Four CHLA Units Receive Beacon Healthcare Awards from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses

Yahoo13-02-2025
LOS ANGELES, February 13, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) announced this week that four inpatient care units recently received 2024 Beacon Awards for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
The AACN honors healthcare units that deliver excellent care to patients and their families with the prestigious Beacon Award designation. Recipients demonstrate superior patient clinical outcomes, patient experience, patient safety, quality improvement, work environment, professional nursing practices and opportunities for nursing education and certification growth.
"This honor reflects the hard work and dedication of our nursing teams and their commitment to our mission to create hope and build healthier futures for children," says Kelly M. Johnson, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at CHLA. "The award also recognizes CHLA's ability to attract and retain talented, specialized nurses who improve our clinical outcomes and enhance the hospital's healing, child-friendly, family-centered environment."
Four units at the hospital were honored. The hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit earned Gold Beacon Award recognition while the Heart Institute's Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit earned a Silver Beacon Award. "Additionally, the hospital's two separate 5th floor medical surgical units – 5 East and 5 West – were also honored by the AACN. These two units provide services for children requiring specialty care in Diabetes, Cystic Fibrosis, and infants needing care after leaving the hospital's Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit. The 5th floor teams also provide care that specializes in respiratory illnesses and infectious diseases, and for patients requiring long-term home mechanical ventilation."
The Cardiovascular Acute Care Unit also has an existing Gold-level Beacon Award through March 2026, bringing CHLA's current total of Beacon Award-recognized units to five.
To determine Beacon status, quantitative and qualitative data from each unit is evaluated and compared against units from other hospitals submitting for the recognition, reflecting a competitive process that CHLA successfully navigated. The data submitted for the Beacon Awards in 2024 looks at a variety of hospital acquired conditions that are identified as "nursing sensitive indicators" – where the quality of nursing can play a role in the clinical outcomes.
The data includes:
Catheter-associated urinary tract infection rate
Central line-associated bloodstream infection rate
Data measuring both falls with injury rate and injuries to the skin caused by pressure or friction
Nursing experience data; nursing professional certification rates; and nursing turnover data
"This information can be valuable and meaningful to families when they make their healthcare choices for their children," Johnson says.

Folqs Highlights First-Day, Grass-Fed Colostrum Powder Amid Global Surge in Demand

