Boeing Wins Order for 777X Aircraft: Should You Buy or Sell the Stock Now?

The Boeing Company BA recently secured a contract from China Airlines to deliver 10 777-9 passenger and four 777-8 Freighter airplanes. Additionally, the airline has options to purchase five 777-9s and four 777-8 Freighter jets.
With global customers having ordered more than 520 777X airplanes to date, Boeing's proven prowess in the commercial aerospace market is further strengthened, ensuring its long-term revenue stability. This, in turn, might encourage investors interested in aerospace stocks to add this American jet manufacturer to their portfolio.
However, before adding a stock to one's portfolio, one must consider other parameters like share price performance, opportunities as well as risks (if any) to investing in the same.
Shares of Boeing have surged 12% over the year-to-date period, outperforming the S&P 500's loss of 4.4%. The stock also beat the Zacks aerospace-defense industry's rise of 10.8% and the broader Zacks Aerospace sector's growth of 9.7% in the said time frame.

Shares of other aerospace bigwigs like Embraer ERJ and Airbus EADSY have also risen considerably over the year-to-date period. Notably, shares of Embraer and Airbus have gained 31% and 10.5%, respectively.
This aerospace manufacturer has been making headlines since the beginning of the year, driven by a series of contract wins across both commercial and defense sectors, as well as several valuable partnership agreements. Together, these developments (expected to strengthen the company's resilience during periods of economic or geopolitical uncertainty) must have reinstated investors' confidence in BA, which got duly reflected in its year-to-date share price hike.
Notably, Boeing began its 2025 media account with the announcement of a strategic partnership with Norsk e-Fuel in January, which enables it to invest in the production and availability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). In the next month, Boeing secured an order from the Japan Self-Defense Forces for the supply of 17 CH-47 Block II Chinook helicopters.
In March, Japan Airlines offered a contract to Boeing to deliver 17 of its 737-8 jets, and BOC Aviation issued an order for the supply of 50 737-8 jets. In April, Boeing signed an agreement to sell portions of its Digital Aviation Solutions business, including its Jeppesen, ForeFlight, AerData and OzRunways assets, to Thoma Bravo for cash worth $10.55 billion.
Rising air travel and an aging global fleet are driving demand for new jets and aftermarket services, which likely contributed to Boeing Global Services (BGS) unit generating a solid $5.1 billion in revenues in the first quarter of 2025. Future growth for Boeing in this market looks promising, with the company's upcoming aircraft offering 25-40% better fuel efficiency and lower emissions. With a strong $22.04 billion backlog, as of March 31, 2025, the BGS unit is well-positioned for sustained long-term expansion.
In fact, the rapidly growing commercial air travel also bodes well for other aerospace giants like Embraer and Airbus, both of which actively serve the commercial aftermarket services market through their Embraer Services & Support and Airbus Services units, respectively.
Boeing's long-term defense outlook also remains strong, supported by rising U.S. defense spending and major program involvement, such as the F-47 Next Generation Air Dominance platform. In the first quarter of 2025, its defense unit secured $4 billion in contracts, taking the backlog to $61.57 billion. Continued innovation, evident from its progress on the MQ-25 program, and strong government support signal strong growth potential for Boeing's defense offerings in the years ahead.
In line with this, the consensus estimate for BA's long-term (three-to-five years) earnings growth rate is pegged at 17.9%, higher than the industry's 11.5%. Now, let's take a sneak peek at the company's near-term estimates to understand whether the figures mirror similar growth prospects.
Boeing's estimate for second-quarter 2025 sales suggests an improvement of 18.4% from the year-ago quarter's reported figure, while that for full-year 2025 sales indicates a rally of 25.7%. A similar improvement trend can be observed from its 2026 sales estimates.
Its quarterly as well as yearly earnings estimates also reflect similar robust performance on a year-over-year basis.
Additionally, an upward revision has been observed in the company's near-term earnings estimates over the past 60 days. This indicates that investors are gaining confidence in the stock's earnings-generating capabilities.

