How will midcap and smallcaps perform vis-a-vis largecaps going ahead? Mahesh Patil explains

Mahesh Patil of ABSL AMC suggests mid and small-cap companies may see renewed investment. Despite higher valuations, their long-term growth potential remains attractive. Rate cuts could boost urban consumption, particularly in mortgages and autos. Rural economy shows promise with better real wages and good monsoons. While auto sector outlook is weak, a post-festive season pick-up is possible.

, CIO,, says in the post-Covid period, mid and small-cap companies experienced higher earnings growth compared to large-caps, fueled by increased investment and sector re-evaluation. While earnings growth has converged and valuations have corrected, mid and small-caps still offer a better long-term growth outlook, potentially attracting renewed investment despite higher valuations and risk-reward.There are two parts to it. One is urban and the other is rural. Urban is more dependent on to some extent also on interest rates because a lot of urban consumers have got mortgages and with interest rates coming down that should support over there. So, yes, clearly urban consumption can see improvement if we see more rate cuts, whether it is the mortgage sector, whether it is the auto sector. But the rural economy is also very important and there are some tailwinds there on the consumption side.Inflation has been trending down, so the real wages are now looking much better over there. Monsoons have been good. This year the crop output is supposed to be fairly good. All these factors one would expect the rural incomes to be better this fiscal year and that could drive rural good growth. We are also seeing commentary from a few companies coming in that direction. So, given that the outlook for some of these sectors if you talk about whether it is the auto sector, currently the outlook is still weak, we are not seeing any kind of pick up but one can really hope that in the second half after the festive season there could be a pick up over there.Valuations in some of the sectors are not necessarily cheap, but they are reasonable. We have seen this in some stocks in the sector underperforming. So there is nothing really cheap but rather reasonable valuations. It is more about the delta change. If we see the trend changing, then we could see upgrades in the earning cycle and this sector can start to outperform. But I would be more constructive on some of the sectors related to the rural economy rather than urban consumption. In the post Covid period, the earnings growth of the midcap and smallcap companies was much higher than the largecap or the broader market and that was one of the factors.Obviously we had seen a lot of money coming into the sector and we saw a rerating of that sector also. So, it is a combination of higher earnings growth and PE multiple expansion which led to the kind of outsized returns in the small and midcap sector. In the last nine months, we have seen that earnings growth has kind of converged a bit for the midcaps, especially if you look at it compared to the largecaps, it is more or less in line, and valuations have also corrected to some extent. But they are still expensive, especially in the midcap space. Now, the question is whether the growth in this midcap and smallcap sectors, at least the outlook over there is better than the largecaps. Post the reset that we saw this year, at least on a bottom-up basis, we are seeing that in the midcap and smallcap universe, the earnings growth is slightly better than the largecap companies. If that is the case, then while the valuations are still higher, if they are able to exhibit better growth, then one can see people moving away from mid and smallcaps. That money will start to again come back into the sector and we have seen early trends of that happening. So, I would say that while the risk-reward is better in the largecap stocks because in a market correction, any kind of a risk-off globally will provide that downside, but in a three-year, five-year view, midcap and smallcap bottom-ups will possibly still in the Indian market see a better growth outlook on domestic side and end up outperforming.

Lucknow-Kanpur rapid rail clears final hurdle, promises sub-hour commute

Now that Lucknow Development Authority has approved the proposed rapid rail corridor between Lucknow and Kanpur, decks have been cleared for the project to move into the implementation phase. The corridor, dubbed 'NaMo Corridor', will enable high-speed trains to operate at 160 km per hour, bringing down the travel time between the two cities to just 40 to 50 minutes. National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) had proposed the rapid rail in 2015, but the progress was hampered by multiple delays, including disruptions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Authorities in Kanpur and Unnao had already granted necessary clearances to the project. With LDA issuing its no-objection certificate (NOC) on Wednesday, the project has crossed its final administrative hurdle. The project will mirror the ongoing Delhi-Meerut RRTS, which is already in advanced stages of development. High-speed trains, smart ticketing, automatic train doors, and advanced safety systems are expected to be the standard on the Lucknow-Kanpur line as well. Additionally, the development will follow a transit-oriented approach, ensuring that stations act as hubs for commercial and residential growth. 'LDA has approved the project under the condition that it aligns with Lucknow's master plan. The work is expected to be completed within five years,' said Prathamesh Kumar, vice-chairman, LDA. With the NOC now in place, NCRTC is expected to finalise the detailed project report (DPR), followed by tendering, land acquisition, and the beginning of the construction work. If completed on schedule, the Lucknow-Kanpur rapid rail would become Uttar Pradesh's first regional rapid transit system. All-weather op, impetus to infra The proposed route will start from the Amausi airport in Lucknow and pass through Bani, Unnao, Jaitipur, Ajgain, and Magarwara before reaching Ganga Barrage in Kanpur. Plans include its integration with the metro systems in both Lucknow and Kanpur. Designed to operate in foggy, rainy, and adverse weather conditions, the rapid rail will be equipped with state-of-the-art systems. Officials say that the service will not be affected by seasonal disruptions, a key factor in a region known for winter fog and erratic monsoons. Apart from improving intercity travel, the corridor is expected to provide a major boost to regional infrastructure, particularly in Unnao, where warehousing zones and industrial hubs are being planned along the route. The alignment also supports planned residential zones closer to Kanpur's outskirts, opening new opportunities for housing and real estate development.

