Report: Boston Celtics hire Drew Nicholas as Executive Director of Player Personnel
Nicholas' path to the Celtics before those stops began as a player for the University of Maryland, where the Hempstead, New York native played at the NCAA level. After going unselected in the 2003 NBA draft, Nicholas played in Europe until 2012, with some stints played for higher-profile clubs like Panathinaikos and Emporio Armani Milano before becoming a scout for the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2016.
Stepping into the role played by former Celtics Director of Player Personnel Austin Ainge after his decampment to the Utah Jazz earlier this summer, the former Terrapin should be a solid option to help guide Boston in adding talent to their next contending roster.

Tyrese Maxey gives praise to James Harden for time with Sixers
James Harden's time with the Philadelphia 76ers was productive on the court. He led the league in assists in the 2022-23 season as he helped Joel Embiid win the MVP award while helping Tyrese Maxey take the next step forward in his career. Across 1.5 seasons with the Sixers, Harden averaged 21.0 points, 10.6 assists, and 6.4 rebounds. He was certainly up and down in the 7-game semifinal series loss to the Boston Celtics in 2023, but he did win Game 1 on the road while Embiid was out with an injury. The Beard was fantastic on the floor. Maxey hopped on "The Deep 3 Podcast" and gave his thoughts on Harden's time with the Sixers (h/t HoopsHype): The biggest thing I learned is—I know (James Harden), and I know people aren't going to say he sacrificed, but he sacrificed. He gave up some of himself for the team, for the betterment of the team. He was able to get Joel a lot of easy shots. He got me a lot of easy shots. But it was all about trust. From day one when he came in, the first thing he said to me was, 'Listen, don't think you're not going to get the ball. Don't think you're not about to still be aggressive and keep building your game.' His first instinct was always, whether we scored or didn't, he was going to pitch it ahead to me—let me score in transition, play that one-on-one game, shoot—whatever the case may be. Then I'd get it back, and it would just flow from there. Harden was very complimentary of Maxey after his Los Angeles Clippers beat the Sixers early in the 2024-25 season. It's obvious that the two of them are still friends and they have kept a good relationship even after Harden requested a trade in the 2023 offseason.

Former San Antonio Spurs big man Charles Bassey wants to play for the Boston Celtics. But is the interest mutual, or is the lack of a camp invite for the Sin City Celtics center standout more a product of the need for cap management on a Boston roster right up against the edge of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA)'s second apron? The Celtics could of course sign Bassey right now with their roster spot vacated by the move that got them under the second apron -- waiving 2025 NBA G League Most Valuable Player JD Davison. But doing so would theoretically put them right back over said second apron, negating the point of having made the move to part ways with Davison in the first place. Could another move to clear salary and open up some cap to bring on Bassey be in the works, or is Boston focused on other things at this point in the 2025 offseason? Are the WNBA's Connecticut Sun going to stay put instead of moving to Boston? It seems as if the league is not wild about the notion of relocating the franchise to Massachusetts based on statements recently circulated in a release put out in response to the news that former Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca has bought the Sun with intent to relocate the club to Boston. Now, according to recent reporting from MassLive's Kenneth Manoj, Sun president Jennifer Rizzotti related that the team has not, in fact, actually been sold to any party at present. "Contrary to some of the articles that were out yesterday, the team has not been sold," said Rizzotti on Sunday (Aug. 3). " ... unless it comes out of official Connecticut Sun or Mohegan Sun channels, it's not official." Rizzotti added that "any sale or relocation is subject to board approval, so ... non-disclosure agreement comes into play, so we're not allowed to actually talk about specific groups that we may have been talking to." "I can say that I have met personally with different investment groups over the last few months, and it's been a thorough process, and we're not quite at the finish line yet," said the Sun president, perhaps hinting that the alluded-to discussions might be more complex than we had been led to believe by earlier reports. For now, it seems that the league would prefer Boston get a franchise via expansion, suggesting that there could be an effort to sell the Sun, but keep them in their current market.
