Opposition parties, some DMK allies condemn overnight arrest of conservancy workers
In a post on X, AIADMK general secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami, addressing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, said: 'At the entrance of Ripon Building, in the dead of night, your administration unleashed oppression, attacking and crushing the sanitation workers who, even during COVID-19, tirelessly cleaned our garbage and kept the city spotless. They were forcibly removed and imprisoned in various places by your enforcement machinery.'
'Who are they? Anti-social elements? Thugs? Naxalites? Not at all. They are poor, simple people! Those who worked daily to keep Chennai city clean. Is it a crime that these sanitation workers protested peacefully, condemning your failure to fulfil the promises you made and acting contrary to them,' he asked.
'The sanitation workers have been imprisoned in more than eight locations. I urge that they be released immediately and that those injured due to these reckless actions be provided proper medical treatment,' Mr. Palaniswami said.
In a post on X, Mr. Selvaperunthagai, president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), said even though there is a Madras High Court direction that the conservancy workers can protest only at authorised places, the police should have handled the situation with compassion. He also sought Mr. Stalin's direct intervention in resolving the issue and ensuring the release of the detained workers and those who supported them.
Condemning the arrest, BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagendran said Chief Minister M.K. Stalin did not have the heart to meet the protesting workers, but had time to extend wishes to a film crew, and it is shameful. 'Is oppressing the poor people and taking away their democratic rights the social justice preached by DMK?' he asked.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary P. Shanmugam condemned the arrest, urged for their release and called for action against the police.
PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss also took a jibe at Mr. Stalin for watching a movie. 'Unleashing force on poor people is not courage, it is cowardice. Fulfilling their demands is courage. It is certain that the day people remove the DMK from power is not far away,' Dr. Anbumani said.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay also condemned the arrest. 'The sanitation workers have been protesting only to demand the fulfilment of the promises you made when you were in the Opposition. Why have you still not fulfilled those promises? If you cannot keep such promises, why do you make them in the first place,' he said.
He also sought the immediate release of the detained sanitation workers and said they must be given an alternative space to continue their protest and present their demands.
Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) leader G.K. Vasan, AMMK founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran, DMDK general secretary Premallatha Vijayakanth, Naam Tamilar Katchi leader S. Seeman, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) deputy general secretary Vanni Arasu, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) president Prof. M.H. Jawahirullah also condemned the arrest.
MDMK chief Vaiko urged the state government to quickly implement the welfare schemes announced for the workers, requesting the workers to accept them and return to work. Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK) general secretary and Tiruchengode MLA E.R. Eswaran also requested workers to return to work.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president and Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan expressed concern over the arrest of protesting conservancy workers. He welcomed the announcements by the Chief Minister, but said the party does not support privatisation.
Chief Minister should reconsider the privatisation decision and called for release of those arrested and should regularise their jobs, Mr. Thirumavalavan said.
Meanwhile, the Chennai Press Club condemned the police action, seizing a drone and other equipment from newspersons from Theekkathir newspaper's digital division when they were reporting the news of the protest and detention. In a post on X, the Club urged the police to immediately return the seized equipment and the video files.

'Save Gujarat University' protest amid corruption allegations, students seek audit
Members of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), former syndicate members, and former students, are staging protests amid allegations of large-scale corruption at Gujarat University. The protesters, carrying posters and beating drums, accused the administration of irregularities in projects like the Rifle Club, Tennis Court, Convention Center, and Food Court. They have launched a "Save Gujarat University" campaign.A heavy police presence was deployed on campus as demonstrators sat outside Vice Chancellor Neerja Gupta's office, raising slogans and demanding an audit. They have given the VC a 72-hour ultimatum to act, including filing FIRs against those syndicate member Indravijay Singh Gohil alleged that Gupta had broken a fixed deposit of Rs 150 crore out of the university's Rs 240 crore reserve for the first time in its history. He also claimed that the VC was appointing retired ONGC employees, allegedly linked to her husband, on salaries ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 further alleged that a syndicate member had demanded Rs 75 lakh from a university head of department, and that there was a recording of the incident. He accused the university of handing over facilities to private agencies without tenders, citing the convention center renovation cost of Rs 35 crore—more than its original construction cost of Rs 30 crore—as an also questioned why academy receipts for the tennis court were issued under a private name, with the university taking only 30 per cent of the Congress chief spokesperson, Manish Doshi, backed the protesters, saying corruption had increased after the implementation of the University Act. "Land is being given to private agencies without tender. FIRs must be filed and an independent audit conducted so that the truth comes out," he Chancellor Neerja Gupta rejected all allegations. She said the university had acted within four days on the Rs 75 lakh bribe matter by securing the resignation of the syndicate member involved. However, she noted that the FIR will have to be filed by those from whom the money was the fixed deposit claim, Gupta said it was false and that "proof will be given" showing the fixed deposit amount remains denied handing over the sports academy to a private agency, explaining that tenders were invited but no bidders came forward, so the university runs it with outside coaching support. "70 percent of tennis court earnings go to coaching and maintenance; the remaining 30 percent goes to the university," she clarified that the convention center had been converted into Dhanvantri Hospital during Covid-19 and was now being restored as a convention hall at a cost of Rs 35 lakh, not Rs 35 crore. She dismissed the Rifle Club allegations as "AI-generated misinformation" and denied any Rs 5 lakh membership standoff continues, with protesters insisting on swift action and the university administration standing by its denials.- EndsMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Gujarat

