PIF to offer $13mn purse in ladies golf's revamped Global Series

Public Investment Fund (PIF) was named the title partner of a revamped five-tournament global series, which will be part of the Ladies European Tour (LET).
The PIF Global Series features five tournaments across three continents in 2025 and replaces the Aramco Team Series. Each event in the series will adopt a novel format for women's golf that features both team and individual competitions, and a prize purse of US$2 million for four of the tournaments.
PIF elevates women's golf
The fifth tournament is the PIF Saudi Ladies International, which was played earlier this year at Riyadh Golf Club. The total prize purse of US$5 million is among the highest in women's golf, apart from the major championships.
The PIF Saudi Ladies International is also significant because it became a pathbreaking tournament in women's golf by offering equal prize money (US$5 million) for both women's and men's tournaments (PIF Saudi International).
The partnership reinforces PIF's long-term commitment to women's sport, and Alanoud Althonayan, Head of Events and Sponsorships at PIF, commented: 'PIF continues to be a catalyst for the growth of women's sports, committed to delivering long-term transformative impact by inspiring and empowering female athletes at every level.
'The expansion of our Golf Saudi partnership with PIF as the title partner of Global Series underscores PIF's role in enabling and advancing women's golf, driving growth of the sport around the world.'
Apart from PIF Saudi Ladies International, the other events comprising the PIF Global Series are this week's Aramco Korea Championship; PIF Championship at Centurion Club, London (August 8-10); Aramco Houston Championship (September 5-7) and Aramco Shenzhen Championship at Mission Hills, Shenzhen, China (November 6-8).
Alexandra Armas, CEO of Ladies European Tour, added: 'These tournaments are well-supported by our members through their end-to-end event experiences and competitive environments. This partnership with PIF continues to raise the level of competition and commitment to the women's game, to ensure our players have the best possible opportunities to develop and succeed on the world stage.'
England's Charley Hull, the world No.14, said: 'The new PIF Global Series is another huge moment for the LET, as it continues to grow and offer more opportunities for players to play and win in amazing events around the world.
'Golf Saudi and PIF have proven to be real game changers for women's golf, once again backing up their commitment to creating equal opportunities and raising the bar for the players. I love playing either as an individual or in a team, so I can't wait to tee it up at series events throughout the year and hopefully inspire more and more young people into golf around the world.'
PIF is also behind LIV Golf League, the new Tour that features players like reigning US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, and multiple major winners Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm.

EU removes UAE from ‘high-risk' money-laundering list

The EU has removed the UAE from its high-risk money-laundering list. The European Commission has updated its list of high-risk jurisdictions presenting strategic deficiencies in their national anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) regimes. The UAE was among eight countries removed from the list, while a further 10, including Lebanon were added to the high-risk list. UAE EU money-laundering boost EU entities covered by the AML framework are required to apply enhanced vigilance in transactions involving these countries. This is important to protect the EU financial system. Jurisdictions which were delisted by the EU were: Barbados Gibraltar Jamaica Panama Philippines Senegal Uganda UAE Jurisdictions were added to the list were: Algeria Angola Côte d'Ivoire Kenya Laos Lebanon Monaco Namibia Nepal Venezuela The updated list takes into account the work of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and in particular its list of 'Jurisdictions under Increased Monitoring'. Alignment with FATF is important for upholding the EU´s commitment to promoting and implementing global standards. The Commission said it had 'carefully considered the concerns expressed regarding its previous proposal and conducted a thorough technical assessment, based on specific criteria and a well-defined methodology, incorporating information collected through the FATF, bilateral dialogues and on-site visits to the jurisdictions in question'. Australia beat Saudi Arabia to qualify for 2026 Fifa World Cup

