Toddler dies, allegedly abused by father, stepmother
Kuala Terengganu OCPS Asst Comm Azli Mohd Noor said police received a report from Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital regarding the alleged abuse at 4.14pm on Wednesday (Aug 6).
He said the toddler, the youngest of two siblings, was brought to the hospital unconscious at 1pm that day by his father and stepmother.
According to him, the suspects claimed that, on Tuesday (Aug 5), the victim fell, causing his forehead to swell, but he played as usual after his father applied ice to reduce the swelling.
"However, at about noon the next day (Wednesday), while preparing to feed him milk, the suspect (the victim's father) found the victim weak and his body limp. The man claimed that he massaged the boy's neck to prevent a seizure, causing it to bruise," he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 10).
Azli said the suspects took the victim to the Manir Health Clinic, but he was referred to the hospital due to his critical condition.
He said an examination revealed the victim suffered brain injuries as well as bruises and wounds believed to have been caused by blunt force trauma.
"The victim was pronounced dead at 2.05pm yesterday (Aug 9). A post-mortem revealed the cause of death was an intracranial haemorrhage due to blunt force trauma. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to hitting the victim with a clothes hanger," he said.
The 27-year-old man and 30-year-old woman were detained at 10 pm in Marang shortly after the boy's burial, he said, adding that they are being remanded for seven days starting today under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
"Police also seized a clothes hanger used in the incident. The suspects' other son, aged three, has been placed under the care of the Social Welfare Department," he added. – Bernama

MELAKA, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- An electrical goods technician was charged in the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court here today with 52 counts of committing incest, physical sexual assault and recording pornographic videos of his biological daughter since May. According to the charges, the 41-year-old man is accused of committing the offences at a house in Taman Tambak Paya Harmoni, Melaka Tengah, against his 18-year-old daughter between May 12 and Aug 6. When the charges were read before Judge Haderiah Siri, the accused pleaded not guilty to all counts. Of the total charges, 17 were framed under Section 376B of the Penal Code for committing incest, which carries imprisonment of not less than 10 years and up to 30 years, and whipping, if convicted. For the other 34 charges, the accused was charged under Sections 14(b) and 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act (SOACA) 2017, read together with Section 16(1) of the same Act. The offences under those sections carry a penalty of imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping, while Section 16(1) of SOACA 2017 provides for imprisonment not exceeding five years and a minimum of two strokes of the cane. One charge was also brought under Section 7 of SOACA 2017 for producing child pornography by recording two images of his daughter naked in a bathroom at the same location on July 9. If convicted, the accused faces imprisonment of up to 20 years and not less than five strokes of the cane. The prosecution, led by Muhamad Ehsan Nasarudin, proposed bail of RM20,000 for each charge with additional conditions including prohibition on contacting the victim and witnesses, reporting to the nearest police station every two weeks and surrendering his passport to the court.

Education Ministry to work with stakeholders to clarify guidelines on handling bullying
KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will conduct engagement sessions with all stakeholders to explain the current guidelines for handling bullying offences, says Minister Fadhlina Sidek ( pic ). She said the move was in response to one of the four demands in the #JusticeForZara memorandum submitted to the ministry by a group of student activists here on Tuesday (Aug 12). "The ministry is also open to views and suggestions to improve the existing guidelines," she said in a Facebook post. On the demand for a comprehensive reform of the national education system, particularly in relation to bullying issues, Fadhlina said the ministry had announced several important measures to enhance safety in all educational institutions under its purview. "This includes conducting safety audits, improving the bullying complaint system, setting up a safety reform committee, taking stern action such as suspending and expelling students involved in bullying, and ensuring psychosocial support aspects are strengthened at every level," she said. On the demand to make mandatory and periodic training for all teachers, administrators and wardens on crisis intervention, student emotional management and professional procedures in handling bullying complaints, Fadhlina said training aspects would continue to be enhanced to ensure the readiness of school administrators, teachers and wardens. She also said that all educational institutions under the ministry's purview must comply with the guidelines for tackling bullying offences. Regarding the demand for the Education Ministry to provide an open explanation to the public about the case of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, she said the ministry would fully cooperate with the police investigation, and updates on the case would be communicated periodically by the police. Police deny beating suspects in Palestinian kidnapping case
KUALA LUMPUR: A police officer rejected claims that suspects in a Palestinian man's kidnapping case were beaten and forced to confess during their arrest three years ago. ASP Mohamad Jazlan Sharif denied allegations that two suspects suffered severe injuries, including a torn tongue, while in custody. The 42-year-old officer testified under cross-examination by defence lawyer Norma Goh Kim Lian in the High Court. Eight individuals face charges related to the abduction of a 31-year-old Palestinian man in Hulu Langat.
