New skate park finally opens at Lota Park, Fishguard
The original opening date had to be delayed because of problems with tarmac at the site, including the fact that it had been walked onto the skate ramps by trespassers who breached the safety fencing.
(Image: The Lota Project) Now open, the skate park is getting a lot of use by children enjoying the sunshine and the summer holidays.
'Youngsters were queuing up to use the new skate park when it opened,' said Cllr Pat Davies who has been a stalwart of The Lota Project, a group dedicated to improving the park, since its inception.
'It's absolutely brilliant. All day long there's children there.'
(Image: The Lota Project) The new park includes a ledge, a quarter pipe and two fun box combinations which include a flat wedge and a grind rail.
It is the culmination of years of fundraising by The Lota Project, a group of dedicated volunteers who have raised funds to completely refurbish the park over the last decade.
The group has purchased new swings, a wheelchair inclusive roundabout, a new-style witch's hat and an arm rotator roundabout, a small basketball area and a teqball alongside a zipline, a large round swing, a gravity bowl, two new multi play installations, a new sea saw and springers.
(Image: The Lota Project) This has been made possible due to a mixture of fundraising, donations from groups, individuals, the town council and support from Pembrokeshire County Council and the Welsh Government.
Funding for the skatepark has come from a variety of sources including the Enhancing Pembrokeshire fund which is raised through the second home council tax premium.
The skate park was the last piece of refurbishment that The Lota Project wanted to complete. The four committee members will now retire but are happy to hand the fundraising over to anybody who has an interest in continuing to improve the park's facilities.
(Image: The Lota Project) 'This is the last thing we needed to do,' said Cllr Davies. 'We are glad to get it done in the school holidays so that the children aren't scootering or skateboarding around the town.
'Thank you to all those people and organisations locally that have helped fund the regeneration of the park.
'It's brilliant to see it getting so well used.'

"We need peace and quiet at the scene and unauthorised persons must stay away from the scene." "We will announce further information via press releases as soon as possible," they added. It is still unclear exactly how many people were hurt or what caused the derailment. Danish rail authority Banedanmark told local outlet BT there are 'many injured' in the incident, which has been described by a Fire and Rescue South Jutland response leader as 'a major disaster.' The Copenhagen-to-Sønderborg service, which was travelling via Fredericia, came off the tracks close to Denmark's border with Germany. Police are using dogs and drones in their investigation, while TV 2 reports that two medical helicopters are at the scene. Officers say they are 'massively present' in the area. Banedanmark have also sent an investigation team to determine the cause of the crash. Railway operator DSB said all journeys on the route have been halted and there will be no trains on the stretch for the rest of Friday or all of Saturday. Andreas Hald, press manager at Banedanmark, said: 'We have received reports that a train has derailed between Kliplev and Tinglev.' 'We are working on getting train buses to run on the route,' DSB added. Shocked residents described hearing and smelling the aftermath of the crash. Johnny Balling Nielsen, a resident near the scene, told BT: 'We heard a bang. 'Shortly after, we could smell a strange, metallic smell. We can hear all the sirens and what's going on.' CCYP summer expansion leads to drop in anti-social behaviour
Cwmbran Centre for Young People (CCYP) extended its opening hours over the summer, thanks to funding from Gwent Police's Safer Streets programme. This funding allowed the centre, which usually opens only in the evenings, to run open access activities three days a week. Outreach staff were also more present around Cwmbran town centre, encouraging young people to engage with the centre's sessions and facilities. Since July, when the initiative began, the CCYP has seen an increase of around 40 young people attending each week. The summer-long programme includes themed activities, team-building exercises, creative projects, and problem-solving tasks designed to inspire and challenge participants. Councillor Fiona Cross, Torfaen Council's executive member for communities, said: "This initiative is a fantastic example of how partnership working can create real opportunities for young people in our communities. "By offering safe, engaging, and supportive environments, we're not only reducing the risk of anti-social behaviour but also helping young people build confidence, develop new skills, and feel a stronger sense of belonging." The centre, open every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12pm to 4pm, has a gaming room, craft room, cookery kitchen, and an activity room with a pool table, foosball, and ping-pong. Laura Ellis, CCYP centre manager, said: "We're proud to provide young people with a safe, inclusive space where they can express themselves, connect with others, and feel supported. "Thanks to additional funding, attendance at CCYP has grown steadily. "It's a clear sign of the value young people place on the centre and the positive difference it's making in their lives." The initiative is being delivered in partnership with Torfaen Council's Community Safety team and supported by Animals Interactive, Gwent Police, The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC), Cwmbran Community Council, and Cwmbran Town Centre Management. The centre also sees Torfaen sports, health, and fitness attend every Friday from 12pm to 1.30pm to deliver fitness sessions. For more information about the centre, follow @CCYP on Facebook or call the centre on 01633 875851.
