Eurostar Trains Delayed and Canceled After Cable Theft
The train operator said there were delays and last-minute cancellations on Wednesday after a 'cable theft' near the station in northern France, and advised passengers to cancel or postpone their trips. Eurostar was also forced to cancel routes on Tuesday, after two people died on its high-speed line between Lille and Paris.
The problems come during a time of heightened fears about sabotage in Europe, and they follow several other major disruptions to European rail services because of cable theft or vandalism.
In May, more than 10,000 passengers were stranded in Spain after cable was stolen.
Last July, arsonists in France cut and burned cables for high-speed rail lines before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, targeting important signal stations in three different areas. Experts say that the unusually dense French rail network is especially vulnerable to sabotage, in part because it is so expansive.
There was no immediate official indication as to the motivation behind the cable thefts.

President Trump's administration is pausing all issuance of worker visas for foreign truck drivers, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday, arguing the growing number of international, commercial operators is putting the lives of Americans in danger. 'Effective immediately we are pausing all issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers. The increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers,' Rubio said in a Thursday post on social platform X. Rubio's announcement comes days after Harjinder Singh, a truck driver, was accused of making an illegal U-turn that killed people around 50 miles north of West Palm Beach. The Department of Homeland Security said this week that Singh, who was arrested for three counts of vehicular homicide, was in the U.S. illegally. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy said on Tuesday that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration launched an investigation into the deadly Florida highway crash. Trump penned an executive order in late April requiring all commercial truck drivers operating in the U.S. to be proficient in English. The president designated English as the country's official language in an executive order in March. 'They should be able to read and understand traffic signs, communicate with traffic safety, border patrol, agricultural checkpoints, and cargo weight-limit station officers,' the White House said in the order at the time. 'Drivers need to provide feedback to their employers and customers and receive related directions in English.' Foreign truckers in the U.S. are usually working on H-2B visas. On Thursday, the State Department confirmed that it is vetting over 55 million U.S. visa holders for possible deportable infractions, including criminal activity, visa overstays and engagement in any form of terrorist activity.' The State Department said last week that it would pause all visas for visitors from the Gaza Strip as it conducts a 'full and thorough review of the process and procedures used to issue a small number of temporary medical-humanitarian visas in recent days.'

Detroit school district installs cameras on buses to catch drivers who illegally pass
In an effort to keep students safe at the bus stop, the Detroit Public Schools Community District has installed cameras on hundreds of school buses this year. According to Michigan law, vehicles are required to stop 20 feet away when a school bus has its stop sign and red flashing lights on. Unfortunately, some drivers still pass by, and DPSCD hopes to catch them in the act. "It happens every day on almost every route. It's a serious problem, especially in Detroit in urban areas," said DPSCD executive director of Transportation Aaron Walter. Walter says each bus will have multiple cameras installed to keep track of traffic illegally passing a stopped school bus. "Approximately four cameras on the inside plus six to eight on the outside, depending on the size of the bus. We got a 360 view all the way around the bus, and we're able to monitor the behaviors or incidents inside the bus," Walter said. This technology is possible at no cost to the district due to a partnership with BusPatrol, a company that prioritizes public safety. Each time a driver passes a stopped school bus in the district, they will receive a $295 citation. Forty percent of that revenue will go back to the district. The remaining revenue goes to BusPatrol. "This system will capture the license plate, video, and pictures of the car passing the school bus. The goal is to keep kids safe. One lost life is too many," said Walter. Last December, Michigan passed a law that allows cameras to be installed on school buses to capture drivers who fail to stop. The recorded video is then turned over to police to issue a citation. These new cameras, Walter says, are a game-changer to keep students safe during their commute to and from school. "This helps us identify stops that might be unsafe or where we're issuing a lot of citations. We can look at moving that stop somewhere safer and keeping the kids out of harm's way," Walter said.
