Kolkata: The Bidhannagar South Police arrested three individuals in connection with a daring robbery worth around Rs 50 lakh, committed at an office located in GC Block in the early hours of last Thursday. The accused were apprehended on Friday night after three separate raids around Tangra. "We have arrested the mastermind, Zumrati Molla, and his two associates, Rahim Ali and Rinku Sheikh. We have identified four other suspects linked to this gang, and raids are ongoing to capture them," said an investigating officer from Bidhannagar City Police. The cops have so far not arrested anyone who might have any link with the office thus ruling out the "insider" angle.
The accused are in police custody, with officers suggesting they might soon recover a significant portion of the looted cash after questioning them. According to investigators, the same gang struck at a doctor's residence in HB Block (house number 181) on January 12 earlier this year. The gang targeted the doctor's residence when he was not in the city, making off with gold ornaments worth lakhs. "During the investigation of that case, a few members of this gang were arrested by us. However, these criminals managed to get bail in February and resumed their crimes," said the officer.

Once out of jail, the gang reportedly committed burglaries and robberies in the Dum Dum, North Bidhannagar, and Sonapur areas. "The accused hail from the Tangra and Tiljala areas. They roam the city on their bikes and strike at any residence they think is unoccupied for the night," said a sleuth. The police studied multiple CCTV footage, spoke to officers who had stopped and chased them in the early hours of Thursday (after they committed the robbery), and used local sources to track them down.

Police said that multiple leads, including CCTV footage and descriptions from officers who had chased them, led to the raids at three different places around Tangra, resulting in the arrests of Zumrati Molla, Rahim Ali, and Rinku Sheikh. In the early hours of Thursday, the accused broke open the lock of a ground-floor office in a two-storey home and stole cash and other items worth close to Rs 50 lakh. The house belongs to an NRI elderly woman who rented out the ground floor to a private firm that runs a dealership of eggs from the building.
Following the burglary, while the burglars were fleeing on two motorbikes without number plates, a police patrol team spotted and chased them. However, they brandished a firearm and escaped through alleys and lanes as the officers failed to capture them after a hot pursuit. The incident occurred around 2 am at GC 184 in Salt Lake, where the burglars broke open the locks at the separate exit for the office and entered the premises. Sanitary inspector, junior engineer caught red-handed in separate cases of bribery
Two public servants were arrested by the state and central agencies for accepting bribes in the city on Thursday. In the first case, the state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested a sanitary inspector with the H/East Ward of the BMC after he was allegedly caught red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 2 lakh. The accused, identified as Sarabjit Bajwa, along with another BMC official from the H/East Ward, had sought a bribe of Rs 3 lakh, as per the complainant. An ACB official said the complainant has a consultancy firm where he arranged for licenses, permits and other permissions needed by businessmen from various government departments. In this case, a restaurant owner had approached him to get a health license for his establishment. The complainant then went to the H/East Ward to get the necessary process started. As per the complainant, there he met the sanitary inspector Sarabjit Singh Bajwa who asked him to pay a bribe of Rs 2 lakh and upload some documents online. Accordingly, the complainant said he paid Rs 2 lakh and completed the process following which the license was issued. The complainant added that some time later, another BMC employee, Pramod Patil, came to the establishment and said the license that had been obtained was incorrect. As per the complaint, Patil then asked him to come to the ward office, the ACB said. The complainant added that when he visited the H/East ward office, he met Patil and Bajwa. Patil allegedly told him that he would have to pay a bribe of Rs 5 lakh. 'The duo said that since he had already paid Rs 2 lakh, he would have to pay another Rs lakh,' an official said. The complainant, who did not want to make any further payments, then approached the ACB on May 14 and gave a complaint. Based on the ACB probe, it was established that the accused Bajwa had demanded Rs 3 lakh bribe and had agreed to accept Rs 2.5 lakh. Accordingly, the ACB team asked the complainant to meet Bajwa with the money on Thursday and as he was accepting Rs 2 lakh, the ACB officials nabbed him red-handed and placed him under arrest. An official said they will be interrogating him to find out the role of the other public servants allegedly involved in asking for bribes. In the second case, the CBI on Thursday arrested Dinesh Chandra Pandey, a junior engineer with Naval Officers Family Residential Area (NOFRA) in Navy Nagar, Mumbai, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 4.5 lakh. The accused asked the complainant who had secured the contract of special repair work at a building in Navy Nagar to pay the bribe if he wanted his bills of Rs 40 lakh to be cleared. The accused was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe and was taken into custody by the CBI. Special public prosecutor Sandeep Singh said the accused was produced before the court and remanded to CBI custody till June 9.

