With the highly anticipated Tshwane Tourism Awards set to take place on 16 August 2025 at Batter Boys Village, excitement is building across the capital. This prestigious event will honour excellence in local tourism, shining a spotlight on the people and places that make Tshwane a world-class destination.
But behind every award handed out on the night is a process that is as rigorous as it is fair. The Tshwane Tourism Awards are not a popularity contest. They are rooted in credibility and guided by a structured, evidence-based approach.
Each participating business was asked to complete a detailed self-assessment aligned to four core categories: Community Contribution & Sustainability; Internal Environment & Team Culture; Industry Collaboration & Engagement; and Business Growth & Improvement.
Finalists were then invited to submit supporting documentation, including policies and performance records, project photos and testimonials to provide tangible evidence of their achievements. This is the material currently under review by an independent panel of judges, all highly respected professionals in tourism, academia and industry operations.
Our finalists include some of the absolute best in our city (and even the country!) so judging is done independently, professionally and confidentially.
We are proud to introduce the four judges who have been selected and were so kind to offer their time, expertise and discernment to this year's awards:
Dr Swart is a certified meeting professional with a degree in leadership performance and change. She chairs the Executive Development Programme for Women in Tourism and has co-authored five books and over 70 peer-reviewed publications. A sought-after speaker and leader in hospitality education, she was named one of the 100 Most Powerful People in African Hospitality and a Top 5 Woman in Leadership in Africa. In 2024, she received AAXO's award for Outstanding Contribution to the Industry.
Sibulele brings over two decades of experience in tourism and destination marketing. Formerly with KZN Tourism Authority and now a senior leader within the City of Tshwane, he has championed destination branding, partnership engagement, and the inclusion of youth and SMMEs in the tourism space. His passion lies in building platforms that empower emerging tourism talent and grow the domestic travel economy.
Dr Sifolo is a leading researcher and academic, holding a Doctorate in Business Administration with a focus on tourism supply chains and stakeholder engagement. She is an NRF Y2-rated researcher, a judge for national entrepreneurship awards, and an expert advisor on regional innovation initiatives. Her work advocates for inclusive tourism models, value chain integration and sustainable development across Africa.
With over 20 years in senior tourism roles, Sean is a seasoned strategist with experience in hospitality standards, destination management, and operations. Currently with TGCSA, he helps maintain and promote service excellence in graded establishments across South Africa. He has worked with leading brands like Legacy Hotels and Tourvest, and is well respected for his mentorship and commitment to quality and growth in the industry.
These four judges bring a balance of academic rigour, practical insight, and industry leadership to the process, ensuring that every finalist is assessed fairly and every winner has earned their moment in the spotlight.
As Tshwane prepares to celebrate its tourism champions, we extend our sincere thanks to this panel for their professional contribution, and to all our finalists for their courage, effort and excellence.
We look forward to welcoming you on 16 August — it's time to shine.

G20 South Africa 2025: a defining moment for the nation and the continent

Image: Supplied South Africa is preparing to welcome the world in 2025 as it assumes the presidency and hosts the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, a moment of national pride and continental significance. This milestone places South Africa, and by extension Africa, at the centre of global dialogue on economic growth, sustainable development, climate resilience, digital transformation, and multilateral cooperation. In the words of South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile, South Africa's goal is to promote mutually beneficial economic growth, create jobs and advance sustainable development for its partner nations. The Group of Twenty, commonly known as the G20, is the world's premier forum for economic cooperation. Representing more than 85% of global GDP, over 75% of world trade, and two-thirds of the planet's population, the G20 convenes the most powerful economies to address pressing global challenges. As the only African founding member of the G20, South Africa's presidency could not be more timely or symbolic. At a time when the world is redefining recovery and resilience in the wake of geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, and climate disasters, South Africa brings a grounded, inclusive voice to the table, one that reflects the aspirations of the Global South and the urgent developmental needs of the African continent. Image: Supplied The G20 countries' ability to respond collectively to mounting challenges facing the multilateral system will determine both the speed of global recovery and the future of sustainable development. Under the banner of 'inclusive growth for a just world,' South Africa's leadership is expected to spotlight issues such as financing for sustainable infrastructure, the global energy transition, youth employment, food security, digital inclusion, and equitable access to global markets. These are not only global concerns, but they are also everyday realities for millions across Africa. The Summit will attract heads of state, finance ministers, central bank governors, and global institutions like the UN, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund. Beyond political leadership, the G20 also engages civil society, youth, women, labour, business, and think tanks through structured engagement groups—offering platforms for a wider range of voices to shape global policy. Johannesburg, as host city, will become a strategic hub of diplomacy, business exchange, and cultural showcase. While the summit itself is a high-level, closed-door affair, South Africans can expect a wave of public engagement, community-driven programmes, investment conversations, and national pride as the event draws near. 'The G20 presidency is a powerful opportunity for South Africa to place Africa's priorities at the heart of global decision-making. We are committed to driving an inclusive agenda that ensures no country, and no person, is left behind.' said President Cyril Ramaphosa. Image: Supplied For the South African government, this is more than ceremonial. It is an opportunity for G20 members to transform commitments into lasting action. Key issues remain a challenge in the country and the continent, and there is a call for greater accountability to drive tangible progress in the global pursuit of gender equality SA's G20 presidency is also an opportunity to elevate African perspectives, strengthen international alliances, and advance sustainable development goals. It is a chance to reinforce South Africa's commitment to multilateralism and global cooperation at a time when unity is more important than ever. As preparations intensify in the coming months, all eyes will be on South Africa not just as a host, but as a bridge between developed and developing economies. The 2025 G20 Summit is more than just a gathering of nations. It is a moment for South Africa to lead with purpose, to shape global consensus, and to drive transformation that begins on the continent but resonates across the globe. Bye bye MultiChoice: R53 billion takeover by French media giant Canal+ approved