Wilmington, DE, Aug. 08, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Folqs, a U.S.-based wellness company, introduces new consumer product, Folqs First-Day Colostrum Powder . This positions the company within the growing colostrum supplement sector, which has recently exceeded $3 billion in global market value, according to industry research. The product is formulated from bovine colostrum collected on the first day after birth and sourced exclusively from grass-fed, pasture-raised cows located in the United States. Processing and packaging are conducted domestically at an FDA-registered facility that operates under Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). This announcement marks Folqs' formal entry into a sector experiencing measurable growth. A 2025 report from Grand View Research estimates the global colostrum market will sustain a compound annual growth rate of approximately 7% through 2030. Concurrently, online search interest in colostrum-related supplements has risen 68% year-over-year, based on recent data from Google Trends. Product Developed for Adults Focused on Dietary Supplementation According to the company, Folqs First-Day Colostrum Powder is unflavoured and designed to dissolve quickly into liquids. It is intended for use by adults who are exploring food-based supplement options. The product contains naturally occurring bioactive compounds found in colostrum, including immunoglobulins and growth factors Folqs has indicated it does not add any artificial ingredients or flavoring agents during production. The colostrum used is collected only after the needs of the newborn calf have been met, under a sourcing policy the company refers to as 'Calf-First.' This policy stipulates that calves receive their full share before any surplus is gathered for human use. Each batch undergoes third-party testing, with screening for microbiological content, heavy metals, and nutritional composition. Documentation of testing is maintained for internal quality control and regulatory compliance. Market Timing Reflects Broader Consumer Shift Toward Food-Based Supplements The decision to launch into the colostrum segment comes at a time when consumer attention to supplement sourcing and transparency has intensified. Data from the Council for Responsible Nutrition (2024) indicates that only 52% of U.S. supplement users consider product labels to be 'very trustworthy.' Folqs' leadership said that these statistics informed its approach to formulation, production, and consumer messaging. 'Consumers are tired of vague 'proprietary blends.' By sharing our lab reports and guaranteeing results, we're setting a new transparency bar for the $3 billion colostrum space,' said David Johnson, Company Spokesperson. Johnson noted that Folqs will prioritize third-party testing as part of its operational model. 'We've aligned our product development process with the demand for greater transparency in supplement sourcing,' Johnson said. 'Every decision, from raw ingredient origin to packaging, was shaped by current expectations in the space.' Availability and Purchasing Details Folqs First-Day Colostrum Powder is exclusively available through the company's official website, Pricing, serving guidelines, and detailed product specifications are provided on the site. No retail or third-party distribution agreements were announced at the time of release. The product is offered under a customer refund policy referred to as the 90-Day Money-Back guarantee, allowing purchasers to request a refund if unsatisfied. Folqs stated that this policy was introduced to address consumer hesitations common in the dietary supplement category. No Comparisons or Claims Made Against Competing Brands Under established content distribution standards, Folqs has not made any comparative statements regarding other colostrum products on the market. Folqs emphasized that its entry into the colostrum market is grounded in sourcing and production controls, rather than marketing-driven distinctions. It has not used or referenced any competing companies or their product names in its communications. Regulatory and Testing Framework The colostrum is processed in a facility that meets federal registration and cGMP compliance criteria. Third-party laboratories are used to conduct batch testing. All production occurs within the United States, and the company maintains that its supply chain remains fully domestic at this time. No claims have been made about the product's ability to prevent, treat, or cure any medical condition. The company has not submitted its product for review by the Food and Drug Administration, as it is sold as a dietary supplement and not a drug. About Folqs Folqs is a privately held wellness company headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware. It specializes in sourcing and manufacturing food-based supplements. The company's operational focus includes domestic production, third-party testing, and ingredient transparency. Folqs First-Day Colostrum Powder is its first product offering. Is Moldy Cheese Safe To Eat?

Cheese is probably something you always have on hand. But if you're lax about taking stock of what's in your fridge, you might notice white or green fuzz growing on it when you reach for it. Mold and cheese have an important relationship that begins long before it hits the store shelves, but it can be tricky for the casual cheese eater to grasp. Mold plays a role in cheesemaking, but you can't always see it. And some molds you see are safe to eat, while others are best avoided. 'All cheeses are ripened through the actions of various microbes, both invisible and visible, including molds, fungi, yeasts and more,' explained Jamie Png, an American Cheese Society cheese industry professional. 'So if you're looking for something mold-free, you might find it difficult.' Still, it can be unsettling to see moldy blemishes appear on your cheese, especially if they weren't there when you bought it. How you handle these instances depends on the type of cheese you're dealing with. Food safety and cheese experts explain what you should know about mold and cheese. Why do some cheeses have visible mold? Some cheese varieties naturally have a moldy appearance, explained Mark Johnson, assistant director at the Center for Dairy Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The blue veins in a wedge of gorgonzola or the white rind on a wheel of brie are examples of mold. Mold is often what helps cheese develop its unique flavor and characteristics. Johnson said eating these cheeses, mold and all, is 'perfectly safe.' When you buy naturally moldy cheeses, the mold is already there, said Trevor Craig, a food safety expert and corporate director of technical training and consulting at Microbac Laboratories. 'The growth should be uniform, the same color and incorporated into the cheese.' In contrast, new, unwanted mold usually appears on the outside edges only, Craig said. 'It may also be a different color and texture and will likely be sporing and fuzzy.' Generally, cheese shouldn't change much in appearance after you buy it and store it in your fridge, Png said. When you notice mold growing on cheese that shouldn't have it, such as mozzarella, cheddar or Swiss, you shouldn't eat it. It most likely wouldn't make you sick, though, Johnson said. It just wouldn't taste very good. For hard cheese that grows mold in your fridge, like Parmesan or cheddar, you can usually just cut off the moldy parts and eat the rest, Craig said. Johnson said to avoid cutting directly into the mold or risk spreading it to other parts of the cheese, and to cut off an additional inch around the mold to be safe. Soft cheeses, like ricotta or cottage cheese, are a different story. When you spot mold, Craig said you should throw away the whole container, as the mold could spread even when you can't see it. However, any time you see black or dark red mold growing on any cheese, throw it away, Png said. It's rare but it can be toxic. 'Other than that, the only real consequences of ingesting most molds will be an unpleasant taste and texture,' she said. A few signs that cheese isn't safe to eat. Cheese is generally a safe product, Johnson said. Even though some cheeses can have strong flavors and odors, one of the best ways to tell if it's gone off is if it doesn't taste or smell like it should. Some cheeses might develop a 'kerosene flavor' or 'taste somewhat like a Band-Aid,' which indicates mold might have penetrated it, he said. In those cases, throw the hunk of cheese away. You can't see harmful bacteria, like or salmonella, but there are some signs its growth could be happening, Craig said. For instance, pay attention to color or texture changes, sliminess or a watery residue. And, of course, if you spot mold that shouldn't be there, cut it off or toss it, depending on the cheese, he said. How to store cheese properly: Hard cheeses can last three to four weeks after opening when stored properly, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Soft cheeses usually last about a week after opening the package. Png recommended storing cheese in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator, 'ideally wrapped in cheese paper or wax paper.' This can keep moisture out, which might encourage unwanted mold growth. She said using a plastic container or plastic wrap can trap moisture in. A plastic zip-top bag can work, too, Johnson said. But, if you have a way to vacuum seal your cheese, that's a better option. Store blue cheeses separately, because there's a chance that the mold from them could spread to other cheeses, Png said. Every few days, take a look at your cheese, she recommended. 'A lot of the work of a cheese seller is maintaining the condition of cheeses in your care, by making sure to cut away any small spots of mold that inevitably develop on the surface of a healthy cheese. Doing the same with a piece of cheese you brought home will ensure that your cheese stays in great condition.' HuffPost.

