Spain's HBX shares plunge after full-year guidance revision

CNA6 days ago
Shares in Spanish travel technology firm HBX Group plunged as much as 25.6 per cent on Wednesday, on track for their biggest-ever daily decline, after the group revised its full-year guidance as a result of the macroeconomic backdrop and a weaker U.S. dollar.
In a trading update, the company downgraded its expected 2025 revenue to between 720 million euros ($830 million) and 740 million, from a previous guidance of between 740 million euros and 790 million.
It also revised down its total transaction value, now expected to grow by 6 per cent-9 per cent instead of the 6 per cent-10 per cent projected at its initial public share offering in February.
HBX, which buys hotel lodgings, car rentals and other products and resells them in bulk to travel agencies and retailers, said the conflict in the Middle East resulted in double-digit declines in bookings for destinations such as Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
It also highlighted a 3 per cent drop in revenue in the U.S. as a result of the weaker currency and lower demand in the country.
Chief Executive Nicolas Huss said on a call with analysts the company was already seeing a strong double-digit increase in bookings for 2026, adding that recovery in the travel sector does not usually take more than one season.
After a lacklustre start on the Spanish stock exchange, shares in the company have failed to pick up and are now around 20 per cent lower than on their February debut.
The group also said in its trading update that revenue in the April-June period, the third quarter of its financial year, was up 3 per cent year-on-year.

Cadillac will add value as 11th F1 team, says McLaren's Brown

LONDON :Cadillac's arrival in Formula One next year as an 11th team will bring added financial value with new partners and more fan engagement rather than diluting resources, according to McLaren's American chief executive Zak Brown. The General Motors-backed team have taken staff already from rival outfits, their European headquarters at Silverstone being close to other factories, and are also competing for sponsorship. Brown, whose team are dominating this year's championship after winning the 2024 constructors' title, saw no reason to fear a dilution of resources, however. "I think on employees they are definitely going to take a lot more than they give, which is fine," he said at last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. "My general view is if someone wants to go work for a rival team then shame on me. "For sponsors, I think they'll bring more new to the table than take." Brown expected Cadillac also to bring more competition eventually, although they faced a tough challenge as newcomers, and more fans to a series that now has three U.S. rounds and a growing audience in America. "Will we get a better U.S. TV deal, more American presence? I think their sponsors and Cadillac will spend money in the sport, the teams get a percentage of that so I see them as a value add to the sport," he added. "I'm not worried about maybe some of the short term-ness of they are going to take an employee here or there or poach a sponsor here or there. I think the contribution will be bigger than that." Cadillac secured approval of their bid in March, after a 764-day entry process and initial opposition from Formula One and the other 10 teams wary of a potential reduction in the share of revenues. The team are also backed by TWG Global, whose CEO Mark Walter has an estimated net worth of $12.5 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The first new team since U.S.-owned Haas debuted in 2016 said in July they were already two thirds of the way towards a targeted headcount of 600 by next season and no longer even the smallest outfit.

Heavy congestion expected at Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints over National Day weekend

Wikipedia screengrab SINGAPORE: Travellers heading across the Causeway during the upcoming National Day long weekend (Aug 8 to 10) should brace for heavy traffic at the land checkpoints, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) warned on Tuesday (5 Aug). In a statement, ICA said it anticipates a significant surge in traveller volume at both Woodlands and Tuas Checkpoints during the holiday period and is advising the public to plan their journeys in advance, avoid peak periods where possible, and factor in additional travel time. The alert follows a particularly busy June travel period, which saw record numbers crossing the land borders. Between the June school holiday period from May 29 and Jul 1, more than 525,000 travellers passed through the two checkpoints daily on average. This marks a nearly 10% increase from the same time last year. The highest single-day traveller volume was recorded on Jun 20, with 578,000 crossings, a new record that surpassed the previous high of 562,000 set on Dec 20 last year. ICA noted that during peak travel hours in June, traffic tailbacks from Malaysia caused outbound travellers to face waiting times of up to three hours. Given the expected spike in traffic over the National Day weekend, the agency is urging members of the public to monitor traffic conditions closely and use real-time updates to plan their journeys. For those who are unable to avoid peak periods, ICA recommends considering cross-border bus services as an alternative to driving or taking private transport. To streamline the immigration clearance process, travellers driving, riding motorcycles, or boarding buses are encouraged to use the QR code feature on the MyICA mobile app. The QR code can be used in place of a passport for customs clearance at the land checkpoints. Travellers can find up-to-date traffic information on the Land Transport Authority's One Motoring website and ICA's social media channels. Abu Dhabi's MGX could raise up to $25 billion for AI fund, Bloomberg News says

Abu Dhabi-based MGX is considering plans to raise as much as $25 billion in third-party capital as the investment group looks to ramp up its artificial intelligence holdings, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. MGX declined to comment on the report and Reuters could not immediately verify it. Company executives are weighing raising money from financial and strategic investors in Abu Dhabi and beyond, but Mubadala Investment Co and AI firm G42 will remain MGX's main backers, the report said. No final decisions have been made, according to the report. MGX, which has invested in OpenAI and Elon Musk's xAI, is chaired by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE's national security adviser and a brother of UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed. The Financial Times reported last week that French AI startup Mistral is in talks with MGX and other investors to raise $1 billion at a valuation of $10 billion.
