Canadian Open: Coco Gauff Battles Past Danielle Collins To Move Into Third Round
American tennis star Coco Gauff moved into the third round of the WTA Canadian Open with her win over Danielle Collins on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old Gauff posted a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7/2) win over compatriot Collins in a fixture that lasted nearly three hours. French Open holder, Gauff, is slated to take on Veronika Kudermetova in the third round of the tune-up event to the US Open.
'It was a frustrating match for me just because I felt like I was practicing well and then I don't think I transferred it," Gauff said following her triumph over Collins in a grueling fixture.
'But hopefully I got my bad match of the tournament out of the way and I can come back stronger in the next round," she added.
'It was a tough battle out there," Gauff said.
'Making serves in the court was the toughest challenge. Maybe if I cut that in half it could be a quicker match for me. I thought I was playing well, except for that part of my game," she continued.
'For me to break her as many times as I did, there are some positives to take from today," Gauff added.
Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito achieved a major upset by defeating No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) in a match lasting 2 hours and 27 minutes. World No. 110 Ito was down by a set and 4-1, and she saved one match point while trailing 5-4 in the second set. Ito's next opponent in the third round will be Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
Earlier, Bianca Andreescu withdrew from her second-round match at her home WTA 1000 event due to a left ankle injury. As a result, No. 4 seed Mirra Andreeva advances to the third round via walkover.

'Jassi Bhai, Mai 5 Wicket Leke Kisko Hug Karu?': Siraj's Emotional Goodbye To Bumrah
Last Updated: Mohammed Siraj has revealed asking Jasprit Bumrah to stay back despite being released from the squad, telling him that he'd want to hug the senior pacer after picking a fifer. Mohammed Siraj has dropped another proof of his eternal love and admiration for senior pace bowling partner Jasprit Bumrah. Siraj revealed that when Bumrah was leaving the squad in the lead-up to the game, the Hyderabadi asked him to stop, saying who he would hug after a five-wicket haul if not his Jassi bhai. Bumrah, having been rested from the final Test of the series, was released from the squad on July 31. Siraj didn't take a fifer in the first innings but picked up a brilliant four-wicket haul, helping India bowl England out for 247 and keep their first lead to a gettable 23 runs. 'Jassi bhai ko ye bola tha, bhaiya aap ja kyu rahe ho? Mai 5 wicket leke aake kisko hug karu? Toh unhone bola mai hu idhar hi, tu bas 5 wicket lele. (I asked Jassi, brother, why are you going? Who'll I come to hug when I take a five-wicket haul? He just said, 'I am here, you go and take five wickets')" Siraj revealed in a video on the after the day's play. In the same video, Prasidh Krishna, who also took four wickets in the innings to step up in Bumrah's absence, spoke about the fast-bowling group. 'Booms has been a great, great part of this. I think it's really important for us to enjoy each other. When you are on the field, you are speaking to each other and have that trust. That trust is only going to make the team better," Prasidh said. The BCCI's medical team had decided that it was only safe for Bumrah to play three Tests in the series to maintain his long-term fitness. He featured in the first, third, and fourth games. 'I and Siraj, we have been playing a lot for five years now. I played with him a lot in the IPL as well. We sit together a lot, spend a lot of time together. Same with Akash Deep. I think the fast-bowling unit is looking pretty good," Prasidh added. The visitors scored 75/2 in reply, taking a 52-run lead to Stumps. Any target of over 250 would be their aim, though it won't be easy on the quick green pitch at the Oval. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Canadian Open 2025: Sevastova stuns two-time defending champion Pegula; Swiatek beats Lys
Anastasija Sevastova stunned two-time defending champion Jessica Pegula 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Friday to book a fourth-round clash with Naomi Osaka at the WTA Canadian Open. Sevastova, a former world No. 11 now ranked 386th, snapped fourth-ranked Pegula's 11-match WTA Canada win streak, the longest since Serena Williams reeled off 14 consecutive wins in 2011, 2013 and 2014. She will try to extend her Montreal run in a round of 16 meeting with Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion from Japan who ousted another Latvian, 22nd seed Jelena Ostapenko, 6-2, 6-4. 'Somehow, I was down 2-0 in the second set and started to play better and better,' Sevastova said. 