4 held for murder of grain trader
Lucknow: Over a month after grain trader Sukhdev Lodhi, 45, was shot dead and his wife critically injured during a robbery attempt in Maharaniganj village, Rae Bareli police arrested four members of the gang involved in the crime after a late-night encounter near the Ganga Expressway underpass on Sunday, police said. SP Yashveer Singh said acting on a tip-off, the accused—Ramesh Verma, Anurag Babu, Sunil Kumar, and Kuldeep—were intercepted by a joint team of Kheeron police and the SOG. During the encounter, Ramesh sustained bullet injuries in both legs and is being treated at the district hospital. Police recovered four country made pistols (including the murder weapons), live cartridges, two motorcycles and mobile phones from the accused. The breakthrough came in connection with the FIR lodged after the June 30 murder of Sukhdev Lodhi, who was shot while sleeping on his rooftop with his wife Sarojini Devi, 40. She remains in critical condition at AIIMS Rae Bareli. According to investigators, The gang had conducted a recce after learning of Sukhdev's financial status. On the night of the crime, the gang members climbed to the rooftop via a neighbouring house. When one of them knocked over a utensil, Lodhi's wife woke up and raised an alarm. When the couple resisted the gang opened fire and fled without stealing anything. The arrested men admitted to being part of a larger gang that includes absconding Shivkumar, Vinod Pasi and Shivam Pasi. All had prior links to the victim or his locality—one even worked as a labourer near Sukhdev's shop, while another is a distant relative. The accused have criminal records. Ramesh Verma is wanted in a 2016 murder case in Jharkhand and Sunil Kumar faces charges of rape under Pocso and assault. Fresh charges under the BNS sections 310(3) (murder during robbery), 311 (attempt to murder), 61(2)(a) (criminal conspiracy), and provisions of the Arms Act have been filed. All four have been sent to judicial custody.
