, Mission Impossible. I saw that in IMAX. And, you know, the premium formats are very important when you talk about IMAX, 4DX, Dolby Vision. You know, even though consumers are price sensitive, when it comes to certain movies, audiences really want that premium experience. And that's going to happen a lot more this summer if a movie like, if you take F1, for example, from Warner Brothers and Apple, that's a big one. Obviously, DC and Warner Brothers Superman, which is on the way. And then, of course, Fantastic Four down the line for Marvel. So I just think that is, it was the momentum thing going on, movies very well marketed, audiences are in the mood to go to the movie theater. This is after all the summer movie season, and it's really playing out well. And this ain't the end. This isn't a one hit wonder of hits in terms of, I should say in terms of the box office. We have a lot more to come. Karate Kid legends opens this weekend. That's from Sony Pictures and on and on it goes. Ballerina is up next and a lot of kids movies, which PG movies have been at the forefront of the box office for the past year and a half at least. And Paul, you say you're turned ahead to the summer. You say we're certainly looking at a $4 billion plus summer, potentially $4.2 billion plus. How, how come Paul, what gives you that, that optimism, that confidence? Yeah, Josh, that's a great question because last summer we got to 3.7 billion, but remember last summer fell victim to not having a Marvel movie to kick off the summer. Memorial weekend, as you point out, was one of the lowest grossing ever. And it's because that year, last year, was impacted by the strikes, production schedule disruption, and then chaos to the release calendar. And that threw everything to disarray, and that summer of '24 didn't really get started until Bad Boys Rider Die in early June, and then really with Inside Out 2 in mid-June. This year's a completely different story. I defy anyone to find at least five movies that they aren't super anxious to see on that big screen in a movie theater. It's almost a champagne problem. There's almost too many films. Audiences have to figure out how are they going to budget for that. And theaters have to budget out screen space, real estate, for all these big, especially the premium formats. So it's a good, good situation, much better than last year, but a lot going on here for sure.

This Small Soundbar Sounds Better Than You'd Think, and It's Nearly 30% Off
I tested Roku's Streambar SE late last year and wrote about my impressions of it, but when it got a nice discount for Amazon's Memorial Day Sale, I thought I'd highlight it again. I've tested plenty of Roku's video streamers over the years, but until last year, I hadn't tried out one of its Streambars, which combines a small soundbar with Roku's entry-level 4K HDR streamer. Roku stopped making its top-end Streambar Pro speaker, but it's now selling the Streambar SE, a 2024 mini soundbar that caught my eye because of its low price. It's currently only $73, or 27% off, at Amazon. When I say mini soundbar, I really do mean mini. About the size of a small Bluetooth speaker, the Streambar SE measures 9.6 inches wide by 3.5 inches deep by 2.4 inches tall and weighs 2 pounds (907 grams). It's designed to be paired with a smaller TV in your bedroom, home office or dorm room, and not your main living room TV (unless you have a tiny living room). I hooked it up to an old 42-inch Vizio I have in my home office, and it's been a solid upgrade over my TV's built-in speakers. David Carnoy/CNET An upgrade over my TV speakers' sound I have Spectrum TV, and Roku has a Spectrum TV app that allows you to turn any Roku streamer into a cable TV box. For my listening test, I spent some time watching a few action movies, including Ant-Man and Nope, along with NFL Redzone, CNN and a bit of a Friends episode. I also used Roku's Apple TV app and Peacock to watch an English Premier League match. Maybe because my expectations were low, I was surprised by the amount of sound this little speaker was able to produce. While the Streambar SE doesn't offer the greatest sound -- it can output only so much bass through its dual 1.9-inch full-range drivers and single bass port -- the speaker produces better audio than you'd think given its very compact size. It's particularly strong in the midrange, producing loud, clear dialogue, and it delivers better sound than what you get from most TV speakers (by that I mean the speakers built into your TV). If you want more bass, you can link the speaker with Roku's Wireless Bass subwoofer, but that separate sub will set you back $130. I can't say that the Streambar SE has the widest soundstage or that you get a whole lot of stereo separation. It doesn't have the side-firing speakers of the step-up Streambar ($130), which earned a CNET Editors' Choice award in 2023, nor can you pair it with Roku's wireless rear speakers to create a surround system. But the quality is good enough to leave you feeling like you got a good deal, particularly if you were already going to shell out $30 or so for Roku's Express 4K Plus or Streaming Stick 4K. David Carnoy/CNET As far as sound modes go, you get a few presets to choose from, including Dialogue, Movie, Music, Night and Standard, and the speaker will cut the volume down on loud commercials. The soundbar is also equipped with Bluetooth, so you can connect headphones to it, plus Spotify Connect and Apple AirPlay support. My old Vizio isn't even a 4K TV, so the Streambar SE's video streaming capabilities are more than enough. Why Roku's Streambar SE makes a great gift While Roku's step-up Streambar ($130) certainly delivers better sound quality, the Streambar SE's more compact size and affordable price give it a distinct appeal, particularly for those of us looking to upgrade the sound of a more modest-size TV, perhaps an older model like mine. How to watch the Wholesome Direct showcase on June 7 at 12PM ET
Wholesome Direct, an annual showcase of cute and cozy games, is coming back on Saturday, June 7 at 12PM ET. This is a live event that can be streamed via the official YouTube page or Twitch account . The organizers promise to show off "a vibrant lineup of artistic, uplifting, and emotionally resonant games from developers of all sizes from around the world." The YouTube stream link is already available, so feel free to bookmark this page and come back on June 7 just in time for the show. Last year's stream was a whole lot of fun. One of the cool things about Wholesome Direct is that the organizers typically make several games available for download immediately after the event, though we don't know which ones will get that sort of VIP treatment this year. We only know a few of the games that will be covered during the event. There's an adorable puzzle game called Is This Seat Taken? that tasks players with positioning cute little characters on a bus, in a waiting room or at a restaurant. This one's actually being released by the event's publishing arm, Wholesome Games Presents. Another title is called MakeRoom and reminds me of the indie hit Unpacking , but with a focus on designing the perfect room and sharing that creation with friends. The mobile game Usagi Shima is coming to Steam and is getting a prime spot at Wholesome Direct. This title has players transforming a barren island to make it hospitable to lovable bunnies. Minami Lane is already out for Switch , but is also coming to Steam and will be featured during the livestream. It's a town management sim that focuses on one street at a time. It's also extremely easy on the eyes. Last year's stream discussed over 30 titles. That leaves plenty of room for cozy surprises. Also, the showcase falls right in the middle of Summer Game Fest , which hosts a group of loosely-affiliated events that begin on June 6.