While Boeing offers strong growth prospects, it also faces significant challenges that could affect its operational performance, which investors should carefully consider before investing in the stock. Although the commercial aerospace market has been benefiting from steady growth in air travel in recent times, persistent supply-chain issues, particularly those arising from a shortage of aircraft parts, continue to affect the global aviation industry. This, in turn, poses a significant risk for aircraft manufacturers, such as Boeing, Embraer and Airbus.
Looking ahead, persistent supply-chain issues are expected to continue to play the role of a primary growth inhibitor in the commercial aviation industry this year as well. Moreover, the recently imposed tariffs by the U.S. administration on imported goods might exacerbate the global supply-chain turmoil, resulting in delays in acquiring parts needed for Boeing's jet production. This might increase Boeing's production costs and strain its production timelines, creating uncertain challenges for the jet giant in maintaining its delivery schedules. This, in turn, might hurt its financial position.
The image below shows that BA stock's trailing 12-month return on invested capital (ROIC) not only lags the peer group's average return but also reflects a negative figure. This suggests that the company's investments are not yielding sufficient returns to cover its expenses.

However, the ROIC of its peers, Embraer and Airbus, is currently better than that of Boeing. While ERJ's ROIC is currently 14.24, that of EADSY is 4.71.
In terms of valuation, RTX's forward 12-month price-to-sales (P/S) is 1.69X, a premium to its peer group's average of 1.66X. This suggests that investors will be paying a higher price than the company's expected sales growth compared to that of its peer group. The stock's forward 12-month P/S also seems stretched when compared to its five-year median value, 1.40.

To conclude, investors interested in Boeing should wait for a better entry point, considering the stock's poor ROIC and premium valuation. BA currently has a VGM Score of F, which is also not a very favorable indicator of strong performance.