Australia qualified for next year's World Cup in North America, while Oman denied Palestine from keeping alive their hopes of a first appearance at a global finals with a last-gasp draw in Jordan on Tuesday. Tony Popovic's Socceroos, who went into the third round's final matchday heavy favourites to progress, defeated direct rivals Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Jeddah to seal the second automatic qualification spot in Group C. Saudi Arabia must instead make do with a place in the fourth round, alongside Indonesia. Japan had already secured top place in the group. Herve Renard's Saudi side went into the decider at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium knowing only win by a five-goal margin would be enough to usurp Australia in second. The hosts were given the perfect start when Abdulrahman Al-Aboud opened the scoring 19 minutes in, however, the visitors pulled level just before half-time through Connor Metcalfe's left-footed strike. Australia were soon ahead, when three minutes into the second half Mitch Duke met Martin Boyle's cross to head home from close range. Goalkeeper Mathew Ryan then saved Salem Al-Dawsari's late penalty to earn Australia a memorable victory and secure the country's sixth successive appearance at a World Cup in style. In Group B, Palestinian hearts were broken when they conceded a penalty deep into injury-time to draw 1-1 with Oman in Amman. Palestine, playing their 'home' fixtures at a neutral venue, took the lead on 49 minutes at King Abdullah II Stadium when Oday Kharoub headed Adam Kaied's corner into the top corner. Oman were reduced to 10 men in the 73rd minute after Harib Al-Saadi was showed a second yellow card. Yet the visitors rallied to snatch a precious point in the 97th minute, Issam Al-Sabhi converting a spot-kick following Ahmad Taha's foul on Muhsen Al-Ghassani. The result means Oman finish fourth in the group at Palestine's expense and therefore advance to the next phase of qualification. The top two teams in each of the three groups go straight to the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, while those in third and fourth move on to the fourth round. Taking place in October, and comprising two groups of three, there are two places at next summer's tournament up for grabs, with Oman, UAE, Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia also in the running. Earlier on Tuesday, Crystal Palace forward Daichi Kamada scored twice for Japan and Paris Saint Germain's Lee Kang-in netted for South Korea as the Asian giants rounded off successful World Cup qualifying campaigns in style. Japan romped to a 6-0 thrashing of Patrick Kluivert's Indonesia in Osaka, while South Korea cruised to a 4-0 win over Kuwait in Seoul where fans were treated to a late appearance by their idol Son Heung-min. FA Cup winner Kamada struck twice in the first half for Japan, with Takefusa Kubo, Ryoya Morishita, Shuto Machino and substitute Mao Hosoya also on target against Indonesia, who finished fourth in Group C. Iran and Uzbekistan are already through to next year's finals from Group A, as are Jordan and South Korea from Group B, who both secured qualification last week with a game to spare. Jeon Jin-woo and goals from European-based trio Lee Kang-in, Oh Hyeon-gyu of Belgium's Genk and Lee Jae-sung of Germany's Mainz sealed the win. Tottenham's Son, who has been struggling with injury, came on as a 75th-minute substitute. Iraq confirmed third place in the group with a 1-0 victory against Jordan in Amman, the hosts having already clinched a first appearance at the World Cup.

How Dubai is using smart packaging, AI to measure food freshness, ensure safety

Dubai is using technology to ensure food safety, applying innovative ways to go the extra mile when it comes to identifying risks to public health and detecting violations through meticulous inspections. The time required to apply for permits dropped from 40 minutes to 10 minutes which helped rejection rates plummet 80 per cent. The third edition of the Dubai Food Safety Forum took place on Tuesday and brought together representatives from the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and other members of the public and private sector organisations, as well as academic institutions. According to Sultan Al Taher, Director of Food Safety Department at DM, the emirate of Dubai goes the extra mile to ensure food safety. 'We have 26,000 food establishments in Dubai and more than 350,000 food handlers,' he said. 'We are receiving about 8 million tons of food yearly through the emirate of Dubai. The food safety department oversees inspection of these facilities, and we carry out more and more inspections. We have around 60,000 food inspections every year.' The civic body uses technology to predict risks to food safety and prevent accidents. According to food safety officer Abdulazim Alsadani, some food products have smart packaging which gives real-time information about the product, like temperature and freshness. Additionally, they use artificial intelligence and other technology to foresee problems and risks. This helps them put in place preventive measures even before violations occur. Bobby Krishna from the food safety department reiterated that the aim of the DFE was for businesses to take ownership. 'We want to incrementally improve the culture,' he said. 'Food safety should not be the business of the leaders. It should be a joint effort by the entire team.' He added that the DFE was different from regular food inspections. 'Inspections look at violations specifically and check whether restaurants comply with the regulations,' he said. 'Meanwhile, DFE recognises and rewards those institutions which have a food safety culture.'