Auto driver held for ‘murdering sex worker over unpaid loan'
An autorickshaw driver allegedly murdered a 40-year-old sex worker for not returning the money she had taken as a loan from him. Police have arrested the autorickshaw driver identified as Nitin Chandrakant Pandit (51), a resident of Dhayari. A first information report (FIR) was lodged against him at Nanded City Police Station on Thursday. Police said the victim woman was also a resident of Dhayari area and she knew the accused as he often dropped her off at the red light area in Budhwar Peth in his autorickshaw. The woman had allegedly taken about a Rs 40,000 loan from him. However, she allegedly did not pay the money back. When he allegedly demanded his money from the woman, she avoided him, which led to a financial dispute between them. Police said around 4 pm on June 4, the accused went to her house in Dhayari area and asked her to return his money. As the quarrel escalated, he allegedly strangled her with a piece of cloth. After allegedly committing the murder, he surrendered himself at Nanded City Police Station. Police inspector Gurudatta More, the investigation officer of this case said, the accused autorickshaw driver was arrested under section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on Thursday. He was produced before a court in Pune on Friday. The court remanded him to police custody till June 9 for further investigation.

Court enhances compensation in domestic violence case to Rs 1 cr from Rs 5 lakh
A sessions court has enhanced the compensation granted to a woman subjected to domestic violence from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 1 crore, observing the 'sound financial status' of her husband and in-laws, who it said are 'crorepatis'. In 2020, the Andheri magistrate court had directed that the woman be paid Rs 5 lakh as compensation and a monthly maintenance of Rs 1 lakh. While deciding an appeal against this order, the Dindoshi sessions court in a recent order, enhanced the maintenance to Rs 1.5 lakh as well, along with the increased compensation. The couple had married in 1997. In her complaint, the woman had said that she was subjected to domestic violence from 1998, including physical violence by her husband. Over many years, the violence continued, the complainant had alleged, even as she gave birth to a girl. The magistrate court had directed that she be given maintenance and compensation observing that there was proof of domestic violence. In the appeal, she had sought a total amount of Rs 12 crore, including Rs 5 crore for the future expenses of her daughter. Her husband and in-laws denied the allegations of domestic violence and also claimed that they had huge outstanding financial liabilities, claiming their inability to provide for a large amount of compensation. The court relied on the evidence, including that the family had bought a flat in 2012 in Kharghar for more than Rs 1 crore and said that no proof was given that their family-owned company had liabilities. '…the fact that the respondent no.1 (husband) and his parents had the capacity to spend more than Rs 1 crore for purchasing land as also a flat in Kharghar in the year 2012 is a clear reflection of their sound financial status as also the fact of they belonging to the class commonly known as 'crorepatis'. It is therefore, not difficult to imagine their standard of living at all times. This being so and the complainant having been subjected to domestic violence at the hands of the respondent no.1, she as also her daughter will be entitled to enjoy the same standard of living as that of the respondents,' the court said in its order passed last month, adding that nothing was shown by the husband to prove that his financial condition had deteriorated since 2012. The court also said that the woman and her daughter cannot be dispossessed from their shared home and cannot be subjected to domestic violence.
