Just one in eight electric cars qualify for Labour's new grants
On Monday, the Government began accepting applications for the electric vehicle (EV) grants and will begin payouts to manufacturers from next week.
But at launch, the scheme will only apply to 17 cars sold by Citroen, Renault, Nissan and Vauxhall, with other manufacturers still waiting to find out if their vehicles are eligible.
There are currently more than 130 EV models on sale in Britain, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Labour's grant scheme applies to new vehicles with a list price of £37,000 or lower. Manufacturers can receive either £3,750 or £1,500 in support, which is passed on to the consumer in the form of a discount.
For a particular model to qualify, manufacturers must submit information about where the car is assembled and where its battery was manufactured, with the upper grant only awarded to those that score the highest for sustainability.
This will rule out cars made in China, where more than 60pc of power is still generated by burning coal, ministers have said. In response, Chinese-owned brands such as BYD, MG and others have slashed their prices to remain competitive.
But Western car makers have complained that they remain in the dark about which models will ultimately qualify until their funding applications have been approved.
EV sales slowed in July as drivers held off from buying in hopes of a later discount.
A Whitehall source said the Government was working through applications as quickly as possible and expected around two thirds of cars priced under £37,000 to be eligible overall.
On Monday, 13 more cars were confirmed as eligible for the £1,500 discount – taking the total to 17.
They include the Renault Megane and Vauxhall Corsa Electric in addition to the previously announced Citroen ë-C3, e-C4, ë-C5 and ë-Berlingo models.
No car has yet qualified for the full £3,500 discount. However, it is understood that the new Nissan Leaf, which will be launched in the spring and made at the company's factory in Sunderland, is expected to be eligible.
Heidi Alexander, the Transport Secretary said: 'With discounts on seventeen car models announced this week alone, we're delivering on our promise to make it easier and cheaper for families to go electric.
'This is about backing drivers, putting money back into people's pockets and creating the jobs and growth that will drive Britain forward, delivering on our Plan for Change.'
Andy Palmer, a veteran car industry executive and founder of Palmer Energy Technology, said: '17 models is a good start, but what we need is the comprehensive list so that consumers can take comfort in being able to make a choice and not wait for models to be drip-fed.
'The longer the list takes to be final, the longer people will hesitate. The brands now available, Citroën, Renault, Vauxhall and Nissan are all solid – so the choices are already consumer friendly in the sub-£37,000 price bracket.'
Dan Caesar, of Electric Vehicles UK, added: 'It's encouraging to see that 17 battery EVs are now even cheaper as a result of the Electric Car Grant. There are the best part of 50 models now under the £37,000 threshold, with some as low as £15,000, and we would hope to see a few more added in short order.
'Looking at the recent data of new and used battery EV sales, appetite and demand are clearly growing, and are only likely to accelerate as the Electric Car Grant begins to gain traction.'

Mercedes CEO Says We Need A Reality Check Over Combustion Bans
By signing up I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy . You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. The Mazda CX-5 has always been the crossover for people who actually like driving. Does the 2025 model still live up to this expectation? Mercedes Is Concerned About Combustion Restrictions Mercedes, like most other automakers, had once committed to going all-electric by the end of this decade, but weak demand for EVs has forced the company to rethink those targets. Now, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius said that even Europe's planned 2035 combustion ban is too ambitious, reports Reuters. 'We need a reality check. Otherwise, we are heading at full speed against a wall,' the CEO told German newspaper Handelsblatt, adding that Europe's car market could 'collapse' if the ban is approved after its review later this year. 2025 Audi S3 vs Mercedes-AMG CLA 35: the executive decision Watch More Käallenius Wants A Different Approach Source: Mercedes This comes after Mercedes-AMG revealed plans to develop a new V8 engine that has no defined 'natural end date,' citing customer demand for more combustion-powered products. Regular, non-AMG Mercedes products will also have a gas option for a long time to come. 'Of course, we have to decarbonize, but it has to be done in a technology-neutral way,' Källenius said. 'We must not lose sight of our economy.' This mirrors earlier comments made by the CEO, after he said in June that he believes 'the most rational approach in the current situation is for an established manufacturer to do both [EV and gas] and not neglect one technology.' Porsche has also walked back plans for going all-electric, thanks to weak demand, and like Mercedes, it sees a varied product offering as key to sustained sales. Essentially, Mercedes and other automakers in Europe are happy to continue developing EVs for those who want them, but they believe that while a ban on combustion cars would lead to a sharp rise in sales just before gas cars are outlawed, disaster would soon follow as consumers look to other brands. View post: Mercedes-Benz Confirms EV Pricing Cut Ahead News Mercedes-Benz Confirms EV Pricing Cut Ahead Price drops of up to $15,000 indicate the EQ line might have a pricing problem. Steven Paul Lots To Come From