The tourism industry is making efforts to become more eco-friendly, but some companies engage in "greenwashing" by making misleading claims about their environmental practices.
True sustainability in travel involves minimizing environmental impact, supporting local communities, and educating travelers.
Travelers can identify greenwashing by looking for concrete evidence of a company's environmental efforts, such as third-party certifications and detailed impact reports.
No single-use plastics. Don't wash your linens. Drink from a reusable water bottle. Turn off the lights when you're not in the room. The air conditioning stops if the sliding doors are open.
These are just some common eco-friendly claims that hotels and other travel companies inundate travelers with.
These actions seem valuable at first glance, given that the tourism industry accounts for approximately 8% of the world's carbon emissions, from transportation to food and energy consumption at hotels and on cruise ships, according to a 2018 study published in the Nature Climate Change journal. That number is only expected to grow.
So, why wouldn't the travel industry jump on the green bandwagon? According to Booking.com's Sustainable Travel 2024 report, green practices are appealing to 83% of the more than 31,000 survey respondents who said sustainable travel is important to them.
However, not all efforts are equal – or as meaningful.
"It can be confusing because there are a lot of entities trying to tap into the popularity of those buzzwords, and in academia, sustainable development is a broad and vague term that means a lot of different things to different people, so it's very easy to exploit that," said Dr. Mike Gunter, a professor of political science department chair at Rollins College who specializes in eco-tourism. "In that case, it's kind of like a marketing ploy, you could say."

In these ploys, companies deceptively claim to be environmentally friendly without actually making a significant impact. The practice is known as greenwashing. For many travelers, it can be overwhelming to navigate messaging and determine who's truly following through on their promises.
Here's how to figure out if a travel company is greenwashing or truly sustainable.
Greenwashing vs sustainability
While hanging up your towel so housekeeping doesn't toss it in the wash is "better than nothing," according to Gunter, it's also "not a deep or meaningful in ways true sustainable development would be." This is more of a PR move or a way to reduce a corporation's bottom line.
This is the very scenario that prompted environmentalist Jay Westerveld to first coin the term greenwashing in a 1986 essay following an experience at a hotel in Fiji, according to the National Resources Defense Council. The hotel asked guests to reuse towels to protect the planet, but at the same time, it was clearing out island ecosystems for expansion.
Gunter broke it down into three main concepts that if a company is doing this, it's on the right (and sustainable) path:

"We can take these lessons from our travels and apply them back to our homes and communities and, in some cases, lobby for those kinds of changes," Gunter said.
A pioneer in the ecotourism industry who was named as a 2023 Meaningful Business Leader for her work aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Sarah Dusek thinks about sustainability this way: "How does this business become regenerative? How do we put back things that have been lost – not just how do we not take – but how could we use ecotourism to be a regenerative force in the world?"
When Dusek started conceptualizing her newest company Few & Far, which takes guests on carbon-neutral safaris with local conservation nonprofits, she considered the least impactful ways to not only build her lodge but how it runs. Instead of importing wood, she's using invasive albizia trees for hardwood, which also removes it from harming the ecosystem while also regenerating the land by regrowing native grasses. The lodge will run on 100% solar energy and food for her trips is sourced within a 50-mile radius from local purveyors. For every traveler, Dusek tracks the carbon emissions of her trips – covered with a carbon offset fee.
How to spot greenwashing
Unfortunately, the travel industry doesn't always make it easy to decipher between greenwashing and a substantial impact. Websites and marketing campaigns like to throw out words like "green" and "eco-friendly," but it's tough to know what's truly being done.
"It's hard to spot, to be able to differentiate greenwashing from really good practices," said Dusek. "I think one of the things for me is looking at how deep the initiatives are."
Here are a few things travelers can look for to determine greenwashing:

"If it really is an embedded philosophy in the company, everybody will know what they do," Dusek said.
While there is an onus on the travel industry to shrink its footprint, tackling a crisis as vast as climate change demands collective action from all industries.
"Ecotourism is not a silver bullet to address sustainable development, climate change, or any of our overarching societal problems," Gunter said. "But it has remarkable potential to expand consciousness on the problem and tap into some of the ideological divides that we have in the U.S."

