Sebi introduces new guidelines for MF nomination process: What investors need to know

Sebi introduces new guidelines for MF nomination process: What investors need to know

Time of India2 days ago

To simplify and safeguard the nomination process in a mutual fund, markets regulator Sebi has come up with more operational guidelines. The move will lead to certain changes in the coming months.
WHAT IS NOMINATION IN A MUTUAL FUND? WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Nomination is the process of appointing a person to take care of your assets in the event of your death. Regulatory guidelines make it mandatory for new folios/accounts opened by an individual in a single name to make a nomination. In case investors do not wish to nominate, they need to confirm the same in the application form. Nomination makes transmission easy for the heirs in the event of the unitholder's death. However, in the absence of a nominee, the heirs/claimants will have to produce a host of documents like a will, legal heir certificate, no-objection certificate from other legal heirs etc., to get the units transferred in his/her name
WHAT ADDITIONAL THINGS DOES ONE HAVE TO MENTION IN THE NEW NOMINATION FORMS THAT WILL BE IN EFFECT FROM JUNE 1?

Starting June, a new format of the nomination form must be used. This new format is available on all mutual fund house websites, mutual fund registrar websites and that of Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI). As per the new rules, investors will have to provide the nominee's full name, relationship with investor, percentage of share, address, email ID, mobile number. In addition to the above they have to provide one of the following identity details, namely PAN, driving licence, last 4 digits of Aadhaar or passport number. If the details are incomplete there could be delays or rejections due to NIGO—not in good order—and the form could be rejected. Investors have to merely provide these details in the form and no proof of any documents is required while making these nominations. Investors can also opt out of the nomination by using the relevant form and there is no change in that form. In addition, an investor can also authorise one of the nominees to operate the account on his behalf, in case of incapacitation, and authorise the nominee to encash his assets up to a specified percentage from this account or folio.
DO EXISTING INVESTORS IN MUTUAL FUND SCHEMES HAVE TO DO ANYTHING NOW?
It is not mandatory for existing mutual fund investors, who have a nomination in their folios, to make any changes now
Live Events
HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN YOU NOMINATE?
You can add 3 nominees up to August 31, 2025. And from September 1, 2025 you can add up to 10 nominees in a folio.
HOW CAN YOU MAKE A NOMINATION IN YOUR MUTUAL FUND FOLIO?
Completion of the nomination is simple and can be done online through RTA (registrar and transfer agent) websites or fund house websites. For those not keen to do it online, one can use a relevant physical form, sign it and send it to the fund house. In case the mobile numbers or email IDs of the second holder are not updated with the fund house, the online process will not work and investors may have to do it by filling a form only.

SSC updates 'mySSC' app enabling mobile Aadhaar-based job applications

Government job aspirants can now apply for Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exams using a newly upgraded mobile app, SSC Chairman S. Gopalakrishnan announced on June 5. The revamped 'mySSC' app aims to make the application process easier, especially for candidates in rural areas. 'All candidates applying for recruitment exams conducted by SSC can fill the entire application form through the (mobile) application itself,' he said. He added that candidates no longer need to visit computer centres or depend on cyber cafes to complete and submit their forms. Previously, many applicants had to rely on local service centres or pay intermediaries to fill out online forms. 'The candidates can also identify themselves through Aadhaar OTP and face authentication on the same app,' he said. A major update in the app, which works on Android devices running version 11 or higher, is the integration of Aadhaar-based authentication. Users must first register using their Aadhaar number on the One-Time Registration (OTR) page. Before submitting their application, candidates must also install the Aadhaar Face RD app on their phones to complete the face verification process. The SSC has cautioned that information entered in the OTR will be treated as final and will override Aadhaar details in case of any mismatch. The app, developed by Cubastion Consulting, is expected to significantly ease the overall experience of dealing with the SSC—from application to final joining. "By combining biometric verification with Aadhaar-enabled services, we're making mass recruitment fairer, more secure, and more accessible—especially for rural candidates," said Cubastion co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Ravi Kumar. "With the new mySSC app, candidates can now complete the entire process—from registration to application—directly on their mobile phones. It removes private middlemen from the system and puts power back into the hands of the applicants. Our future vision is to make this app a one-stop solution for the entire recruitment lifecycle," he added. According to an SSC notice dated June 2, 2025, candidates were earlier able to register online through the SSC website and could only upload a live photo via the mobile app. With the app update, "...the entire application process can now be completed seamlessly within the app itself," it said. "This will be applicable for all the exams being conducted June 2025 onwards," the notice added.

How Indian Railways plans to curb fraud with Tatkal booking overhaul

In response to mounting complaints from passengers, the Ministry of Railways is overhauling the Tatkal ticket booking system to enhance speed, fairness, and transparency. Aadhaar verification will be mandatory for all Tatkal bookings starting later this month, aiming to reduce automated scalping and unauthorised access. Tatkal tickets—meant for last-minute travel and released a day before departure—are often bought within seconds by bots or agents, leaving genuine travellers stranded. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that Aadhaar-linked IRCTC accounts will get priority during the first 10 minutes of Tatkal sales. "Even authorised IRCTC agents will not be allowed to book tickets during this window," the Ministry said in a statement. Verified users get priority access Under the new system, Aadhaar-authenticated users will have a clear advantage. Unverified users will need to wait three days post-registration before being allowed to book Tatkal, Premium Tatkal, or Opening ARP tickets. Railway officials indicated that Aadhaar checks may also be extended to counter-based Tatkal bookings to create parity between online and offline platforms. Anti-bot tech and system upgrades To prevent misuse, the Railways has implemented anti-bot measures and partnered with a leading Content Delivery Network (CDN) to improve speed and resilience. Previously, bots accounted for nearly 50 per cent of login attempts during Tatkal hours. But system upgrades and AI-powered monitoring have led to a major drop. Over 25 million suspicious accounts have been deactivated. On May 22, 2025, a record 31,814 Tatkal tickets were booked in just one minute. Daily IRCTC logins rose 20 per cent in FY25 to 8.2 million, while daily bookings grew nearly 12 per cent. Over 86 per cent of reserved tickets are now booked online. Aadhaar at the centre of a secure system Earlier, Aadhaar authentication was handled by third-party systems. A recent Gazette notification now enables faster in-house verification. 'IRCTC will conduct special verification drives and shut down accounts deemed suspicious,' said an official. Even railway staff—including ticket checkers and train crews—are now covered under Aadhaar-based authentication for internal operations. Public outrage spurred reform The changes follow public uproar over IRCTC's booking glitches, sparked by a viral post from Thyrocare founder Dr A Velumani. 'Shocking. If it is true, it is betrayal!!' Velumani posted on X, attaching a screenshot of IRCTC freezing at 10 am during Tatkal bookings. He later suggested hourly load distribution to reduce server stress. His remarks triggered a wave of criticism online, prompting the Railways to fast-track reforms. Offline cancellations now simpler In Parliament, the Railway Minister also said that passengers holding physical tickets can now cancel them online via IRCTC or by calling 139. However, refunds will still be issued at reservation counters. Responding to BJP MP Medha Vishram Kulkarni, Vaishnaw clarified that 'waitlisted PRS counter tickets must be cancelled in person as per refund rules.' Faster platform, safer booking With 87 per cent of IRCTC's static content now served via CDN, system performance has improved. Passengers are encouraged to report online issues through the Cyber Crime Portal. If you've struggled to book Tatkal tickets before, help may be near—just ensure your Aadhaar is linked. In this new regime, identity equals access.
