5 Ways Leaders Can Make The Most Of What They Already Have

Your team can be your greatest asset
Today's leaders are operating in a challenging business climate, often with squeezed budgets and stretched resources. At the same time, they are under huge pressure to innovate, perform and deliver results.
Given that many leaders are unable to secure more budget or more people to achieve their objectives, how can they draw on the resources they already have at their disposal to drive real business value?
Here are five ways leaders can make the most of what they already have:
Leadership involves making tough decisions and navigating challenging situations where things don't always go to plan. Past events can cloud our future actions, increasing our reliance on external reassurance or resources.
Yet to succeed as leaders, we must be able to break free from the limitations and misconceptions holding us back, according to Sukaiyna Gokal, founder of self-healing platform Garden of Ayden and author of The Human TOUCH.
'Many leaders don't realize how suffocated and weighed down they may be by the events they have etched into their hearts and minds,' Gokal explains. 'Our feelings that accompany those events muddle our experiences, with cognitive biases reaffirming the unhelpful narrative.'
Gokal recommends that instead of looking outward in, leaders should measure themselves 'via the eyes of how others view you.' She says: 'Untangling yourself from the past and self-imposed limitations is the key to unleashing the true leadership potential that is already within you.'
While constant learning and upskilling are vital to leaders, so is tapping into the wealth of expertise you've already amassed to uncover new possibilities. 'From technical expertise to industry knowledge and unique processes, it's easy to forget the vast amounts of knowledge at our fingertips when we're faced with an unfamiliar challenge,' argues Lucy McCarraher, founder of publisher Rethink Press and author of Book Magic.
'When you take the time to recognize your existing knowledge and intellectual property, you begin to see just how much value you already deliver and how this can be applied to new situations,' McCarraher explains. 'Expand this to encompass the expertise of your team, partners and network and it's clear you're sitting on a knowledge goldmine.'
Your team is probably the greatest asset you have, but are you making the most of it? Georgina Woudstra, founder of training provider Team Coaching Studio and author of Mastering the Art of Team Coaching, believes that when leaders work with what is within their teams – rather than what should be – the extraordinary becomes possible. 'The wisdom a team needs is often already within reach; it simply hasn't been fully seen or heard,' Woudstra says.
Woudstra advises that to reinvigorate your team, you should start by paying attention to what's emerging in the here and now. 'Instead of rushing to fix or change, create space for honest dialogue, reflection and connection,' she says. 'This allows the team's innate intelligence to surface.'
Woudstra adds that teams don't need more tools or tighter control; they need leaders who can 'hold the space, tune into the energy of the team and foster collective awareness.' She recommends: 'Ask what's working well? Which stories, strengths and successes already exist? Invite the team to own its process and purpose. Often, a renewed sense of shared meaning is all it takes to spark fresh energy in an existing team.'
'For many organizations, their existing data assets could unlock a wealth of determinate value, yet data analytics continues to be confined to unactioned reports and dashboards,' notes Karl Dinkelmann, CEO of data consultancy Nexus Data and co-author of Drive RAPPID Results from Data. 'To understand how to maximize the resources at your disposal and drive your company's strategic priorities, you cannot neglect the power of data insights,' he says.
Dinkelmann argues that valuable data-led solutions do not always require expensive advanced analytics, machine learning or emerging artificial intelligence. For example, he suggests that equipping customer service agents with contract renewal dates means that if a customer calls about an issue that is then resolved, they could be transferred to the retention team while on the line, which could potentially result in a renewal. 'This is not possible if high-value data use cases have not been identified across the organization,' Dinkelmann explains, 'with frontline teams equipped with the reliable data to deliver against defined objectives and key results.'
It is important to bear in mind that optimizing yourself and your resources should not come at the expense of your own wellbeing or that of your team. 'To be in the strongest position to deliver value and see new opportunities, you have to invest in your performance sustainability,' says Lesley Cooper, founder and CEO of consultancy WorkingWell.
'Intentional recovery has to be a priority,' Cooper explains. She advises leaders to work with their body's ultradian rhythms, recovering energy in different dimensions every 90–120 minutes to create the best conditions for high performance. Cooper suggests: 'You can achieve this by engaging major muscles of your body, eating nutritious food and participating in activities that break linearity, like switching tasks, connecting with others or even listening to short bursts of your favorite music.'
