College baseball notebook: SEC leader Texas latest to get knocked off during Gators' late-season run

Florida's late-season surge keeps getting better.
The Gators, who started 1-11 in SEC play, enter the final week of the regular season with wins in 12 of their last 15 conference games. They took two of three at Texas over the weekend for their first series win over a No. 1-ranked team since 2016.
Florida (35-18, 13-14 SEC) has won five straight series, including against a top-five Arkansas last month, and has all but locked up a 17th straight NCAA Tournament bid. Before heading to Austin, the Gators were projected to be a No. 3 regional seed by D1Baseball.com. They were No. 13 in the RPI Monday and close at home against Alabama.
Their run is reminiscent of last year, when they went into regionals one game over .500 and won five straight elimination games to reach the final four of the College World Series.
Freshman left-hander Aidan King pitched seven shutout innings against the Longhorns on Sunday, allowing two hits and striking out nine, and Brody Donay hit his 14th homer in a 4-1 win. King has allowed one earned run over 14 1/3 innings across his last three starts.
'I don't remember a freshman pitching on the road like this and pitching as well as he did," Gators coach Kevin O'Sullivan said, 'and if it has happened, it hasn't happened in a long time.'
The Gators got three hits and three RBIs from Hayden Yost in their 8-2 win Friday. Texas won the second game 5-2 Saturday, scoring all of its runs in the sixth inning. In the polls
LSU (40-12) is the No. 1 team in the D1Baseball.com and Baseball America rankings. The Tigers won two of three at home against Arkansas and three of their last four SEC series.
D1Baseball ranks Florida State and Texas behind the LSU. The Seminoles (36-11) won four of five last week, including two of three against California, and is a half-game up on North Carolina State in the ACC. Texas (40-10), which started 38-5, has lost five of its last seven games but still holds a two-game lead over Arkansas in the SEC.

Virginia (30-16) has won 10 of its last 11 following a three-game sweep of Miami, which had arrived in Charlottesville off five straight ACC series wins.

