Oxford Street's massive new IKEA is officially opening THIS WEEK
Huge news for anyone who has had the misfortune of having to schlep back from IKEA Wembley on public transport with a Kallax shelving unit, a Tjusig shoe rack, two houseplants, and a giant blue Frakta bag full of 'kitchen bits'; Sweden's blue-and-yellow flatpack mecca is finally opening its Oxford Street store this week.
Taking over the former Topshop flagship at 214 Oxford Street, the city centre outpost will offer the 'traditional IKEA experience' that we Brits all know and love, with three floors of showrooms, a market space stocking more than 3,500 items of bargain homeware and, of course, a 130-seater Swedish deli where you can unwind after your inevitable wardrobe-induced argument over meatballs with lingonberry jam and those iconic 75p hot dogs.
When is Oxford Street IKEA opening?
IKEA announced this morning that the Oxford Street store will open tomorrow, Thursday May 1 2025. This follows the closure of the 'Hus of Frakta' pop-up, which celebrated the brand's famous blue carrier bags and was installed on the building's ground floor since last November.

Why has the new store been so delayed?
First hinted at all the way back in 2015, IKEA Oxford Street was originally slated to open in autumn 2023, before being further delayed to autumn 2024 and finally to its new opening date. But the near-decade-long wait has been for good reason.
The store's long-awaited opening follows a painstaking three-year renovation of the historic building, which the brand purchased in early 2022 for an estimated £378 million. A serious undertaking involving not just the 5,800-square-metre IKEA store, but four floors of office space and three additional retail outlets, the restoration project aimed to enhance the building's environmental performance while preserving its Grade II-listed heritage features.
Alongside replacing gas-fired boilers with eco-friendly air-source heat pumps and installing secondary glazing for better insulation, the project has included meticulous restorations of the building's historic façade. Most notably, this has involved the restoration of its original Victorian roof lantern, which is now protected with a contemporary covering to improve the building's energy efficiency and ensure this stunning original feature is preserved for years to come, while the building's heritage lift lobbies have also been fitted with modern mechanisms to meet current safety standards.

Travel experts have urged Brits to check out two specific bank cards that might save you a small fortune thanks to their £0 withdrawal fees UK holidaymakers have been warned over steep ATM fees in Europe which can wreak havoc on your finances. Gone are the days when Brits would head over to their local travel agent to buy a whole week's worth of Euros for their holiday. Nowadays, most go away with their bank card - and a pocket full of loose change. However, many high-street banks still charge customers for using their debit cards abroad on non-sterling transaction fees. This can either be as a one-off charge per transaction, or a percentage of the amount you're withdrawing. While a £2 fee, for example, might not sound like a lot - it can soon add up, especially if you're only comfortably withdrawing small amounts of cash each time. Travel experts over at Ionian Island Holidays have therefore urged Brits to dodge the cost with two specific bank cards. The pros spoke with Laura Bennet, a 34-year-old from Bristol who spent two weeks travelling across the Greek hotspot of Crete and the Cyclades islands. "I used to accept those small £2–£3 ATM fees as normal, but when they started happening regularly, I realised how much I was losing," she said, in a statement sent to the Mirror. "This year, I came prepared with the right cards and some basic know-how. I kept my Starling card for cash withdrawals and used Monzo for purchases — both worked really well and showed transactions instantly in the app." Ionian Island Holidays branded cards like Starling and Monzo as 'game-changers' for travellers, adding: "They're widely accepted in Greece and don't penalise you for accessing your money. [It's] something many visitors still don't realise." While Monzo and Starling both offer free withdrawals on overseas ATMs, both still come with restrictions. For example, Starling only allows customers to withdraw a maximum of £300 a day, with a cap of six withdrawals per day. If Monzo is your main account, you can make unlimited fee-free cash withdrawals within the European Economic Area (EEA). Outside of the EEA, customers will be limited to withdrawing £200 every 30 days. After these limits, a three per cent fee applies. Even if your bank card isn't charging you for overseas activity, many ATMs in popular tourist areas will charge for withdrawals. Laura sought out machines operated by local banks such as Alpha Bank, Piraeus Bank, and Eurobank in Greece, which she says have clearer fee structures and better security. "I avoided the flashy machines near tourist shops and instead used ATMs located at actual bank branches," she added. "They felt more trustworthy and usually displayed fees upfront." Remember, if you're using your card abroad - you should always withdraw in the local currency - and not in GBP. As previously reported, this applies even if an ATM is advertising '0 per cent commission'.

New Ikea click and collect lockers to be introduced at Tesco in Kilmarnock
Shoppers will be able to pick up a range of products from the lockers. New Ikea click and collect lockers are set to be introduced at a Tesco in Kilmarnock. The lockers will be based at the Tesco Extra West Shaw Street store where an existing clothes donation and recycling point is based. Shoppers will be able to order a range of products from the Scandinavian homeware and furniture firm, when the lockers are built in the car park. Ikea installed its first batch of UK lockers last year with the service now being rolled out across the country. Bosses had applied to East Ayrshire Council for permission to install the lockers and related illuminated signs, both of which were approved with conditions by planners. A report on the application reads: "The proposed lockers will measure 10.2 metres long, and 2.6 metres wide (3.37 metres inclusive of the roof overhang/canopy and signage. "The lockers will measure 2.24 metres high (3.12 metres high inclusive of the signage). They will be of aluminium construction and painted externally in a mixture of grey, yellow and blue. "The lockers will feature a user-interface touchscreen on the front elevation, and an integrated overhead canopy."