Stalin, DMK allies to boycott governor's Independence Day reception
Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin has decided to boycott governor RN Ravi's reception hosted on the occasion of Independence Day, after the latter's scathing attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Thursday, alleging that the state is facing four major challenges– educational and social discrimination of the poor and marginalised; alarming rise in suicides; drug abuse among the youth and a steep rise in rape and other sexual offences against women and girls. MK Stalin (File photo) DMK's allies also announced that they will boycott the event to protest against the governor, who they alleged, was acting against the interests of the state. This is a fresh standoff, adding to an already sour relationship between the governor and the Tamil Nadu government. Since Ravi became the governor in 2021, he has been at loggerheads with the government over a host of issues by supporting policies of the BJP-led Centre such as NEP, NEET, walking out of the assembly without reading his customary speech and omitting portions of the speech prepared by the state, changing the name of Tamil Nadu to Tamizhagam in a public invitation released by the Raj Bhavan. However, it was his move of delaying bills passed by the state legislature that led the state government to move court against him based on which the Supreme Court in a landmark verdict on April 8, set deadlines for the President and governors to clear bills passed by state legislatures. The apex court also found governor Ravi's action of keeping bills pending illegal. Meanwhile, President Draupadi Murmu on May 13 had put forth 14 questions before the Supreme Court on the constitutionality of its April 8 verdict. 'The public education ecosystem in Tamil Nadu is in steady decline,' Ravi said in his customary speech delivered on the eve of Independence Day. 'The learning gap between the socially and economically marginalised and others is sharply widening. In a knowledge-based competitive world and economy driven by AI and advanced new technologies, the future of our poor and marginalised is grossly compromised. They are merely passing out with certificates without job opportunities for them.' In response, higher education minister Govi Chezhiaan said that the governor's actions as chancellor is the reason for many state universities functioning without vice chancellors. 'In protest against the governor's actions and his continuance to act against the interests of the people of Tamil Nadu, the chief minister will boycott the governor's tea party at the Raj Bhavan on August 15,' the higher education minister said in a statement. He added that as minister he will boycott the convocations of the Alagappa University and Thiruvalluvar University to be held on August 18 and 19. The governor has forwarded the Bill to establish Kalaignar (named after DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi) University in Kumbakonam to the President, to delay its establishment, the minister said. Despite obtaining a historic verdict from the apex court, which also gave assent to the nine Bills that the governor had kept pending, a BJP functionary, Kutty alias Venkachalapathy, moved the Madras high court, which stayed the operationalisation of the nine laws, he added. The governor in his speech said that every other day there are reports of walls being built in villages and schools separating Dalits from others. 'It is a matter of collective shame that even after 78 years of Independence, humiliating social discrimination practices are prevalent in Tamil Nadu,' Ravi said. Quoting data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) he said that about 20,000 people commit suicide every year in Tamil Nadu which translates into over 65 suicides every day. 'It is indeed shocking. It is the highest in the country. The national average is 12 suicides for one lakh population. In Tamil Nadu, it is over 26 – more than double…,' the governor said. 'According to official data, over 2,000 people especially the youth of Tamil Nadu commit suicide due to drug abuse every year.' He also raised the issue of sexual crimes against women. 'According to official data, there has been over 56% increase in POCSO rape cases in 2024,' the governor said. 'Incidents of molestation of women have jumped by over 33%. Our sisters and daughters are afraid and feel insecure to come out of their houses.' The governor said as chancellor he sees that women outnumber men in receiving higher education degrees. 'However, if our sisters and daughters are scared to come out of their houses, to pursue their dreams and enterprises, it will cast a dark shadow over our future,' he said. Allies of the ruling DMK government, Congress, CPI (M), CPI, Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK) and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) have announced they will boycott the governor's reception.

NGT pulls up Corpn. over Manali waste incinerator
The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal has directed the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to file a detailed report on the future of Manali waste incinerator, and barred the plant from being recommissioned without mandatory environmental clearances. The bench, comprising Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member Satyagopal Korlapati, was hearing a case taken up suo motu based on news reports regarding the illegal functioning of the waste incinerator. During the earlier hearing, the Bench took serious note of allegations of municipal waste being openly burnt at the Manali site, despite the incinerator being non-functional. The GCC had then informed the Bench that it had awarded a contract for repair of the facility on June 3, 2025, with a two-month deadline for completion. The Bench had warned against unauthorised burning, and directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to issue notice and impose penalties on offenders. On August 11, the Bench said that the contractor's stipulated two-month period had expired without any report of completion. The GCC's counsel sought additional time to file a detailed status report. In the meantime, the civic body is reportedly diverting waste to the Kodungaiyur facility. The TNPCB submitted that it had issued directions under Section 33A of the Water Act and Section 31A of the Air Act, and had clearly instructed that the Manali unit must not be operated until upgraded air pollution control measures and a suitable heat or energy recovery systems are installed. The unit must also comply with TNPCB's earlier directions dated June 12, 2020, and obtain fresh Consent to Operate before recommissioning. The Bench has now directed the GCC to submit its future plan of action, and instructed the TNPCB to maintain strict vigilance to ensure that the unit does not resume operations in violation of law. The matter has been posted for further hearing on September 25.
