UIS Empowers Students For Digital Era, Aims To Become Malaysia's First Wakaf University
KAJANG, June 25 (Bernama) -- Universiti Islam Selangor (UIS) continues to drive digital transformation and Islamic values-based education through various digitalisation initiatives, in line with the current job market requirements.
Its vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Mohd Farid Ravi Abdullah said among the key efforts were the implementation of online digital learning, micro-credential programmes, and the upgrading of technology-based teaching and learning systems.
'Recently, we upgraded 11 laboratories with the latest computers and software, including building a dedicated studio and recording room for communication and media students to gain hands-on training akin to real-world industry experience,' he said in a press conference here today.
Mohd Farid said the university's approach, which integrates modern knowledge such as artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity with Islamic values, was aimed at producing well-rounded graduates capable of imparting knowledge, engaging in dakwah (Islamic propagation), and contributing meaningfully to society.
UIS currently offers over 79 academic programmes from foundation to doctorate levels across six main faculties, including the Faculty of Islamic Civilisation Studies, the Faculty of Economics, Accounting and Management, and the Faculty of Creative Multimedia and Computing.
According to Mohd Farid, UIS, formerly known as Kolej Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (KUIS), would officially be proclaimed a university by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, on July 19.
Established in 1995, KUIS was upgraded to a full-fledged university in October 2022.
Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, will be proclaimed as the Chancellor of the university, which is wholly owned by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS).
'His Royal Highness' consent is a great honour and elevates the image of UIS as one of the top choices for Selangor's youth to further their studies,' Mohd Farid said.

Another ministry recognised for its achievement is the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), where reforms were driven through the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), which successfully reduced the approval time for Electric Vehicle Charging Bay Plan Certifications from 28 days to just three. He added that JBPM also expedited the approval process for non-system-based technical plan certifications, reducing it from 30 days to just seven. 'This was achieved through streamlined procedures and the strengthening of the e-Premis system and development of a central data repository, resulting in annual regulatory cost savings of RM1.776 million,' he said. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) successfully reduced barriers to financing in the aerospace sector, generating RM17 million in regulatory savings for 50 small and medium enterprises by boosting production capacity by up to 30 percent. 'Gross profit margins increased by over 20 percent through automation and certification, further strengthening the supply chain and creating more high-skilled jobs. Reforms are being intensified and improvements accelerated,' he said.

Poor Communication Blamed For KDEBWM's Record Of Highest Unpaid Summonses
GENERAL SHAH ALAM, June 25 (Bernama) -- Poor communication in the delivery of summons notifications by subcontractors has been identified as one of the factors that caused KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) to record the highest number of unpaid summonses. KDEBWM, in a statement, said most of its fleet is operated by legally appointed subcontractors. Under the contracts, the subcontractors are responsible for any summonses issued to their respective vehicles or drivers. 'According to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) procedures, if a summons is not settled within three months, a notice will be sent to the registered owner, in this case KDEBWM, with an additional two months given for resolution. 'Upon receiving the official notification, KDEBWM promptly took action by conducting internal checks and gradually resolving the summonses. To date, 13,000 summonses have successfully been settled,' the statement read. KDEBWM stated that as a solid waste and cleansing management company, it operates more than 1,500 vehicles, including compactor trucks and Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) lorries across Selangor, working around the clock to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness and service. As a subsidiary of the Selangor government, KDEBWM explained that given its large scale of operations, statistics on unpaid summonses must be viewed holistically. 'For example, two summonses per truck per day could amount to nearly 3,000 summonses in a month, and more than 9,000 summonses in three months if hundreds of active vehicles are involved every day,' the statement said. KDEBWM in the same statement also expressed its appreciation for JPJ's role and responsibility in ensuring road safety. The company reiterated its full commitment to strengthening its internal monitoring systems, streamlining communication with subcontractors, and ensuring that all road safety regulations are consistently and ethically adhered to.
