FAA to review Boeing supply chain before approving hike to 737 MAX production

OSHKOSH, Wisconsin (Reuters) -The head of the Federal Aviation Administration said Boeing has not yet asked the agency to remove a 38-plane per month cap on 737 MAX production and will review the planemaker's supply chain before making any decision.
The FAA imposed the production cap shortly after a January 2024 mid-air emergency involving a new Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 missing four key bolts.
"We're going to want to look at the entire supply chain," FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford told reporters on the sidelines of an air show, praising Boeing's efforts to improve its culture and adding he would not be surprised if Boeing asks to raise the rate.
"I believe it's real, but it's still embryonic," Bedford said of the planemaker's improvements. "We want to see long-term trends, healthy workforce, healthy safety culture. And then we want to see real factory improvements."
Boeing did not immediately comment.
The FAA in May extended by three years a program that allows Boeing to perform some tasks on the agency's behalf like inspections, saying the planemaker had made improvements.
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said in May the planemaker is "pretty confident" that it can increase production of its best-selling 737 MAX jets to 42 a month.
Bedford also notes that the FAA is currently considering certifying the smallest and largest MAX variants -- the MAX 7 and MAX 10. Bedford said Boeing realizes getting the job done right the first time "actually is the cheapest way to make the plane.... I think they see real value in changing the culture on the shop floor, getting the defect rates down."
But he is not ready to ease oversight. "It's all trending in the right direction. It's all very encouraging, but we're a long ways away from saying we can let our guard down," Bedford said.

Airbnb forecasts Q3 revenue above estimates; plans $6 billion share buyback

By Aishwarya Jain and Doyinsola Oladipo (Reuters) -Airbnb forecast third-quarter revenue above Wall Street estimates on Wednesday and announced a new share repurchase program worth $6 billion, sending the vacation rentals company's shares up 3.4% after the bell. Growth of nights booked in the U.S. accelerated each month throughout the quarter ended June, driven by a rise in domestic travel, San Francisco-based Airbnb said, adding that it was encouraged by the trend for the current quarter. Several travel firms, like United Airlines and Wyndham Hotels, saw a recovery in U.S. travel demand after a slowdown in April, when consumers initially pulled back spending due to President Donald Trump's shifting trade policy. Airbnb's average daily rates, or the average cost per night, in North America rose 3% in the quarter, driven by strong demand for higher-priced listings. This trend is consistent with other travel companies, including hotel operator Marriott, where bookings for upscale properties and premium offerings helped offset weak demand in the budget segment. Excluding the impact of foreign exchange, ADR in the second quarter increased 1% and was up across all regions, largely due to price appreciation, the company said. Nights and seats booked, an updated metric which includes the number of services booked on Airbnb's platform rose 7% in the second quarter, while gross booking value increased 11% to $23.5 billion. "We had a strong Q2, exceeding expectations across our key metrics," CEO Brian Chesky said in a statement. The company reported quarterly revenue of $3.10 billion, compared with analysts' estimates of $3.04 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Airbnb expects third quarter revenue between $4.02 billion to $4.10 billion, the midpoint of which was higher than analysts' average estimate of $4.05 billion. However, the company cautioned that despite stronger night bookings in North America, growth could moderate given tougher year-over-year comparisons in the third and fourth quarters. It expects the implied take rate, or the ratio of revenue to gross bookings, to remain flat in the third quarter. The travel company posted a per-share profit of $1.03, compared with Wall Street estimates of 93 cents. Sign in to access your portfolio

Elf Beauty tops quarterly estimates on resilient demand for affordable lipsticks and skincare

(Reuters) -Elf Beauty beat first-quarter sales and profit estimates on Wednesday, fueled by resilient demand for its affordable products including lip oils and blush tints at retailers and online channels, despite broader retail slowdown. Shares of the company were up about 5% after the bell. The beauty retailer known for its vegan lip oils — available at drugstores and supermarkets including Walgreens, Target as well as Dollar Tree — has been able to resonate with millennial and Gen Z shoppers, who are often on the hunt for trendy makeup and skincare products. This, in turn, has been benefiting sales growth at Elf — short for eyes, lips and face — offering products priced as low as $2 at U.S. retailers including Walmart and Ulta Beauty. Meanwhile, luxury beauty makers such as Estee Lauder have been struggling to revive demand and the Trump administration's unpredictable trade policy has disrupted business operations worldwide. The company continues to refrain from providing an annual forecast owing to tariff-related uncertainty. Elf, which acquired Hailey Bieber's makeup brand Rhode, increased product prices by $1 across categories starting August 1 to counter trade-related costs, similar to broader industry peers. The company, which has reduced its production from China to "little less" than 75% from about 100% back in 2019, has also been optimizing its supply chain and diversifying its business to be able to address tariff-related headwinds, CEO Tarang Amin told Reuters on Wednesday. The company's quarterly revenue of $353.7 million beat estimates of $350.3 million, as per data compiled by LSEG. On an adjusted basis, the company's earnings came in at 89 cents per share, compared with analysts' estimates of 84 cents per share.