Mercedes Earlier this month, Källenius revealed that Mercedes-Benz intends to launch an onslaught of 18 new vehicles by 2027, with half of them being all-electric and the other half featuring combustion engines of various descriptions. The CEO says this will be 'probably the most intense amount of launches in a three-year period in the history of [Mercedes].' These vehicles will be ready to live until 2035, but it's clear that the company wants to sell them long after that. With the Trump administration reversing the vast majority of CAFE standards fines and nixing tailpipe emissions rules, Mercedes now hopes that a similarly tolerant view of gas power will take hold in Europe, and given the influx of remarkably good yet well priced EVs from China on the Old Continent, it's quite possible that local lawmakers will change their tune on the combustion ban to sustain the European auto industry. The Ferrari 488 is one of the brand's most well-known models The Ferrari 488 GTB came out in 2015 as the replacement for the similarly styled 458. One such 488 is for sale on Exotic Car Trader, and you can check out the listing by clicking here. 0:01 / 0:09 Audi A5 replaces A4: So, what's changed? Watch More The Ferrari 488 GTB used a twin-turbo 3.9L V8 with an all-aluminum dry sump. In the regular GTB and Spider variants, it made 661 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque through a Getrag 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Ferrari claimed a 0-60 mph time of 3 seconds flat, with a blazing top speed of 205 mph. Bringing all of those horses to a stop takes some effort, but it's a task that's handily taken care of by the carbon-ceramic brakes derived from technology used in the LaFerrari. With massive 398 mm discs up front and 360 mm discs at the back, Ferrari claimed that the 488 has up to 9% reduced braking distance compared to the previous 458. 2018 Ferrari 488 GTB — Source: Exotic Car Trader Visually, the 488 draws inspiration from the 458, with the same sleek lines, wide haunches, and elongated headlamps that extend up the front fender. The rear fenders give way to two massive air ducts on each side, with a central piece that gives them a look similar to a flying buttress. The rear end is equally as curvy, with rounded taillights at either end that share a space with the exits of the fender air ducts. Thinking about selling your car? That exterior is finished in the classic Ferrari shade of Rosso Corsa with 20″ forged dark painted wheels. The cabin is finished in a contrasting Nero leather interior, evoking the classic racing look of red over black, while incorporating some exterior details inside, including Cavallino-stitched Daytona racing seats, red stitching throughout, and Rosso-colored seatbelts. Any fears of damaging that exotic red paint will also be alleviated by the inclusion of paint protection film (PPF) over the entire body. It is undeniably one of the most recognizable models in the Prancing Horse's stables, much like the 458 that preceded it. I'd say something like 'the $239,000 asking price isn't cheap,' but this is one of Ferrari's flagship models, so of course it won't be. Given that this particular example has some tasteful options that perfectly complement the car and shows such low miles on the odometer, it's one of the best ones available on the market right now. It's certainly not for everyone, but those fortunate enough to sit behind its wheel know that they're in the presence of Italian royalty. About the Author Gabriel Ionica View Profile

Just Eat £3.6bn takeover by Prosus wins green light from EU watchdogs
Just Eat's 4.1 billion euro (£3.6 billion) takeover has been approved by European regulators after buyer Prosus agreed to address its competition concerns. The European Commission said new conditions to the tie-up will protect consumer choice when it comes to ordering food at home. Prosus, a technology firm which is majority-owned by South Africa's Naspers, agreed to buy the Dutch takeaway delivery giant in May. But the EU regulator said it had concerns about the fact that Naspers already has a 28% stake in Delivery Hero, a rival to Just Eat. The deal could reduce competition in the takeaway market and lead to coordination between the two firms, which could have resulted in higher prices for consumers, the Commission said. To address these concerns, Naspers has agreed to reduce its shareholding in Delivery Hero to a 'very low percentage' within 12 months, which it did not disclose, but would make it no longer the biggest shareholder. The regulator said the modified takeover terms eased its competition concerns and allowed it to give it the green light. European Commission executive Teresa Ribera said: 'We had concerns that the acquisition of Just Eat by Naspers could allow the parties to coordinate their behaviour in the food delivery market, reducing competition and consumers choice. 'Today's binding commitments preserve both competition and consumer choice when ordering food at home. 'This decision also sends a clear warning to an industry with recent anti-trust issues: we won't tolerate any anti-competitive behaviour that may harm consumers.' Prosus is expected to be the fourth largest food delivery group in the world following the takeover. The takeaway sector has been the subject of major takeover swoops in recent months, with UK-listed Deliveroo agreeing to be bought by US rival DoorDash for around £2.9 billion. Prosus chief executive Fabricio Bloisi said he was 'thrilled' by the 'swift approval' of the group's acquisition. 'Innovation doesn't wait, and we can now get to work quickly, as AI (artificial intelligence) is rapidly reshaping food delivery,' he said. 'Our ambition is clear: to build a true European tech champion and lead the next chapter in food delivery innovation.'
