The Current Bull and Bear Cases for Gold and Silver
It's time for another rapid-fire breakdown of the bullish and bearish elements presently in play in the gold (GCQ25) and silver (SIN25) futures markets. Then I'll give you my biases on price trajectories. Bullish Factors for Gold and Silver Near-term and longer-term technicals remain firmly bullish, including price uptrends in place on the daily, weekly, and monthly bar charts. Safe-haven demand continues to flow into gold and silver amid still-elevated global trade tensions, Middle East uncertainty, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Central banks likely continue to accumulate gold as several major countries work to 'de-dollarize' and hold other assets in their sovereign reserves. The BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) conference in early July will likely put a hotter spotlight on de-dollarization efforts among member countries. The U.S. Dollar Index ($DXY) (a basket of six major global currencies weighted against the greenback) is still not far above its yearly low and longer-term charts show prices still trending lower. Crude oil (CLN25) prices are trending up, and Nymex July crude this week hit a nine-week high. Geopolitical hotspots that are bullish for gold and silver are never far away from the front burner, including Middle East tensions and the Russia-Ukraine war. Bearish Factors for Gold and Silver The bull-market run in gold that began in 2022 is very mature and bulls may now be tired. Gold prices have been trading sideways and choppy, on a daily basis, since the late-April record high. The rallies in U.S. stock indexes to three-month highs this week suggest improved trader and investor risk appetite in the general marketplace, which is bearish for the safe-haven metals. Generally decent U.S economic numbers recently, along with the prospect of sticky price inflation, are likely to keep the Federal Reserve standing pat on its monetary policy and not lowering U.S. interest rates anytime soon. That's bullish for the U.S. dollar and in turn bearish for gold and silver. Platinum's (PLN25) strong price rally recently is likely prompting more speculative buying interest in platinum and taking away some investment demand for gold and silver. It may be that global trade tensions have already peaked and that the situation will de-escalate in the coming weeks or months. That would be a bearish scenario for the safe-haven metals. The 10-year U.S. Treasury note yield (V2Y00) that is presently around 4.5% is attractive to some investors and may be pulling away investor demand for gold and silver, which carry no dividends or annual yields. My Bias on Gold and Silver Futures I think gold prices will remain elevated but will need a fresh, major catalyst — likely via a geopolitical flare-up or major global incident — to push prices to a new record high in the coming months. The gold market has become more technically bullish recently, posting a strong rebound from the May low and restarting a price uptrend on the daily bar chart. However, the gold market has stiff technical resistance to overcome for prices to advance to new record highs. Those chart resistance levels are the May high of $3,477.30 and the contract high of $3,539.30, basis August Comex futures. Since gold scored a new record high of $3,485.60 an ounce, basis nearby Comex futures, in April, I still maintain that silver appears to be a value-buying opportunity, since it's still just under $15.00 below its record high. I'll bet I've forgotten something on the bull or bear side for gold and silver. Tell me what you think. I really enjoy getting email from my valued Barchart readers all over the world. Should You Buy XRP (Ripple) While It's Under $2.50? A Wall Street Analyst Says It Could Soar 150%
XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) has advanced 13% year to date. It currently trades at $2.30 and has a market value of $135 billion as of June 10. But at least one Wall Street analyst thinks the cryptocurrency will be worth much more in three years. Geoff Kendrick at Standard Chartered recently predicted XRP would overtake Ethereum by 2028. To put that in context, Ethereum currently has a market value of $335 billion, so XRP must increase nearly 150% to reach the same level. That would bring its price to $5.70. Here's what investors should know. The XRP Ledger was designed to make cross-border payments faster and cheaper XRP is the native digital asset on the XRP Ledger, the blockchain developed by technology company Ripple to simplify cross-border transactions. Traditionally, banks have used the SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications) system to move money across borders, but transactions can be expensive and costly. The XRP Ledger is a faster and cheaper alternative to SWIFT. Ripple Payments lets financial institutions use the blockchain (with XRP as a bridge currency) to send cross-border payments. If banks and payment service providers adopt Ripple products, demand for XRP will increase and the token could become more valuable. However, the particular tailwind will likely