But over the weekend, Texas turned it up on Berymon and he picked the Longhorns, adding a muscled-up, tough interior defensive lineman to the class. Missouri beat out Nebraska, North Carolina and others for the Coconut Creek (Fla.) Monarch standout. He gives off vibes of Theo Wease Jr. during his time in Columbia – a big target who will catch a lot of passes; not a burner but explodes by defenders. Brady is a weapon and another big win for coach Eli Drinkwitz and staff. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH MISSOURI FANS AT Could USC's loss be Texas' gain? Brown and the Trojans parted ways when the four-star receiver from Waxahachie, Texas, wanted to take visits. The Longhorns, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Illinois, Utah, Colorado, SMU and Baylor then emerged as the serious contenders. It really came down to Texas and Notre Dame for Brown and he picked the Longhorns over the weekend, giving an already loaded receiver room another big weapon. How many will USC take this recruiting class? The No. 1 class in the country has 28 commitments after adding Dyer over the weekend as the four-star DB from Duluth, Ga., joins an absolutely loaded defensive back haul that includes five-star Elbert Hill and four-star Brandon Lockhart among many others. Word started leaking out over the weekend that USC could land Dyer, an early South Carolina commit who said Georgia was the team to beat, and by Sunday it was done. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH USC FANS AT In the closing weeks before his weekend commitment, Harris had South Carolina and NC State as the two front-runners after things with Ohio State slowed. The high four-star defensive end from Matthews (N.C.) Weddington made it clear throughout his recruitment that he wanted to play with his twin brother, Andrew, so that could have shaped his recruitment even more. The Gamecocks have only eight commitments but six are four-stars so there is a lot more quality than quantity right now. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH SOUTH CAROLINA FANS AT Penn State was an option for the Harris Bros., and Auburn and NC State official visits were scheduled. But South Carolina was a favorite of both throughout their recruitment as it ended with commitments over the weekend. When things slowed down with Ohio State in recent weeks, the Gamecocks jumped up even further. Since the brothers wanted to play together, South Carolina became a great option. This was a surprise commitment over the weekend because the four-star running back from Lancaster, Texas, was tagged to a program much closer to home. Lee had taken a visit to TCU but SMU was really the front-runner in his recruitment. He is from the South Dallas area, he was a main priority for the Mustangs and Lee made it no secret that he was highly interested in the program. Vanderbilt landed a weekend pledge but will have to fight off SMU and others down the stretch. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH VANDERBILT FANS AT After working out at Ole Miss in recent days and spending a lot of time with position coach Randall Joyner, the Rebels offered the 2027 four-star defensive tackle from Memphis (Tenn.) Memphis Academy and he made it no secret they were a front-runner. Pittman said Ole Miss was 'for sure up there' and he didn't waste a lot of time as he was committed to the Rebels just days later. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH OLE MISS FANS AT UCLA pulled off a major recruiting victory over the weekend when the four-star offensive lineman from Vero Beach, Fla., picked the Bruins over Alabama, Illinois, Ohio State, South Carolina and Tennessee. What really pushed UCLA to the front was his visit to Westwood in recent weeks that completely blew him away. He's now become a big-time recruiter for this UCLA class on social media but the in-state schools and programs across the Southeast won't give up. CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported Wednesday that Brad Brownell's Tigers will take on coach Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa in the 2025 ACC/SEC Challenge. An official date and start time were not announced. The matchup will be a rematch of teams who met twice during the 2023-24 season, including in the West Region final of NCAA Tournament in Los Angeles on March 30, 2024. After defeating New Mexico, No. 3 seed Baylor and No. 2 seed Arizona in the tournament, the Tigers reached the Elite Eight for only the second time in program history, and the first since 1980. Clemson fell to Alabama, 89-82, at Arena (Staples Center), denying the Tigers their first trip to a Final Four. Prior to that, Clemson and Alabama met four months earlier on Nov. 28 in Tuscaloosa, an 85-77 Tigers victory in the 2023 ACC/SEC Challenge. Last year, Clemson smothered No. 4 Kentucky in the ACC/SEC Challenge for a 70-66 win at Littlejohn Coliseum on Dec. 3 behind 11 points and 20 rebounds from Ian Schieffelin. Guard Jaeden Zackery led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points, and fans stormed the court after the victory. Clemson finished 27-7 overall last season and 18-2 in ACC play and was a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers fell to McNeese State, 69-67, in a first-round upset in Providence, Rhode Island. Clemson was ranked No. 23 in the final USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Alabama went 28-9 overall and reached the Elite Eight before falling to Duke in the East Region final in Newark. The Crimson Tide were ranked No. 6 in the final Coaches Poll. The SEC reveals TV windows for Auburn football Mark your calendars! The SEC has officially revealed the TV windows for every Auburn game The football season is almost here, and it is time to begin planning for roadtrips to the Plains and beyond to watch the Auburn Tigers this fall. Weeks after major networks revealed the start times for Auburn's first three games of the season, the SEC has now released the television windows for the remaining nine games on Auburn's schedule to better prepare fans for the season. Auburn's start times are broken down into four categories: early (11 a.m. – noon CT), afternoon (2:30 – 3:30 p.m. CT), night (5 – 7 p.m. CT), and flex (2:30 – 3:30 p.m. CT or 5-7 p.m. CT). Several notable windows are its game with Georgia at home (night), Arkansas on the road (early), and the Iron Bowl against Alabama (flex). Auburn's SEC opener at Oklahoma gets the flex treatment on Sept. 20, with the following week at Texas A&M beginning in the afternoon window at Kyle Field. The Tigers' home opener at Georgia will be under the lights at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with two of their next three games against Missouri and Kentucky being labeled as "flex." The game in-between the Missouri Tigers and Kentucky Wildcats at Arkansas will be an early kick. The next two games, against Vanderbilt in Nashville, and Mercer at home, will kick in the afternoon. Auburn vs. Vanderbilt will begin in the afternoon time frame while the game against Mercer will begin at 1 p.m. CT and will air on SEC Network. Finally, the Iron Bowl at Jordan-Hare Stadium is flexed. However, as the trend has shown recently, fans can expect the game to kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT. The time and date for Auburn's first three games were revealed last month. Auburn will begin the season in Waco, Texas on Friday, Aug. 29 against the Baylor Bears at 7 p.m. CT on FOX. The next two games, against Ball State and South Alabama, respectively, will kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT and 11:45 a.m. CT.
