Wake school board member, a Trump supporter, says she will run for NC Senate in 2026
Wake County school board member Cheryl Caulfield announced Friday that she will run for a seat in the North Carolina Senate.
Caulfield, a Republican, said she'll seek the District 18 Senate seat that includes part of Wake and all of Granville County. Republicans control the Senate, but Wake County is represented entirely by Democrats in the chamber.
In her announcement, Caulfield talked about promoting a conservative agenda that includes improving school safety, securing the border and lowering taxes.
'I am running for Senate to bring meaningful change in our education system by improving academic performance, providing stronger support for our teachers, and raising the standards for school safety,' Caulfield said in a news release. 'There is no other profession where violence in the workplace is accepted, and schools should be no different.
'Being on the school board has given me unique insight into why things aren't getting accomplished in some school districts, and it's going to take legislative solutions to make education more classroom focused.'
The District 18 seat is now held by Sen. Terence Everitt, a Democrat who was elected in 2024. Before then, he had served in the state House since being elected in 2018.
Everitt defeated Republican Ashlee Adams by just 128 votes in November. Everitt's win wasn't certified by the State Board of Elections until January.
Everitt has not publicly announced if he'll run for reelection. He did not immediately return email and voicemail messages Friday from The News & Observer.
Caulfield was elected in 2022 to the District 1 school board seat that includes Wake Forest, much of eastern Wake and part of North Raleigh. Wake is North Carolina's largest school district.
In her campaign announcement, Caulfield talked about how she worked with county leaders to keep vape shops away from schools. She also cited being part of a 'statewide conservative school board coalition' that lobbies for issues such as raising teacher pay.
Caulfield has spoken at events for groups such as the N.C. Values Coalition to urge schools to remove books she says are too sexually explicit for students. She's publicly clashed with the Democratic majority on the Wake school board on issues such as her support for President Donald Trump's call to eliminate 'discriminatory gender ideology' in schools.
If elected to the General Assembly, Caulfield said she'd work 'to secure our borders to combat human trafficking and to stop the fentanyl crisis.'
Caulfield also said she's committed to lowering tax burdens on businesses and supports state Rep. Erin Paré's bill to eliminate taxes on tips, overtime and bonus pay. Paré is one of two Republicans representing Wake in the House.
Some Wake school board members have been successful in winning higher office. Last year, Monika Johnson-Hostler resigned from the school board after being elected to the state House.
The candidate filing period opens Dec. 1. If Caulfield wins the March 2026 GOP primary, she'd go on to the fall general election.
Caulfield said she plans to serve the remainder of her four-year term on the school board, which expires December 2026.

One of its focus areas is to 'mitigate major public health events related to emerging or reemerging infectious diseases or biological weapons attacks.' The MAHA Institute, a think tank supporting Kennedy's 'Make America Healthy Again' agenda, posted on X earlier that Noem, Paul, and Kennedy had toured the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases biosecurity lab at Fort Detrick on Monday. The offices of Noem, Paul and Kennedy did not immediately return requests for comment. Kennedy's department ordered an indefinite work stoppage at the lab in April. A spokesperson for NIH told WIRED at the time that the safety stand-down 'follows identification and documentation of personnel issues involving contract staff that compromised the facility's safety culture.' An unnamed HHS official told Fox News the incident stemmed from a 'lover's spat' between researchers at the facility, which allegedly resulted in one of the people poking holes in the other's personal protective equipment. Kennedy told a Senate committee in May the FBI was investigating it as a potentially 'deliberate criminal act' because the pathogens the individuals were handling were highly dangerous. He said he intended to visit the facility with Noem. Democrats last week pressed Kennedy's office for more answers on the research pause, noting that scientists at the Integrated Research Facility 'study some of the most dangerous pathogens and viruses to prevent, address, and eradicate high-consequence and deadly diseases,' and that safety measures there 'are of the utmost importance for our constituents in the surrounding communities.' The letter also asked for a timeline on when work at the labs would resume.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Says Immigrants Should Act Like Guests
Arnold Schwarzenegger has had his say on the ongoing ICE deportation crisis in Los Angeles, with people taking to the streets of LA earlier this month to campaign against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) department's raids of numerous workplaces in the area while searching for alleged immigration violations. Hundreds of people have been detained in the raids, with LA Mayor Karen Bass previously telling reporters: 'ICE initiated enforcement actions on several workplaces. That created a sense of chaos, outrage, fear, and terror because people are very worried as to what happened to their families.'In addition, President Donald Trump ordered military force to be used against protestors, which has led to attendees being tear-gassed and arrested. In case you didn't know, Arnold served as Governor of California from 2003 to 2011 as a Republican, and during an appearance on The View on Tuesday, he was asked how he would handle the situation if he were still in power. Arnie started by saying that 'the most important thing' is to work with 'everybody,' adding: 'You have to work together with local government, the state government, and the federal government. You have to work together rather than fighting each other." He went on to say that 'immigration reform' is key going forward, explaining: 'For decades now, this country has needed immigration reform, which means we recognize the fact there's people in the south of America that want to come north to work, and we therefore should supply them with enough visas to come because we need those workers.' "Then we'd know who is here, we'd be able to get rid of the criminal elements that are here, all this stuff so we wouldn't be in the mess we're in right now,' Arnie went on.'If you want to make this country better and if you want to improve this country and improve the situation of people's lives and bring the prices down, you will go and serve the people of America," Arnold concluded. "You're a public servant, that's what you're supposed to do, and that's what I would do if I was governor." Panelist Joy Behar then asked Arnold if he had a 'visceral reaction' to videos of what ICE is doing to immigrants, considering he is an immigrant himself. If you need reminding, Arnold was born in Austria in 1947, and moved to California to fulfill his bodybuilding dream in 1968, at age 21, with the star admitting that he spoke little English when he first emigrated. 'I'm so proud and happy to [have been] embraced by the American people like that,' Arnold said in response to Joy's question. 'Imagine, I came over here at the age of 21 with absolutely nothing, and then to create a career like that? I mean, in no other country in the world could you do that.' Arnie then referenced his hugely successful bodybuilding and acting careers, as well as his political venture, before adding: 'All of this is because of America, and this is why I'm so happy to see firsthand that this is the greatest country in the world.''I'm such a proud American and a proud immigrant,' he went on. 'The key thing is, at the same time, you gotta do things legal.' "Those people that are doing illegal things in America and that are foreigners, they are not smart, because when you come to America, you're a guest, and you have to behave like a guest," Arnold explained. "When I go to someone's house and I'm a guest, then I'll do everything I can to keep things clean and to make my bed and do everything that's the right thing to do rather than committing a crime or being abusive or something like that,' he said. 'That doesn't really work in this country. Arnold went on to say that immigrants come to America "for the great opportunities America has in education, jobs, creating a family," adding that they therefore have a responsibility to 'give something back.'Panelist Whoopi Goldberg attempted to push back on Arnie's comments, telling him: '90 per cent of the people who come here are trying to do the right thing, and a lot of what's happening right now is people are getting snatched — who shouldn't be snatched — out of the country.'Sunny Hostin also refuted what he'd said, pointing out that "immigrants are much less likely to commit crimes in this country than American-born citizens."
