Peep Show stars say sitcom genre has fallen into a ‘coma' in past decade

Independent14-02-2025
Peep Show stars David Mitchell and Robert Webb have hit out at the current state of British sketch shows, saying that the genre has fallen into a 'coma' in the past decade.
The pair, who starred in the award-winning series that ran between 2003 to 2015, will produce Channel 4 's first sketch show in more than a decade. They admitted they were 'startled, amused and available' when they were asked to lead the untitled six-part series, which will air later this year.
Mitchell, who played loan manager Mark Corrigan in Peep Show, said that he hoped that the forthcoming sketch show would rescue the genre from abandonment.
Sitcoms have been a casualty of the the TV industry's narrowing budget in recent years, and the Noughties are often seen as the golden years for popular sitcoms including The Catherine Tate Show and Little Britain.
Mitchell said that the genre has been neglected in recent years, but there is still hope to resuscitate it.
'It has been resting but there is still a beep on the machine so let's hope it is ready to get up and eat a hearty meal,' he said. 'It's slightly odd that it stopped. The short amusing item that hopefully doesn't outstay its welcome is quite a major part of TV comedy. It has continued on the internet in a low budget way but it has been abandoned by TV.'
He said the glaring generational divides that currently exist in society present an environment where comedy can flourish.
'People are more at odds with each other than at any time since the sixties,' he said, according to The Times.
'The different generations do not understand each other,' he continued. 'And we live in changing times with an internet that is ruining everything. But like with all things that are fundamentally horrible there is a lot of humour to be found which is good for a sketch show to discuss.'
Mitchell added that the success and growth of YouTube is proof that there is still demand for television of sorts.
He explained: 'It's harder than ever to get the money together to make high quality comedies and dramas. But people still want quality TV so there are reasons to be hopeful. We have got to keep making programmes that people want to see and even if they are watching them in two minute bursts online then it still counts.'
The pair's previous project together, That Mitchell and Webb Look, ended in 2010 after four series on BBC Two, and won a Bafta for best comedy programme. The show saw the pair take on various characters, including detectives to maths quiz experts.
For the forthcoming release, the pair have promised an 'innovative merging of comedy minds across generations', with support actors and writers including the Ghosts star Kiell Smith-Bynoe.
Channel 4 has not aired a sketch series since 2014's Cardinal Burns, which was co-created by Dustin Demri-Burns who has gone on to appear in Stath Lets Flats and Slow Horses.
Sharing the announcement, Charlie Perkins, the head of comedy for Channel 4, declared that the 'sketch is back'.
'Sketch shows have historically been the bedrock of generations of comedy writers and performers – giving so many household names their first credits,' she said.
'In an era of purpose-heavy, high-production values, international-feeling dramas and comedy a lot of the very silliest stuff has got lost – and the lifeblood of TV with it.'
The announcement is part of a Channel 4 commissioning spree that includes a new drama, titled Tip Toe, from the It's A Sin writer Russell T Davies.

Former TOWIE favourite to star in popular Channel 4 dating show following 'abusive' relationship history

The cousin of a popular former The Only Way Is Essex star has been announced as appearing on a popular Channel 4 dating show A star from The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE) is set to grace our screens on a popular Channel 4 dating show this month as a fresh season kicks off. ‌ First Dates, which returned for its 24th series in July, sets up singletons on blind dates at a restaurant. Since its debut in 2013, the programme has been a hit with viewers who enjoy watching contestants being paired based on their personalities and preferences, all in the hope of igniting a romantic spark. ‌ This month, former TOWIE star Leah Wright will be making an appearance. Leah first graced our screens in TOWIE back in 2011 and is related to Mark Wright and Elliott Wright. ‌ Leah will feature in episode nine of First Dates, which airs on August 28 at 10pm on Channel 4. A teaser reveals: "This time, a reality TV star seeks some old-school romance. Sparks fly as TOWIE's Leah Wright meets ex-bouncer Steve from Runcorn, but is distance a dealbreaker?", reports Essex Live. "While one dater hopes for luxury gifts, a free spirit wrestles with commitment. And a nervous first-timer meets a confident dater and the two of them get caught up in silence." However, aside from her reality TV appearances, Leah has been candid about her past "abusive" relationship. Having previously partnered with charity Refuge, she opened up about her journey, admitting she felt "so lonely." Posting footage from her interview on Instagram, the celebrity discussed her personal journey through domestic abuse openly. ‌ She revealed: "For many years I went through life not thinking about evidence, you know, not thinking about anything, not knowing laws, not knowing if I can get help from the government, not knowing that I would be okay. "And I think that is a message that I just want to give, that you are going to be okay. I've gone through court, and I was believed in the end. It was big fight, it was a long fight, an emotional fight, and it took a lot of strength." ‌ She continued: "'When you're manipulated that much that you are scared to leave, the first thing is you don't know where to go. Do I call a number? Am I going to get caught calling that number? "There is help out there. Please don't feel alone, we always have so many resources. Refuge are a brilliant place to start if you need to call, and talking to that person who's so understanding, really helped me." The TOWIE personality became part of the ITV reality programme in 2011 and capitalised on the Wright family's achievements. However, she departed after four years to explore different career paths.

BBC school drama Waterloo Road to continue for two more series

The BBC says the Manchester-set programme's return, which began in 2006 and ran until 2015 before it was brought back to screens in 2023, will allow it to continue with its investment in creative talent in the north of England. Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, said: 'I'm delighted that Waterloo Road will be opening its corridors once again, with two more series of the hit drama about to start filming. 'The show continues to entertain the audience who love to follow both the staff and pupils and, with a new series heading to BBC iPlayer and BBC One next month, they don't have long to wait.' The next series will see Jon Richardson make his debut as the school's new media studies teacher next month, and the show has already seen Lindsey Coulson replace comedian Jason Manford, who played Steven Savage, as new headteacher, Dame Stella Drake. During its time on TV, Waterloo Road has explored storylines such as the cost-of-living crisis, coercive control, neurodivergence, work-place politics, family drama, grief, and young love. The show has provided a launch pad for the careers of stars such as Lucien Laviscount, Rege-Jean Page and Chelsee Healey, as well as Phoebe Dynevor, whose sister Hattie Dynevor joined the series in 2024, and Adam Thomas, who returned when the series was rebooted in 2023 and remains on the show. Cameron Roach, Waterloo Road executive producer, said: 'When the BBC commissioned the reboot of Waterloo Road, we had hoped it might run for a few seasons. 'But to be commissioned for further series, bringing the total episodes since relaunch to 70 hours, is a huge achievement and a reflection of the incredible creative teams in front of and behind the camera. 'As well as continuing to celebrate emerging talent, the show is fast gaining a reputation for working with the best comedy talent, as Jon Richardson joins the cast this season. 'As a team we're incredibly proud that a very British show can be such an enduring success for the BBC and continue to bring in new generations of viewers.' Filming for the two new series will begin in Greater Manchester later this year, with the first of the pair to launch next year.
