UFC champion Tom Aspinall is in a 'tough spot' vs. Ciryl Gane, says Din Thomas

Yahoo4 days ago
Din Thomas thinks there's a massive amount of pressure on UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall.
Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) waited for over a year for his title-unification bout with Jon Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC) to materialize, but Jones eventually retired and relinquished the championship. As a result, Aspinall was promoted as undisputed champion and will meet Ciryl Gane in the UFC 321 headliner Oct. 25 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
Thomas says Aspinall has to top Jones' performance against Gane (13-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC), where he needed just over two minutes to submit him at UFC 285.
"I have to assume this is a nerve-racking spot for Tom Aspinall because he talked himself into a position, and we've all talked him into a position, where he's the best guy," Thomas told MMA Junkie. "Jon dismissed him and dismissed him and dismissed him. Then Jon dispatched of Ciryl Gane.
"So anything less than a first-round finish is going to be almost a disappointment for Tom Aspinall. Even a close win is going to be like, 'See, I told you, I beat that guy in seconds.' This is actually a pretty tough spot for Tom. If this fight had happened earlier it might be different, but this is a tough spot for Tom."
With Jones already claiming he's out of retirement and wants to compete on next year's White House event, Thomas urges Aspinall to capitalize if he can get past Gane.
"Fighters always think they're more important than they are," Thomas said. "We'll get to find out how important he really is. But a win here can really make him important. A big win against Ciryl Gane in Abu Dhabi and he grabs that mic, that's going to be the most important minute of his entire life. To be like, 'Yo, I just beat the guy that you beat, I beat him in two minutes and two seconds, and now I want to fight Jon Jones at the White House.' It's written. ...It doesn't matter if it happens or not. It doesn't matter.
"But the idea of him saying that. Just attaching himself, further attaching himself, to the situation. Now there's no denying. Now what would Jon Jones' rebuttal be. Now he can't say anything. That's the biggest thing. Even if the fight doesn't happen and Tom Aspinall goes on his run. If I'm Tom Aspinall and Jon Jones dismisses me, I'm going on a run. I'm beating up Derrick Lewis. I'm going after Jailton Almeida. I'm going after all these guys and create my won lane. But to say that to Jon Jones would be the nail in the coffin to me to Jon Jones' rebuttals."

38-year-old Neil Magny sets goal to re-enter UFC welterweight rankings

LAS VEGAS – Don't count Neil Magny out of the world's best just yet. Following an impressive TKO win over Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos, Magny, 38, made it clear that he intends to work his way back to the official UFC welterweight rankings, and be once again among the top 15 fighters in his weight class. Magny (30-13 MMA, 23-12 UFC) stopped Zaleski dos Santos (25-10-1 MMA, 11-6-1 UFC) this past Saturday in the main card of UFC on ESPN 71 – which took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The first goal for Magny was to get back in the win column, and with that checked out, he now looks up the top 15 of the welterweight division. "I tell everybody, you just have to set those goals and start knocking them out," Magny told MMA Junkie at the UFC on ESPN 71 post-fight press conference. "Goal 1 was to go out there a d get a win, that part is done. Now let's go find the next opponent, and hopefully it gets me closer to the rankings, and before you know it, I'm right back in there, ready to go." Magny, who's been fighting in the UFC since 2013, was coming off stoppage loses to young contenders Michael Morales and Carlos Prates prior to UFC on ESPN 71. With the win, not only was he able to stop a skid, but he also furthered his record for the most wins in UFC welterweight history. Despite nearing 40 years of age and having over 40 professional MMA fights, "The Haitian Sensation" is still feeling good, and very much liked the way he performed against Zaleski dos Santos. "Man, I felt great," Magny said. "Elizeu is a great opponent, he's a veteran as well. He made some really good adjustments in his training camp to come out here and fight in a way he thought he had the best chance of winning. He definitely pulled a different approach than what we're used to seeing from him in film. It just made him be an offensive grappler in that fight, but we're both veterans, and we figure out a way to get it done." Khabib Nurmagomedov: Conor McGregor can redeem image if he 'change how he is living'

Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn't think it's too late for Conor McGregor to put his life back on a more enlightened path. Nurmagomedov (29-0 MMA, 13-0 UFC) vs. McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) is arguably the most heated rivalry in UFC history, with their issues coming to a head at UFC 229 in October 2018 when "The Eagle" scored a fourth-round submission in their grudge match prior to a brawl breaking out inside the octagon at the conclusion of the bout. Their lives went down splinted paths after that night, with Nurmagomedov going on to be a dominant UFC lightweight champion until he retired from competition in October 2020. McGregor, meanwhile, has only won one fight since, and has found himself caught in a plethora of legal incidents and outside-the-cage controveries. Although few would blame Nurmagomedov if he had zero care about McGregor after all these years, he admits he hopes things turn in a more positive direction, and said it's still possible. 'This is punishment – the most beautiful part of this is Allah always give the chance to come back," Nurmagomedov said Saturday during an appearance for Miftaah Institute on Saturday in New York (H/T: Sneako). "'We always have in this world the chance to come back, and this is the most beautiful thing. It doesn't matter how you've been, Allah is gonna give you a chance always to come back. ... I think he has a chance. He has to change how he is living." Nurmagomedov said the onus will of course fall on McGregor to make the significant adjustments to avoid being involved in future negative headlines. If he doesn't consciously take those steps, however, then nothing is going to change for "The Notorious," who is currently claiming plans to make a UFC comeback following more than four years away after re-entering the UFC drug testing pool. 'Why am I talking about this? If he's going to change, he can change with him so many other lives too," Nurmagomedov said. 'That's why I wish him to change himself. If he's not going change, it will be punishment all his life.'
