The entire Call of Duty World War 2 RCE hack controversy explained
It's been not a great start for Call of Duty World War 2 on the Xbox Game Pass. Players have been reporting about their systems being attacked by severe RCE hacks, compromising the whole machine.
Call of Duty World War 2 became a part of the highly popular subscription service on June 30, making it the fourth available CoD title in Xbox Game Pass, after Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III, and Warzone. But no CoD fan could ever imagine in their worst nightmares what would happen next.
Call of Duty World War 2 gets hit by RCE hackers after being added to Xbox Game Pass
Call of Duty World War 2 was one of the most successful titles in the entire franchise. There is no doubt that fans became immensely happy after the game became available on Xbox Game Pass.
But what happened next was utterly shocking.
There have been several reports from the fans that after downloading the game from Game Pass, their system got seriously exploited by Remote Code Execution (RCE) hackers. In one instance, the hackers even went on to take control of the whole computer of a user and opened up the notepad in it to communicate with him.
This is actually one of the most conercing and shocking incidents in the gaming world ever.
No one would imagine how serious the consequences of RCE hacking can become. This is actually a type of cyberattack where the targeted machine or server gets compromised after remotely executing some arbitrary codes on them. These malicious codes usually consist of scripts, binaries, and commands to make the system vulnerable.
As Call of Duty World War 2 is an eight year old game, it needed some proper security layers before being added to Game Pass.
As the time goes by, the hackers are becoming more and more advanced. So, to cope up with them, serious anti-cyber attack measures should be implemented in older titles if those are going to be made available on modern platforms.
As of now, there has been no official response yet from either Activision or Microsoft regarding this RCE massacre. Until some official hotfix arrives, players are strictly advised to stay away from downloading Call of Duty World War 2 from Xbox Game Pass.
Yes, players who have the original game purchased previously can play the game without any hassle.
It's still unclear how deep the hackers have dug into Xbox Game Pass and Call of Duty World War 2, so an official explanation of the whole situation is the need of the hour right now. A few days ago,
some older Call of Duty titles got sudden updates
, speculating a potential entry into the Xbox Game Pass. However, after this severe attack on CoD WW2, those titles seem even more unlikely to be featured in the popular subscription system.

Microsoft layoffs: Xbox executive suggests laid-off workers ask ChatGPT for career advice
Amid sweeping layoffs at Microsoft's gaming studios, an Xbox executive has urged employees affected by the job cuts to seek advice and emotional support from AI chatbots. 'No Al tool is a replacement for your voice or your lived experience. But at a time when mental energy is scarce, these tools can help get you unstuck faster, calmer, and with more clarity,' Matt Turnbull, an executive producer at Xbox Games Studio, wrote in a LinkedIn post that has now been deleted. Stating that he would be 'remiss in not trying to offer the best advice I can under the circumstances', Turnbull said, 'I've been experimenting with ways to use LLM AI tools (like ChatGPT or Copilot) to help reduce the emotional and cognitive load that comes with job loss.' While more people are turning to ChatGPT for low-cost therapy and advice, experts have raised concerns about the safety and reliability of such AI tools. Even ChatGPT's own terms of service state that its output may not always be accurate. 'You should not rely on Output from our Services as a sole source of truth or factual information, or as a substitute for professional advice,' the Terms of Use page reads. Acknowledging that people have 'strong feelings' about AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot, Turnbull suggested that those who are feeling overwhelmed could use them to get advice about creating resumes, career planning, and applying for new roles. 'These are really challenging times, and if you're navigating a layoff or even quietly preparing for one, you're not alone and you don't have to go it alone,' he added. His remarks come days after Microsoft said that it is laying off as many as 9,100 employees, or about 4 percent of its workforce, in yet another round of cuts this year. Two months ago, the Windows-maker had announced it was cutting more than 6,000 employees, followed by an additional 305 reductions in early June. The company's Xbox division has reportedly been hit hardest by the layoffs with Microsoft cancelling several new video game launches and other services. It has also closed its office in Pakistan after 25 years, according to a report by TechRadar. While big tech companies are spending billions of dollars to build AI infrastructure, layoffs continue. For instance, Microsoft has announced plans to invest $80 billion in AI infrastructure this year. On the other hand, more than 62,114 tech workers have been laid off from both large and small tech firms so far this year, according to the independent tracker

Xbox Game Studios exec gives ‘AI prompts' to laid-off Microsoft employees to handle emotional stress caused by job loss; deletes post after backlash
Xbox Game Studios Executive Producer Matt Turnbull has recommended that recently laid-off Microsoft employees use AI chatbots to cope with job loss, offering specific prompts to help workers navigate unemployment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Turnbull's since-deleted LinkedIn post suggested using tools like ChatGPT and Copilot to "help reduce the emotional and cognitive load that comes with job loss." Turnbull's recommendation comes as Microsoft cuts 9,100 employees across the company, with Xbox divisions particularly affected by studio closures and game cancellations. "These are really challenging times, and if you're navigating a layoff or even quietly preparing for one, you're not alone and you don't have to go it alone," Turnbull wrote in his original post. The exec provided detailed AI prompt suggestions for affected workers, including career planning assistance: "Act as a career coach. I've been laid off from a [role] in the game industry. Help me build a 30-day plan to regroup, research new roles, and start applying without burning out." Executive's tone-deaf timing draws backlash His recommendations extended to emotional support, suggesting workers ask AI: "I'm struggling with imposter syndrome after being laid off. Can you help me reframe this experience in a way that reminds me what I'm good at?" His recommendations extended to emotional support, suggesting workers ask AI: "I'm struggling with imposter syndrome after being laid off. Can you help me reframe this experience in a way that reminds me what I'm good at?" The executive emphasized that "no AI tool is a replacement for your voice or your lived experience," but argued these tools could help workers "get unstuck faster, calmer, and with more clarity." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The suggestion drew criticism from gaming industry professionals, prompting Turnbull to delete his post. The timing proved particularly sensitive as Microsoft invests $80 billion in AI infrastructure while simultaneously reducing its workforce. Xbox head Phil Spencer acknowledged the difficult moment in his memo to employees: "Simply put, we would not be where we are today without the time, energy, and creativity of those whose roles are impacted." Spencer explained the cuts were necessary to "position Gaming for enduring success" and focus on "strategic growth areas." The layoffs represent Microsoft's fourth round of job cuts in 18 months, following previous reductions affecting Activision Blizzard, Xbox studios, and other gaming divisions.
