Harry Potter's new Snape had a huge Netflix role you probably missed
Paapa Essiedu has been cast as Severus Snape in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series, but viewers may recognise him from a previous Netflix role
The highly anticipated HBO series based on the magical world of Harry Potter has now officially announced its lead cast.
After conducting auditions for over 30,000 actors, the coveted roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron have been assigned to Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout, respectively.
Before this announcement on May 27, the showrunners had already selected an actor to fill the role of the much-loved character Severus Snape. Renowned stage and screen actor Paapa Essiedu is set to take on the role made famous by the late Alan Rickman.
Some may know Essiedu from his recent appearance on the popular Netflix series Black Mirror. In Season 6's episode titled 'Demon 79', Essiedu portrayed the character Gaap, a flashy and satanic figure.
In this episode, introverted sales assistant Nida Huq (played by Anjana Vasan) accidentally unleashes a demon that is only visible to her. She is told by Gaap that she must perform three human sacrifices within three days to prevent the apocalypse.
Despite straying from Black Mirror's usual themes surrounding technology and instead venturing into the supernatural realm, 'Demon 79' managed to garner significant acclaim from fans and critics alike, reports Surrey Live.
Essiedu and Vasan received positive reviews on their joint performance, with one online critic writing, "The chemistry between Anjana Vasan and Paapa Essiedu is spot on."
Additionally, casual viewers shared glowing reviews of the episode on platforms like IMDb. One viewer was so impressed with the episode that they hailed it as the standout of the sixth season, remarking: "Almost as if it was a short film, by the end of this episode I was completely captivated by the two main characters. I was on the edge of my seat for most of it!"
Their praise didn't stop there as they elaborated: "I honestly didn't really think much of it being different to the rest of Black Mirror (lacking the techy theme) as a few of the other episodes in the new season were similarly lacking and some really not as entertaining. This was the best episode of the season for me!"

One local said: 'It's bad enough that they're galloping up and down the high street, but surely they don't have to go into takeaways with their owners.' Two years ago drinkers watched in bewilderment as a pony was trotted through the Crown and Cushion pub in the town. The pony's visit to the bar, thought to be to show it off for sale, was captured on CCTV. Meanwhile Scarlett Tipton, 17, from Stockport, Greater Manchester, was seen putting her pony Duchess through her paces on the streets of the town. She said: 'I love coming to Appleby, I'm here every year with my family. Duchess is loving the flashing lane this year, it's been great fun. I just wish the rain would stop.' MailOnline also spoke to fortune teller Melvina Smith on Thursday, who has been attending Appleby for 30 years. She said: 'The fair has changed so much over the years. It used to be a calm place where you could come to relax. A special police task force was also dealing with reports of burglary, criminal damage, racist abuse, knife crime. Cumbria Police said last Sunday that almost 30 arrests had been made in the Eden and South Lakes area as part of their pre-fair policing operation. Meanwhile, local sporting venue, Kirkby Lonsdale Cricket club, also saw its wooden pavilion smashed up. Cumbria Police said that three 10-year-old boys were arrested over the attack as part of the wider Appleby Fair policing operation. There were also problems at Woodclose Park caravan site where police investigated reports of criminal damage and the racial abuse of a security guard. It was reported that a group of traveller children had been abusive to staff and when asked to leave the park's reception set off fire extinguishers. In another earlier incident, police detained and handcuffed two traveller children after a penknife was produced in front of a shocked local on a riverside path. One of the biggest concerns for locals is also the welfare of the thousands of horses driven to Appleby to be traded in the streets. Last year two horses died at Appleby with both deaths being put down to exhaustion and overworking. The RSPCA intervened in 438 cases in total. Local campaigners say stricter regulations need to be placed on the event with spot checks on animal passports. The Appleby Fair Communities Group said: 'There are no checks on horse passports, we know horses are traded but the authorities never spot check passports. We know horses are moved, but with no check on passports ever. '

The series, titled 'I Am Georgina', is reported to have made model Rodriguez, 31, $10million (£7.3m) per season, resulting in a whopping $30m (£21.9m) payday. Rodriguez also acted as an executive producer for the documentary, which first aired on the streaming giant in January 2022 and offered a unique glimpse into her life. Episodes took viewers behind the scenes with Rodriguez for both her working and personal life, including her long-term relationship with superstar Ronaldo. The third season, released in September 2024, documented the family's journey as they adapted to life in Saudi Arabia after Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr.