French media giant Canal+ has received regulatory approval from South Africa's Competition Tribunal to proceed with its multibillion-rand takeover of MultiChoice, paving the way for one of the most significant media mergers on the African continent. The deal, valued at around R53 billion, will see Canal+ acquire full control of MultiChoice, best known for its DStv and Showmax platforms. While the approval from the Competition Tribunal is a major milestone, the merger still needs clearance from other regulatory bodies, including Icasa, the JSE, the Takeover Regulation Panel, and the Financial Surveillance Department. 'It is a hugely positive step forward in our journey to bring together two iconic media and entertainment companies,' said Canal+ in a statement. As part of the approval, the Tribunal imposed conditions designed to protect South African interests: Ongoing investment in local sports and general entertainment content. Measures to support Historically Disadvantaged Persons (HDPs) and SMEs in the local broadcasting sector. Guarantees to maintain South Africa's influence over content and access decisions through the continued independence of MultiChoice (Pty) Ltd, which services local subscribers. 'We look forward to executing the remaining processes and to building something extraordinary – a global media and entertainment company with Africa at its heart,' said Calvo Mawela, CEO of MultiChoice Group. Despite the approval, Canal+ and MultiChoice must still navigate legal and policy hurdles, including South Africa's laws on foreign ownership of broadcasters. As part of the transaction structure, MultiChoice's South African business will be carved out and maintained independently to comply with these restrictions. Customers and viewers are not expected to be affected during the ongoing approval process, and both companies have committed to maintaining current services. Partners in crime? Inside Gayton and Kenny Kunene's lucrative businesses

Gayton McKenzie has defended Kenny Kunene as 'innocent' after the latter was found at the home of KT Katiso Molefe, the alleged mastermind behind the murder of Oupa John Sefoka, also known as DJ Sumbody. The friends and business partners have come a long way after meeting at a Bloemfontein prison more than two decades ago. In 1997, Kenny Kunene – a qualified teacher – was convicted of running a Ponzi scheme and spent six years at the Grootvlei prison in Bloemfontein. During this time, he befriended Gayton McKenzie, who was serving time for armed robbery. The duo began hustling from behind bars by smuggling cash and food. Gayton and Kenny reunited after their release and vowed to go into business together. They initially sold the former's motivational book, The Choice , to schools around the country. Gayton McKenzie and Kenny Kunene's rise from rags to riches has largely been due to their ability to start and sell successful businesses for a profit. The duo was mentored by businessmen Greg James and Gavin Varejes, and soon, they started their mining business, Central Rand Gold. Their mining business extended to other African countries. The duo co-founded ZAR Empire Holdings, which had dealings in entertainment, property, and mining. The company established the publishing group, X-Concepts, which is behind Gayton's multiple memoirs, including The Hustler's Bible. They founded the ZAR nightclub franchise, a hotspot for many celebrities in the early 2000s. The pals also founded Rivonia On Deck, another popular entertainment venue. For those who don't know: Kenny Kunene, a convicted criminal in his own right, is Gayton McKenzie's right-hand man and long time partner in 'business' and politics. — A Political Economist (@politicaleconZA) July 23, 2025 According to Kenny Kunene, Gayton and himself also sold fish and chicken from their car boots, marketed tickets to motivational talks to corporate companies, and also became security advisors to other businesses and the public. 'I went from sleeping on the floor to sleeping on the top floor of fancy hotels. I did it all!', Kenny said in his reality TV show, So What: Big Money, Big Dreams. In 2013, Gayton McKenzie and Kenny Kunene cofounded the Patriotic Alliance. The political party was multiracial but particularly focused on serving the interests of the country's coloured communities. At the time, Gayton had 'poached' Kenny from the Economic Freedom Front (EFF), which he was a member of. He told Mail & Guardian at the time: 'I don't want to become a member of Parliament, nor does Kenny… want to work with the people on the ground.'