Olympic gold medalist Nathan Chen skipping 2026 Games, plans to attend medical school

The 2026 Winter Olympics will not be featuring Nathan Chen. The reigning men's figure skating gold medalist told the Los Angeles Times he will not return to competition for the Games next year, instead opting to pursue a career in medicine. The 26-year-old graduated from Yale last year and is in the process of applying to medical school. From the Times: 'I just want to open doors to kind of see what's the best sort of approach for me,' Chen told The Times. 'And frankly, at this point in time in my life, I've already accomplished enough in skating that I'm quite satisfied with my career.' Chen has been one of the biggest names in figure skating over the past decade, winning two Olympic gold medals plus a bronze, three world championships and six national titles. He still holds the world record for a combined score with a 335.30 total at the 2019 Grand Prix Final. His career reached its apex in the Beijing Games in 2022, when he recovered from a massively disappointing fifth-place finish in 2018 to bring home the gold with a performance that included a world record in the short program and his signature quads in the free skate. He also helped lead Team USA to gold in the team competition, which was upgraded from silver due to the disqualification of the Russian team. Nicknamed the "Quad King," Chen hasn't appeared in a figure skating competition since those Olympics. Instead, he has focused on his studies at Yale and launched Your True Step, a series of skating seminars with ice dancer Jean-Luc Baker and choreographer Sam Chouinard. He told the Times that taking the MCAT was more nerve-racking than competing in the Olympics and that he is interested in cardiology or oncology as a specialty, with cardiothoracic surgery a particular curiosity. From the Times: 'The basis of being a doctor, I think, is to help people,' Chen said. 'I think that's something that I didn't necessarily feel as an athlete, that I felt was a little bit lacking, and I get a little bit of that sense doing YTS.' While the absence of Chen removes a major gold-medal contender from the field, Team USA still figures to have the favorite in the men's competition. Ilia Malinin, 20, has already done something Chen never did, landing the fabled quad axel, and has won the last two world championships, the latter in dominant fashion with six quad jumps. The 2025 world championships also saw the U.S. win the women's competition, thanks to Alysa Liu's incredible comeback, and the ice dancing, closely won by Madison Chock and Evan Bates for their third straight title.