K-Homes remains a non-starter despite being in demand

Avinash Nair, a private company employee in Ahmedabad, has been anxiously waiting for the roll-out of the K-Homes project announced in the last Budget by the State government. A native of Malayalapuzha, he has an unoccupied property near the Malayalapuzha Devi temple in Pathanamthitta, a district home to many famed temples. K-Homes envisages renting out unoccupied houses in tourist destinations in Kerala to tourists as holiday homes. The project seeks to develop basic tourism infrastructure by maximising the utility of unoccupied homes. In the initial phase, it was planned to be implemented within 10 km of tourism destinations such as Fort Kochi, Kumarakom, Kovalam, and Munnar. 11.89 lakh vacant houses However, around six months after the project was announced, not a single house has been rented out. Kerala has around 11.89 lakh vacant houses as per the 2011 Census data (an estimated 15 lakh-odd houses now). As per the initial proposal, the project offers revenue to the house owners and ensures the maintenance and safety of such houses. Pathanamthitta has the highest concentration of premium unoccupied houses and villas in the State. 'My property has been lying vacant for the past few years, especially after the COVID-19 outbreak, as my parents shifted to the my sister's house in Kochi. I was not interested in renting out the property, considering the risks involved. Hence I decided to make the property available for holidaymakers,' said Mr. Nair. Kerala Tourism sources told The Hindu said a meeting was convened by the department recently as part of drafting the project guidelines. Soon, another round of meeting will be convened inviting suggestions from stakeholders. The Budget had earmarked ₹5 crore for the initial project expenses. Dearth of quality rooms Though Kerala has the highest number of star hotels in the country, it has a dearth of quality rooms to meet the needs of budget and luxury class tourists. The prime requirement for attracting foreign tourists is the availability of quality hotel rooms. Although the project had irked a section of the hospitality sector, especially homestay owners, who were against providing budgetary support to unoccupied houses since most such dwellings are owned by wealthy non-resident Indians, the tourism sector as a whole was in favour of the project, considering the high number of unoccupied houses in the State.

UK watchdog pushes Amazon to rein in misleading product ratings: Know what happened

Amazon has pledged to step up its efforts in tackling fake reviews after reaching an agreement with the UK's competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). The commitment follows a CMA investigation launched in 2021 to scrutinise whether major online platforms like Amazon and Google were adequately protecting consumers from misleading online ratings. The probe was prompted by the sharp rise in online shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed widespread manipulation of product reviews. You may be interested in Under the agreement, Amazon has vowed to enhance its systems aimed at detecting and removing fake reviews. This includes clamping down on a practice known as "catalogue abuse", where sellers artificially boost the reputation of a product by linking it to positive reviews meant for entirely different items. The CMA highlighted a common example of this tactic: shoppers may see a pair of headphones with an impressive five-star rating, only to discover that the reviews actually refer to a mobile phone charger. Amazon will now take stronger action against those engaging in such deceptive practices, including banning businesses from selling on its platform and prohibiting users who repeatedly post fake reviews. Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the CMA, emphasised the significance of trustworthy reviews. 'Millions of people shop on Amazon, and star ratings and reviews play a crucial role in what they choose to buy. These undertakings mean shoppers can be more confident that what they see is genuine and that those trying to mislead them will face serious consequences,' she said. This move builds on a similar undertaking secured from Google earlier this year, as part of the CMA's wider effort to ensure online platforms take greater responsibility for protecting consumers. In a statement, Amazon reaffirmed its 'zero tolerance' stance on fake reviews and said the new measures complement its current initiatives. 'We invest substantial resources in preventing fake reviews from appearing in our store, including expert investigators and machine learning tools that analyse thousands of data points to detect suspicious activity,' the company stated. The new commitments apply specifically to Amazon's UK website and are intended to align the company more closely with British consumer protection laws.