Recovery should not be confused with rest. Rather, it is a series of conscious acts to replenish physical resources and redirect mental focus. 'Leaders can do a lot to nurture a culture where recovery is properly seen as a vital and deliberate investment in the next performance wave – and one that requires no capital investment,' Cooper says. 'Recharge and you'll see the difference in your ability to problem-solve.'
Making the most of what they already have is not a second-best option for leaders compared with having a bigger budget or a larger team. By promoting agility, wellbeing and positive thinking, it can actually be a highly effective strategy for enhancing competitiveness in an increasingly uncertain and volatile business landscape.

After the Ukrainian president and European leaders travelled to Washington on Monday, president Trump wrote on social media that the summit began "the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between president Putin and president Zelenskyy. "After that meeting takes place, we will have a trilat, which would be the two presidents, plus myself," he added. On Friday, Trump met Putin in Alaska in an effort to try to broker a peace deal between the two countries. At the time, Zelensky said no deal would be reached without the involvement of Ukraine. Meanwhile the war continues, with the Ukrainian air force saying that Russia launched 270 drone attacks overnight. Oil prices sold off in early trade, with brent crude (BZ=F) down 0.9% to trade below $66 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (CL=F) down 1% to trade around $62.80 per barrel. London's premier index was around 0.1% higher after the opening bell. The DAX (^GDAXI) in Germany also rose slightly. The cAC 40 (^FCHI) in Paris ticked up 0.2% The pan-European STOXX 600 (^STOXX) gained 0.1%. Allbirds is stumbling. Can new shoes made from trash help?

BY Listen to this Article More info 0:00 / 6:39 Allbirds made a name for itself by making shoes out of natural fibers like wool and tree pulp that weren't commonly used to make sneakers in the past. Today the company is stepping in a new direction with a shoe collection called Remix, which is made from a different material: trash. On the surface, the two Remix silhouettes look similar to other Allbirds sneakers: There's the sporty-looking Runner, and the streetwear-inspired Cruiser. But their familiar exterior belies the fact that they're actually made entirely from waste. The uppers are made from clothes destined for landfills; the soles are made from scraps of old shoes. And Allbirds is hoping that new materials can make the brand exciting again. The stumbling years Allbirds launched in 2016 and went public in 2021. But over the past three years, its revenues have plummeted. After its 2022 peak of $297.8 million, it generated only $189.8 million in revenue last year. The company is now trying to regain its footing. In March 2024, Allbirds promoted Joe Vernachio from the role of COO to CEO. Vernachio previously led Mountain Hardwear's turnaround from losses to profitability, and believes he can do the same with Allbirds. Part of the plan involves shrinking the brand's retail footprint to 21 stores this year from 43 in 2023. But it also involves introducing new and updated products while also telling a story about what the brand represents. The Remix collection encapsulates this strategy. Adrian Nyman, who was hired as the brand's chief design officer last year, argues that one way to add some excitement to the collection is to branch out into new materials. 'I believe we should open up the aperture of the brand by playing with different materials,' he says. 'As long as we're holding true to our commitment to sustainability, we owe the consumer as many permutations of this brand as possible.' That said, given our current moment of economic and political turbulence, many consumers aren't focused on environmentalism right now. So we'll have to wait and see how well the Remix collection resonates in the market. A Shoe That Tells a Story When Allbirds launched a decade ago, the impact of climate change was beginning to sink in, as natural disasters became more frequent. Consumers started to show interest in brands' environmental practices, which is why many of the startups that popped up during that era—including Reformation and Everlane—focused on an eco-friendly approach. But times have changed. According to McKinsey, many brands have seen softer sales over the past two years due to inflation; this has resulted in many of them scaling back their sustainability pledges. Footwear brands across the industry are rolling back their commitment to fight climate change: Nike has laid off dozens of sustainability managers as part of a broader cost-cutting effort, and Crocs has reset its net-zero carbon emissions goal from 2030 to 2040. Nyman says that many consumers appear to be less focused on the planet than they used to be. But he also says it would be a mistake for Allbirds—which was founded as a sustainable brand— to pull back on its commitments to the environment. 