Indonesia issues Covid-19 warning over surge in cases in Asia
Several Southeast Asian countries have reported a surge in
Covid-19 cases, as regional health officials urged the public and medical institutions to take precautionary measures against the disease.

Indonesia 's health ministry warned in a circular that Covid-19 outbreaks were spreading in the region, including in
Thailand
Singapore and Hong Kong.
The dominant Covid-19 variants were XEC and JN.1 in Thailand, LF.7 and NB.1.8 in Singapore, JN.1 in Hong Kong, and XEC in Malaysia, said Murti Utami, the ministry's acting director of disease control.
'However, the infection transmission and the death rate are still relatively low,' she added.
The number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia fell from 28 to three over a week in May, according to a report by the Antara news agency.
The health ministry has urged medical institutions to implement timely measures to address the surge in Covid-19 cases across Asia, such as issuing public alerts and putting in place early detection processes. It also advised the public to use masks in crowded areas and seek medical advice for respiratory problems.
Thailand recorded 65,880 Covid-19 cases and three deaths in the last week of May, according to a Bangkok Post report citing Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, who said on Monday that the outbreak was easing from its yearly peak.

Indonesia should adopt EVs, draw lessons from failed methanol project in China, experts say
Indonesia should consider embracing electric vehicles (EVs) as an alternative to its plan to construct a costly methanol production facility, after a failed similar venture in China, according to energy finance specialists. Advertisement The ageing vehicle fleet in Southeast Asia's biggest economy may not be suitable for methanol fuel blends as the country's humid climate can cause fuel condensation, the Ohio-based Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis said in a report on Wednesday. While a methanol-blended fuel could reduce emissions and improve performance, these benefits were offset by lower energy content and higher material corrosion, it said, noting the risks flagged in a 2021 white paper by the International Council on Clean Transportation. EVs offered a more sustainable solution, the non-profit institute added. 'Expanding the use of EVs, particularly motorcycles, offers a lower-risk, less complex and cost-effective solution than blending methanol,' said Ghee Peh, the institute's Asia-based specialist, who wrote the report. Indonesia' strict Muslim province canes couple for sex outside marriage
A man and woman were publicly flogged 100 times each in Indonesia's conservative Aceh province on Wednesday after they were found guilty of sex outside marriage by a court operating under strict Islamic law. Sexual relations between an unmarried couple are outlawed in Aceh, which imposes a version of sharia, the Islamic legal code. Indonesia banned sex outside of marriage in its latest criminal code in 2022 but that law will not come into force until next year. The two were lashed in sets of 10 with a rattan stick as a small crowd watched on at a park in provincial capital Banda Aceh, and the female suspect was lashed by a woman, according to an AFP reporter at the scene. Three other suspects were caned a combined 49 times for alleged gambling and alcohol consumption.
