CAIRO, June 4 (Xinhua) -- As Eid al-Adha, one of the most important festivals for Muslims, draws near, a palpable buzz fills the clothing stores and bustling markets across Egypt.
Soha Ahmed, navigating a busy street in Cairo's Nasr City district with her three children, said clothing prices were reasonable compared to previous years.
"There is a wide selection of clothing to suit most tastes," she told Xinhua, noting that "buying new clothes for Eid is a tradition in Egyptian life, as these clothes bring joy to children's hearts."
Despite the economic challenges in Egypt, an undercurrent of optimism runs through the streets. Shopkeepers notice an increase in the number of local residents seeking new garments to celebrate the upcoming festivities on June 6.
To cater to the diverse needs and budgets of a population navigating difficult living conditions this year, Egyptian clothing retailers are offering a wide range of options.
Numerous promotions and discounts have been rolled out, with some stores slashing prices by more than 30 percent. The Ready-Made Garments Division of the Cairo Chamber of Commerce confirmed this trend, noting that most stores have been offering discounts ranging from 10 to 30 percent since May 20.
"We began preparing our displays at the beginning of May, focusing on providing a diverse selection of clothing at prices that suit all classes," said Mahmoud Ragab, who owns a clothing store in Nasr City.
Ragab, who sells imported clothing from Türkiye and China alongside products from local manufacturers, said that demand is exceptionally strong this year, particularly from families eager to buy new outfits for their children for Eid.
"Eid is an important season for merchants, so most vendors offer great deals to attract customers, especially those with limited incomes," he affirmed.
Beyond traditional retail, the Egyptian government has stepped in with vital initiatives to ensure families have access to affordable Eid clothes and essential commodities.
The "We Are All One" initiative, launched by the Ministry of Interior on May 25 and running until the end of June across most Egyptian governorates, is an example.
This initiative aims to provide high-quality food and non-food items, including clothes, at discounts of up to 40 percent through approximately 2,633 outlets nationwide.
Hassan Abdullah, an employee at a private security company in Cairo, found solace in these government-run outlets.
"Prices are noticeably lower," he told Xinhua as he purchased new clothes for his two children, pointing out that he had seen similar items elsewhere at prices at least 20 percent higher.
For those looking for even more economical options, the booming market for imported used clothing provides an attractive alternative. Available in most markets, these stores offer quality garments at considerably lower prices.
Adel Assaad, a worker at a bakery, considers used clothing stores his go-to option due to their affordability and variety.
"It is the best option for my very limited income," Assaad said, adding "I rarely buy new clothes throughout the year. I buy clothes for entire family from used clothing stores, and not just for holidays."
"There is a strong demand for used clothing from a wide segment of the population, particularly those with limited budgets," said Faraj Hussein, manager of a used clothing store in Cairo.

75 years of China-Myanmar ties commemorated in Myanmar with emphasis on bilateral cooperation, support

YANGON (Xinhua): The 75th anniversary of China-Myanmar diplomatic ties was marked with events in Yangon and Mandalay on Thursday, with a focus on bilateral cooperation and China's ongoing support for Myanmar. In Yangon, a commemorative event was organized to mark the anniversary alongside the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations. Meanwhile, a forum welcoming the diplomatic milestone took place in Mandalay. Hundreds of representatives from government agencies, non-governmental organizations, businesses, think tanks, and academic institutions from both China and Myanmar attended the Yangon event, highlighting the longstanding "Paukphaw" (fraternal) friendship between the two countries. Myo Aung, chief minister of Mandalay region, said in his speech at the event in Mandalay that over the past 75 years, Myanmar and China have continuously deepened cooperation in various fields such as science and technology, culture, education, sports, and health. He added that Myanmar actively supports the joint implementation of major projects, including the Belt and Road Initiative, the Myanmar-China Economic Corridor and the China-Myanmar oil and gas pipeline. U Tin Oo, chairman of the Myanmar-China Friendship Association, said at the event in Yangon that China's Belt and Road Initiative has strengthened global cooperation and promoted common development. He noted that the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation mechanism has played a vital role in fostering peace, stability, and development in the region. Ma Jia, Chinese ambassador to Myanmar, also addressed the event in Yangon. She said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Myanmar in 1950, bilateral relations have withstood the test of international changes and have always developed steadily. The two sides have worked hand in hand, and the people are close to each other and have helped each other, said the ambassador, adding that she hoped non-governmental organizations of both countries will continue to promote the construction of a China-Myanmar community with a shared future. Gao Ping, Chinese consul general in Mandalay, delivered a speech at the event in Mandalay, saying that no matter how the international situation changes, China has always adhered to the principles of amity, sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusiveness. She added that China considers Myanmar as a good neighbor with blood ties, as a relative, and as a friend, and has always taken the well-being of the two peoples as the starting point and foothold for formulating policies toward Myanmar. - Xinhua

Philippines' jobless rate rises to 4.1 per cent in April

MANILA (Xinhua): The Philippines' unemployment rate in April rose to 4.1 per cent, up from 3.9 per cent in March, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said Friday. PSA Chief Dennis Mapa told a press conference that an estimated 2.06 million Filipinos were out of work in April this year, higher than the number of unemployed people in April 2024 at 2.04 million. Despite the slight uptick in unemployment, Department of Economy, Planning, and Development officer in charge and Undersecretary for Policy and Planning Rosemarie Edillon said in a statement that the Philippine labor market continues to demonstrate resilience amid global headwinds. "We remain on track to meet our target unemployment range of 4.4 to 4.7 percent set under the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028," she said. Meanwhile, the Philippines' gross international reserves rose slightly to US$105.5 billion at the end of May from US$105.3 billion a month earlier, the central bank said on Friday, citing preliminary data. The forex reserves represent an external liquidity buffer equivalent to 7.3 months worth of imports of goods and payments of services and primary income, which the central bank said was robust. - Xinhua

Oil prices headed for rebound this week as US-China trade talks resume

SINGAPORE: Oil prices slipped on Friday but were on track for their first weekly gain in three weeks after US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping resumed trade talks, raising hopes for growth and stronger demand in the world's two largest economies. Brent crude futures fell 19 sen, or 0.3 per cent, to US$65.15 a barrel as of 0441 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate crude gave up 20 sen, also 0.3 per cent, to US$63.17, after gaining around 50 sen on Thursday. On a weekly basis, both benchmarks were on track to settle higher after falling for two straight weeks. Brent has advanced 2.1 per cent this week, while WTI is trading 4 per cent higher. China's official Xinhua news agency said trade talks between Xi and Trump took place at Washington's request. Trump said the call had led to a "very positive conclusion," adding the US was "in very good shape with China and the trade deal." Canada also continued trade talks with the US, with Prime Minister Mark Carney in direct contact with Trump, according to Industry Minister Melanie Joly. The oil market continued to swing with news on tariff negotiations and data showing how trade uncertainty and the impact of the US levies are flowing through into the global economy. "The potential for increased US sanctions in Venezuela to limit crude exports and the potential for Israeli strike on Iranian infrastructure add to upside risks for prices," analysts at BMI, a Fitch affiliate, said in a note on Friday. "But both weaker demand for oil and increased production from both OPEC+ and non-OPEC producers will add to downside price pressures in the coming quarters." Top exporter Saudi Arabia cut its July crude prices for Asia to near two-month lows. That was a smaller price reduction than expected after OPEC+ agreed to ramp up output by 411,000 barrels per day in July. The kingdom had been pushing for a bigger output hike, part of a broader strategy to win back market share and discipline over-producers in OPEC+, which groups the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies including Russia.