'Consumers may be distracted right now, and in a bit of a fever dream, but I think the pendulum will swing and people will wake up,' he says. 'When that happens we need to show that we stayed the course and remained true to our original charter.' The design team at Allbirds has been thinking about how to expand beyond its portfolio of materials, specifically into the world of recycled materials, which are now more sophisticated than ever. The big shoe brands have experimented with designs made from recycled plastic, such as Nike, with sneakers made using scraps from factory floors, and Adidas, with footwear made from ocean-bound plastic. The startup Rothy's makes shoes from recycled bottles. But Allbirds wanted to try something different and create shoes using recycled lyocell (sometimes referred to by its brand name, Tencel), which is derived from cellulose, the building block of natural materials like cotton and tree pulp. It made sense to partner with Circ, now a leader in textile-to-textile recycling. Circ, which launched in 2011, has developed the technology to break down polyester, cotton, or a blend of the two into its component materials. It then spins these materials into new polyester and lyocell fibers, which it sells to brands. Now it's investing in large factories to do the work at scale. It has a factory in Danville, Virginia, and recently announced a $500 million investment to build a new factory in France that will open in 2028. But to ensure these factories stay in business, Circ needs brands to buy its recycled fabric at scale. Circ has partnered with high-fashion labels like Christian Siriano and mass-market brands like Zara to create garments from recycled fibers. To keep growing its customer base, Circ is keen to illustrate that its materials can also be used to make shoes. According to Peter Majeranowski, Circ cofounder and CEO, fibers used in shoes need to be stronger than those used in garments. Circ transformed the lyocell into filaments, which are much longer than yarn and are therefore less likely to break. The company then used a weaving technique that ensures the fabric is thick but also has some stretch. 'Performance footwear has the highest technical standards,' he says. 'It was important for us to showcase our technology to illustrate that you can create a filament that is good enough to go into sneakers.' Allbirds also partnered with Blumaka, a company that collects foam waste that is discarded during the production of sneakers and transforms it into foam soles. Some companies transform old soles into furniture; since 1992, Nike has used old foam scraps to make Grind, a material that is used on everything from running tracks to playground flooring. But here, the old foam in shoes is used to make new foam soles, creating a more circular system. For Nyman, this is a way to not only demonstrate the brand's commitment to sustainability but also create an interesting design twist that he hopes spurs new interest in the brand. 'Sustainability doesn't have to be a zero-sum game, where you have to give up comfort, functionality, or fashion,' he says. 'We want to create a product that excites the customer aesthetically.' UK drops demand for backdoor into Apple encryption

The United Kingdom will no longer force Apple to provide backdoor access to secure user data protected by the company's iCloud encryption service, according to US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. 'Over the past few months, I've been working closely with our partners in the UK, alongside @POTUS and @VP, to ensure Americans' private data remains private and our Constitutional rights and civil liberties are protected,' Gabbard posted to X on Monday. 'As a result, the UK has agreed to drop its mandate for Apple to provide a 'back door' that would have enabled access to the protected encrypted data of American citizens and encroached on our civil liberties.' This announcement follows the UK issuing a secret order in January this year, demanding Apple provide it with backdoor access to encrypted files uploaded by users worldwide. In response, Apple pulled its Advanced Data Protection (ADP) encrypted iCloud storage offering from the UK and challenged the order, winning the right to publicly discuss the case in April. Earlier this year, US officials started examining whether the UK order had violated the bilateral CLOUD Act agreement, which bars the UK and US from issuing demands for each other's data. This pressure from the US sparked reports last month that Britain would walk back the demands it issued to Apple, with one unnamed UK official telling the Financial Times that the UK 'had its back against the wall,' and was looking for a way out. While it's unclear if the UK would negotiate new terms with Apple that avoid implicating the data of US citizens, an unnamed US official told The Financial Times that such negotiations would not be faithful to the new agreement. With the order now reportedly removed, it's unclear if Apple will restore access to its ADP service in the UK. We have reached out to Apple for comment.
