Wife's screaming wakes husband at 4 a.m. after she checks Powerball results
A man woke up in the middle of the night to his wife's yelling after she checked his Powerball ticket — and learned he had won big in Virginia.
Scott Skinner narrowly missed the $84 million jackpot in the May 10 drawing, but he matched all four white balls and the red Powerball to win $100,000, the Virginia Lottery announced May 29.
Skinner went to sleep without watching the drawing, but his wife decided to check the results herself, according to the Virginia Lottery. She woke him up at 4 a.m. with the good news.
'I looked at the ticket and said, 'You're right!'' he told lottery officials.
When Skinner bought his ticket at a Sheetz gas station in Winchester, he paid an extra dollar for Power Play, which doubled what would have been a $50,000 win, officials said.
He was one of four people in the country to win $100,000 in the drawing, Powerball results show.
He told lottery officials he selected his numbers for the drawing using 'important family dates.'
Winchester is in the Shenandoah Valley of northern Virginia, about a 70-mile drive northwest from Washington, D.C.
What to know about Powerball
To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.
The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.
Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.
Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.
Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

$207-million Powerball ticket sold in Arleta as Southern California streak continues
Southern California's latest lottery winner hit the jackpot in Arleta, where a Powerball ticket worth $207 million was sold at a 7-Eleven on Woodman Avenue. The lottery luck keeps coming for Southern California, which now boasts two of the four Powerball jackpot winners this year. The previous one was revealed in March, when a ticket worth $515 million was sold in Anaheim. The latest lucky numbers were announced Saturday, and the winning ticket matched all six: 1, 29, 37, 56, 68 and the Powerball number 13. The winner, who has not yet been revealed, can receive the full $207 million split across 30 payments over 29 years or take a lump sum payment of $92.5 million — before taxes, of course. The 7-Eleven gets a $1-million payout as well. In California, retailers that sell winning Powerball tickets get half a percent of the total payout, capped at $1 million. Since the jackpot was more than $200 million, the store got the full bonus. On Sunday, one of the store managers told KTLA it was the most exciting thing that happened in all the years he had worked there. It was, he said, "quite unbelievable." The SoCal winning streak dates back to 2022, when Edwin Castro set a Powerball record with a $2.04-billion jackpot. In 2023, a market near Skid Row sold a ticket worth $1.08 billion. A few months later, a store in Frazier Park sold a ticket worth $1.73 billion. Sign up for Essential California for news, features and recommendations from the L.A. Powerball jackpot hit; numbers, winners in Pennsylvania
MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — The $204.5 million Powerball jackpot was hit, but unfortunately, it wasn't in Pennsylvania — though several people won money in the Commonwealth. The huge $204.5 million jackpot was hit, once again, in California. This resets the Powerball jackpot to $20 for Monday's drawing (June 2). Winning Numbers: 01 29 37 56 68Powerball: 13 Power Play: 02 Double Play Winning Numbers: 34 44 61 64 68Powerball: 19 While in Pennsylvania, no one won over $100,000, one ticket sold is worth a cool $50,000. While it's unknown where it was sold, as the lottery only reports winners of $100,000 or more, the ticket did match four of the five numbers and the Powerball. If they had Power Play active (02), it would have been worth $100,000. According to the Pennsylvania Lottery, more than 35,000 also won between $4 and $500. According to Powerball officials, two tickets worth $2 million were sold in Florida and New Hampshire — matching all five regular balls with Power Play Monday's Powerball is reset to $20 million, Tuesday's Mega Millions (June 3) is worth an estimated $202 million.
