Loke: LRT3 works 99pc done, on track for Sept 30 start
In a written parliamentary reply, Loke said the government is committed to ensuring the project is delivered safely and efficiently, with operations scheduled to begin on September 30.
He was responding to Permatang Pauh MP Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan, who had asked the ministry to explain the cause of delays and the increase in project costs.
Loke explained that the project faced delays primarily due to the Movement Control Order (MCO) from March 2020 to October 2021, which disrupted construction schedules and supply chains.
This was compounded by subsequent labour shortages and limited availability of key construction materials.
The project's original cost, approved in 2015, was RM31.65 billion. This was reduced to RM16.63 billion in 2018 following a cost-cutting restructuring exercise, saving the government RM15.02 billion.
'However, in 2024, the government decided to reinstate part of the project's original scope.
'This included five additional stations, seven extra three-car train sets, the expansion of the Johan Setia depot in Klang, the purchase of 150 electric feeder buses, and the construction of three bus depots,' he said.
The reinstatement added RM5.3 billion to the cost, bringing the total to RM21.93 billion.
LRT3 is expected to serve several high-density areas, including Bandar Utama, Shah Alam, and Klang, accommodating up to 18,630 commuters per hour in each direction.
The new line is projected to benefit some two million residents along its alignment, particularly those travelling between Petaling Jaya and Klang, with the aim of alleviating traffic congestion and boosting economic growth around its stations.

Durian becomes symbol of unity for three friends
BATU PAHAT: Just like durian flesh neatly packed within its thorny husk, the friendship of three men from different races has remained strong, with the "king of fruits" not only serving as their livelihood but also as a symbol of unity. About a decade ago, Mohd Nasir Majnun, 43, Chew Pei Chuan, 42, and S. Lognathan, 35, worked together as car repossessors before each tried running their own durian stalls in separate locations. But as their stalls were quite close to one another, it became difficult to attract customers. "That situation led us to sit down and agree to set up a joint venture under the name 'Rumah Buah'. Alhamdulillah, it turned out to be a blessing as our stall has since become a favourite spot for customers of all races. Chew said their decision to join forces has since attracted customers from across Malaysia and abroad. "Before this, only locals bought from me. Now, we have customers from Singapore, Thailand and even China. They want to taste Musang King and see for themselves how we work together. "Our story went viral during the Movement Control Order, when we sold durians online and personally delivered them to customers," he said, adding that they now sell up to three tonnes of durians daily, including Musang King, kampung, kahwin, IOI, Black Thorn and D13 varieties. Meanwhile, Lognathan said their cooperation continues beyond the durian season, as they also sell other local fruits such as pineapples and dragon fruit sourced from nearby farmers, as well as fresh coconut water. "We also carry out charitable activities, especially during festive seasons, by sharing part of our earnings with the underprivileged. "Every Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year and Deepavali, we make sure to contribute to those in need," said Lognathan, fondly known as Uda among his friends.

Loke: Jalur Gemilang a symbol of unity

Speaking during the 'Kibarkan Jalur Gemilang Komuniti Pelabuhan Klang' programme, Loke reminded Malaysians that the national flag transcends race, religion and politics. 'Although there have been several recent incidents involving the Jalur Gemilang, we must not forget that it is our common flag. 'National Day should unite Malaysians and remind us that love for the country must be part of our character and daily lives,' he said at the event held at the Port Klang Authority Social and Recreational Club yesterday. His remarks followed two incidents in which the national flag was displayed upside down – initially at a primary school in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan, and subsequently at a shop in Kepala Batas, Penang. On another matter, Loke stressed the importance of the logistics sector as the backbone of Malaysia's economy. 'Without logistics, trade cannot take place, and the economy would be crippled,' he said. Loke said it is the mission of the industry to ensure that Port Klang, already ranked among the world's 10 busiest ports, continues to grow and drive national prosperity. He added that development plans for Carey Island, designated as the country's third port, are underway and are expected to bring additional benefits to the Port Klang community. At the event, Loke also presented the Jalur Gemilang to representatives of logistics and transportation companies in conjunction with the upcoming National Day celebrations.