be modest at best. In my opinion, the more likely catalyst is increased capital inflows as more retail investors and institutional investors buy the cryptocurrency for their portfolios. XRP's price will increase if more financial institutions use it as a bridge currency Asset manager Guggenheim recently tapped the XRP Ledger to issue digital commercial paper, a fixed-income asset backed by U.S. Treasuries. The XRP Ledger currently accounts for a small percentage of tokenized real-world assets -- which are forecast to hit $19 trillion by 2033 -- but the addition of tokenized debt to the platform is a positive development that could lead to more transactions on the network. However, not many financial institutions use XRP as a bridge currency, and I doubt that will change. Price volatility makes cryptocurrency a risky way to move money. Ripple has addressed that problem by creating a stablecoin called Ripple USD. Yet, while payments made in Ripple USD incur transaction fees denominated in XRP, those fees are small and the incremental demand for the cryptocurrency is negligible. For that reason, financial institutions using Ripple Payments are unlikely to be a material catalyst for XRP. XRP's price will increase if more retail and institutional investors buy the token The Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the largest derivatives marketplace in the United States, introduced XRP futures trading in May. Meanwhile, a few asset managers have rolled out XRP futures ETFs. Both create new ways for investors to trade XRP, but the most important potential catalyst is the pending approval of several applications for spot XRP ETFs. Spot XRP ETFs would own the crytocurrency and track its price, rather than trading futures contracts. In other words, spot XRP ETFs would give investors direct exposure to the cryptocurrency through traditional brokerage accounts, without the high fees associated with cryptocurrency exchanges. By reducing friction, spot ETFs could unlock demand among retail and institutional investors. Indeed, Bitcoin 's price has skyrocketed 136% since spot Bitcoin ETFs were approved in January 2024. I think approval of spot XRP ETFs could lead to similar price appreciation, such that XRP could potentially overtake Ethereum by 2028. That makes XRP a compelling investment option. That said, I would rather own a spot XRP ETF than the cryptocurrency, so I plan to wait until those investment vehicles win SEC approval. Should you invest $1,000 in XRP right now? U.S. orders nonessential staffers, families to leave its Mideast embassies as tensions rise
WASHINGTON — The United States is reducing the presence of staffers who are not deemed essential to operations in the Middle East and their loved ones due to the potential for regional unrest, the State Department and military said Wednesday. Article content The State Department said it has ordered the departure of all nonessential personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad based on its latest review and a commitment 'to keeping Americans safe, both at home and abroad.' The embassy already had been on limited staffing, and the order will not affect a large number of personnel. Article content Article content The department, however, also is authorizing the departure of nonessential personnel and family members from Bahrain and Kuwait. That gives them the option of leaving those countries at government expense and with government assistance. Article content Article content Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth 'has authorized the voluntary departure of military dependents from locations' across the region, U.S. Central Command said in a statement. The command 'is monitoring the developing tension in the Middle East.' Article content Speaking at the Kennedy Center in Washington on Wednesday evening, President Donald Trump said, 'They are being moved out, because it could be a dangerous place, and we'll see what happens. We've given notice to move out, and we'll see what happens.' Article content Tensions in the region have been rising in recent days as talks between the U.S. and Iran over its rapidly advancing nuclear program appear to have hit an impasse. The talks seek to limit Iran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of some of the crushing economic sanctions that the U.S. has imposed on the Islamic Republic. Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful. Article content Article content The next round of talks — the sixth — had been tentatively scheduled for this weekend in Oman, according to two U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss diplomatic matters. However, those officials said Wednesday that it looked increasingly unlikely that the talks would happen. Article content Article content Trump, who has previously said Israel or the U.S. could carry out airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities if negotiations failed, gave a less-than-optimistic view about reaching a deal with Iran, telling the New York Post's 'Pod Force One' podcast that he was 'getting more and more less confident about' a deal.