The DOT has agreed to settle a case challenging the constitutionality of its Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program, effectively barring women- and minority-owned companies from automatic inclusion in the initiative. In a joint motion filed May 28 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky that still needs a judge's approval, DOT agreed to no longer defend gender and race as presupposed qualifications for inclusion in the program. 'USDOT has determined that the race- and sex-based presumptions in its DBE program can no longer pass constitutional scrutiny,' the agency wrote in court documents. The move essentially abandons the fight taken on by former President Joe Biden's administration to defend the program's constitutionality after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling banned affirmative action in higher education admissions in 2023. Although the proposed settlement casts uncertainty around the future of the DBE program, which was started in 1983 under President Ronald Reagan, it isn't an absolute death knell. For instance, the DOT could change the criteria for inclusion in the DBE program to look at specific circumstances, much as the Small Business Administration did for its similar 8(a) Business Development Program after a separate challenge was successful against that initiative. 'What this means is that, if the consent order is entered, companies who qualified as DBEs due to race or gender alone will likely need to be recertified as disadvantaged based on a unique narrative of what they've actually experienced over the course of doing business,' said Christopher Slottee, an attorney at law firm Schwabe in Anchorage, Alaska, who specializes in federal contracting. 'They'll need to show they've actually been harmed due to their race or gender.' The settlement also still needs to be granted by the judge in the case. Beyond that, Democracy Forward, a liberal advocacy group that has been a vocal legal challenger to President Donald Trump's policies during both of his terms, recently won a minor victory in gaining approval to intervene in the case, which is still ongoing. 'The participation in this case is essential to allowing minority- and women-owned businesses to fight for themselves and their communities, and we are pleased that the court will allow their voices to be heard, said Sarah von der Lippe, counsel for the Minority Business Enterprise Legal Defense and Education Fund in a May 21 Democracy Forward news release praising that decision. Whatever the ultimate outcome of the case, the DBE's future administration will likely be dramatically curtailed and increasingly complex, according to Slottee. He said based on the settlement in its current form, state DOTs would need to re-certify all existing DBE contractors without using an assumption of disadvantage based on gender or race alone to award any contracts under the initiative. In effect, the 'DOT may not approve any federal, state or local DOT-funded projects with DBE contract goals where any DBE in that jurisdiction was determined to be eligible based on a race- or sex-based rebuttable presumption,' Slottee said in an email to Construction Dive. That means just a single participant certified under DBE's old rules could now effectively block the program from making new awards going forward. 'For example, if a single, individually owned company in the State of Alaska was certified as a DBE due to the rebuttable presumption, the DOT would be barred by the proposed consent order from approving any projects in Alaska that had DBE goals,' Slottee said. Shortly following the Supreme Court's 2023 ruling on affirmative action in higher education, the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty, a conservative advocacy group, filed suit against DOT on behalf of two White-owned businesses, Jeffersonville, Indiana-based Mid-America Milling Co. and Memphis, Indiana-based Bagshaw Trucking. It claimed that the DBE program, which aims to award 10% of federal contracts to disadvantaged businesses, was a legalized form of reverse discrimination, since women- and other non-majority-owned firms received automatic — or 'presumed' — certification to participate based on race or gender alone. 'All we want is a level playing field,' Kramer Koetter, president of Mid-America Milling, said in a news release. 'If my team can put forth the best product or service at a reasonable cost, then we should be rewarded for that. The DBE's removal returns common-sense back to contracting. Alaska Airlines is making its first foray into the European travel market, announcing Tuesday it will launch new flights to and from Rome, Italy, beginning in May 2026. The introduction of the new route marks the first time travelers will be able to fly nonstop from the airline's hub in Seattle, Washington, to Italy on any airline, according to Alaska Air. Customers will fly on Boeing 787-9 aircraft the carrier obtained when it merged with Hawaiian Airlines in 2023. The new route is part of Alaska Air's push to expand its global reach. The airline intends to serve 12 global destinations on multiple continents by 2030, CEO Ben Minicucci told CBS News last month. Alaska Air will operate four weekly flights to Rome traveling in each direction. Flights to Rome will leave Seattle at 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, arriving in the Italian capital at 1:45 p.m. local time the next day. Flights from Rome to Seattle will depart Italy at 3:45 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, arriving in Seattle at 6 p.m. Tickets will go on sale beginning in the fall. Several airlines and planemakers have written to senators opposing credit-card legislation. They say a proposed amendment could mean they stop offering rewards credit cards. And the subsequent lost revenue would mean "a contraction in airline activity and jobs." Airlines, labor unions, and manufacturers have written to senators warning that a bill about credit cards being proposed by senators could damage the aviation industry by weakening airline loyalty programs. United Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Airbus, and Boeing are among the signatories of Monday's letter. The campaign, led by the trade group Airlines for America, takes aim at legislation proposed by Senators Roger Marshall and Dick Durbin. Their amendment to the crypto-focused GENIUS Act hopes to expand competition for credit card providers and lower swipe fees. It's been supported by retailers, including the National Retail Federation, but has faced backlash from financial institutions. Credit cards also play a significant role for airlines. "Americans value and enjoy credit card rewards programs because they reward consumers for dollars that they would be spending no matter what," the letter says. "Many may be unpleasantly surprised if Congress disrupts those programs." It warns that the Durbin-Marshall amendment could see airlines stop offering rewards credit cards. Unions, including those representing pilots, flight attendants, and Boeing workers, have signed the letter, too. That's because it says the effect on loyalty programs would result in fewer flights and therefore "a contraction in airline activity and jobs." It adds that lost revenue means airlines would struggle to meet existing commitments to their workers, and "certainly complicate existing or future collective bargaining negotiations." The letter also says airlines would have less money to spend on buying new planes. Durbin has said that the legislation would save merchants and consumers an estimated $15 billion each year, while businesses pay more than $100 billion in swipe fees annually.