'Third set I played really good. Just trying to stay on the court as long as possible,' added Sevastova, who has dealt with injury since returning from maternity leave in February 2024. In the night session, second-seeded Iga Swiatek -- playing her first tournament since winning Wimbledon -- raced into the fourth round with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Germany's Eva Lys. Swiatek next faces Denmark's Clara Tauson, who beat Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-3, 6-0. But she has struggled in recent months, dropping her openers at Wimbledon and at Washington last week. The American broke to open the match and again at love to claim the first set. But she couldn't maintain an early break in the second, with Sevastova breaking for a 5-4 lead and denying Pegula on three break chances before holding in the final game to force a third set in which she seized a 4-1 lead on the way to victory. Meanwhile, Osaka, twice a winner at both the US and Australian Opens, is one match away from her first quarterfinal run at either a Grand Slam or WTA 1000 event since she returned from maternity leave at the start of 2024. Now ranked 49th, Osaka broke on a double fault to capture the first set in 30 minutes and raced to a 3-1 lead in the second. They exchanged breaks before Osaka served for the match with a 5-3 lead, but Ostapenko saved a match point on a forehand crosscourt winner and broke when Osaka sent a forehand beyond the baseline. The Japanese star responded by breaking Ostapenko at love in the final game. 'I went in there knowing she's a great player and if I give her a chance she's going to hit a winner on me, so I just tried to keep my pace and stay as solid as I could,' Osaka said. Australian Open champion Madison Keys, seeded sixth, beat fellow American Caty McNally 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and will next meet Karolina Muchova, a 6-7 (2/7), 6-2, 6-3 winner over Belinda Bencic. Fifth-seeded American Amanda Anisimova, regrouping this week after a crushing 6-0, 6-0 loss to Swiatek in the Wimbledon final, swept past Britain's Emma Raducanu 6-2, 6-1. She lined up a meeting with Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who beat Russian Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-1.

Taylor Fritz Quashes Canadian Hopes, Advances To ATP Toronto Masters Round Four
Last Updated: Fritz defeated Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 6-2 to make progress at the ATP Toronto Masters. Ben Shelton got the better of Brandon Nakashima, while Rublev and Tiafoe also advanced. Taylor Fritz dashed Canadian hopes at the ATP Toronto Masters on Friday by decisively defeating Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 6-2, thus advancing to the fourth round. The American second seed took just 77 minutes to overcome the 37th-ranked local player and secure a clash with Jiri Lehecka, who triumphed 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 over France's Arthur Fils. Fritz aims to reach at least the quarter-finals in this tournament, as it remains the only Masters event where he hasn't reached that stage. He broke Diallo's serve once in the opening set and maintained control thereafter. 'It was important not to let him get into the match and get the crowd fired up," Fritz said. 'I knew the momentum could shift at any time. I'm super happy with it, considering how I felt on the court two nights ago in my first match. I felt way more comfortable, confident, just hitting the ball, being aggressive, just striking it. I did well to be up an early break in the sets. I did well to just hold. Played really solid from the baseline as well. I backed it up well from the ground, and just did a good job of not letting him back in the sets." In another match, Brandon Nakashima won his first set against American Ben Shelton before the fourth-seeded Shelton rallied to clinch a 6-7 (8/10), 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) victory. Shelton had trailed by a break in the deciding set, and Nakashima saved four match points before Shelton sealed the win with his 19th ace. Shelton finished with 46 winners, improving to 5-0 against Nakashima, and will now compete for a quarter-final spot against Flavio Cobolli, who overcame Fabian Marozsan 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. 'I've got to find my fire from somewhere," Shelton said of the late-night crowd support in Canada. 'I live off of that. Night matches are never easy, the temperature cools down and conditions are different. I showed a lot of perseverance. It's difficult being down against a big server. To come from behind takes a bit of luck." Seeds Progress The seeded duo of Andrey Rublev and Frances Tiafoe faced tough three-set matches before progressing to the fourth round. Sixth seed Rublev, last year's runner-up in Canada to Alexei Popyrin, advanced 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 as Lorenzo Sonego double-faulted on match point. Tiafoe, the number seven seed, admitted to having a challenging day but secured his hard-fought win against Australian Aleksandar Vukic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. 'The ball was flying a lot, it was really ugly, but I'm happy to get through it," Tiafoe said. 'It doesn't matter how you win. You just have to compete." Tiafoe will next face another Australian, Alex de Minaur, who progressed when compatriot Christopher O'Connell withdrew due to injury. Rublev is set to play against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who previously defeated him on clay in Barcelona this season. Davidovich Fokina defeated Jakob Mensik 6-2, 6-4. 'I'm really happy, it's my first time in the round of 16 here in Toronto," Rublev said, noting that he had to adjust his serve in windy conditions to stage his comeback. 'I played more aggressively in the second set and made fewer mistakes. I was doing more with my serve. I had to slow it wide in the wind." view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