A hotel in Chester is said to be so haunted that some people cannot stay for an entire night. Ye Olde King's Head in Chester is said to be one of the UK's most haunted buildings, home to over a dozen ghosts, dating back to 1622. The ghosts are believed to be the tormented souls of civil war soldiers, Roman soldiers and young children and women who worked there when it was a brothel. After seeing an opportunity arise, Harry Achilleos bought the site back in 2013. Now, it is a "My Haunted Hotel" and has 24-hour surveillance cameras to catch any potential paranormal activity. Even some of Harry's own family refuses to visit. Speaking exclusively to Reach Plc's Screen Time team, Harry himself admitted he has faced paranormal activity in the hotel. He said: "There is a belief that when you do renovation work, the whole place becomes active. We had a refurbishment in 2014 and all of the rooms were renovated, and the place kicked off." He added: "One night there was no-one in the building and something had started. I watched the (bed) covers wrap around me tighter and tighter and I just said 'please stop' and then I saw the covers relax. "You can hear knocking on doors every night and the sound of children running down corridors. "Out of the three of us, I'm the bravest but the King's Head doesn't feel like there's anything evil there, it's really just a haunted place and so active, whereas our other sites it can feel like there's an evil presence." Harry bought the site "purely on a whim", having always been into paranormal activity and supernatural sightings, often travelling around the country. Now, he hosts My Haunted Project with Dan Callaghan and Danny Moss, with other haunted sites located in Pendle Hill and the USA. Harry added: "It nearly made me bankrupt, I had to get the pub and hotel right before I could do this and it wasn't until lockdown I decided to install the cameras." With the three locations, My Haunted Project is focused on "changing the paranormal and evolving it to a new level based on real evidence, eye witness accounts and 24/7 surveillance". Speaking about his idea for 24-hour paranormal surveillance, he said: "It solidified my idea when I had normal hotel guests, before this project, leaving in the middle of the night and leaving letters and pictures with what they saw and experienced. "You can only tell someone what you've seen so much before they think you're a liar but now we've got the footage to back it up." Capturing shadow figures, poltergeist activity and disembodied voices, the hotel is also home to some of Britain's most haunted collections. The "Grace Doll" has her own room and is in a special glass case, but is said to be the UK's most haunted artefact. Harry added: "People have to sign a disclaimer in order to go in, she's had a lot of psychological effects. The room smells different, almost pungent and we've had people faint in there." Off the Beaten Track: Rock Climbing in Croatia's Paklenica National Park

The most famous climbing site in Croatia, the gorges and cliffs of Paklenica National Park offer great climbing variety. It lies outside Starigrad near Zadar, and has routes for everyone from absolute beginners to experts. The tombs (tumuli) of Gomila and Paklaric testify that the town dates back to prehistoric times. There was once a Roman settlement here called Argyruntum, and archaeologists found a necropolis from the 1st or 2nd century that contained bronze tools, jewelry, glassware, and ceramics. You can view their finds in the Archaeological Museum in Zadar. The pre-Romanesque church of St. Peter dates back to the 10th century. Paklenica became a National Park in 1949. In 1978, UNESCO proclaimed the entire Velebit region a biogenetic reserve. Inside the park, each of the two main gorges has a name that underlines the difference between them: Velika (Great) Paklenica and Mala (Small) Paklenica. Velika Paklenica consists of two valleys. The longitudinal valley runs parallel to the Southern Velebit range, while the other is carved between the peaks of Debeli Kuk and Anica Kuk. Anica Kuk is the only place in the park where climbing is allowed. Because of its relative inaccessibility, the upper part of Velika Paklenica has developed a lush forest. In the transverse valleys, influenced by the Adriatic Sea, shrubs and Mediterranean maquis cover the slopes. The climatic and topographical differences that characterize this region, which extends from the peaks of Velebit (1,700m) to the sea, are the reason the flora and fauna are so interesting. Botanists have recorded over 500 plant species. The fauna is also rich: over 500 species of insects, several reptile species, and as many as 200 different types of birds. In Paklenica, the rock is mostly karst limestone. It is very compact, although sharp in places. There are numerous routes of all difficulty levels and lengths, from single pitches on cliffs to multi-pitch routes to a height of 350m. The style also varies, from technical slabs to large overhangs. The large walls host numerous well-bolted routes that climb on ridges or easy slabs. But there is no shortage of long sport routes that tackle much more sustained terrain with difficulties up to 8a. In addition, there are a handful of beautiful trad routes, protected only with nuts and Friends. For those who want to try something different, there are some interesting artificial routes. The first climbers visited Paklenica in the late 1930s, but the first route was Brahm in 1940. Between 1957 and 1969, Croatian climbers largely had the gorge to themselves and opened many new routes. Today, many of these are considered true classics, such as Mosoraški (1957), Velebitaški (1961), and Klin (1966). Later, it was mainly Slovenian climbers who opened further new routes. Among them was the legendary Franc Knez, who opened around 40 routes. Many of Knez's routes remain among the most difficult in Paklenica today. During the 1980s, Italian Mauro Corona established the first short sport routes in Klanci, the narrowest part of the canyon. His first route was Stimula, 7a. Soon after, Maurizio Zanolla made the first free ascent of what is still the hardest route in Paklenica: Il Marattoneta (8b+). Adam Ondra onsighted it in 2020 and also made a new variant, named Genius Loci (9a). During the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the park was closed for a few years. When it reopened in 1995, Austrians Ingo Schalk and Gerhard Grabner immediately opened a great new route, Waterworld (7b+). Currently, the most active climbers are Croatians Boris Cujic and Ivica Matkovic, who are responsible for a whole series of new routes. They have also fixed and rebolted numerous old routes, replacing countless rusty bolts. While there is little chance of discovering something new on the big walls of the gorge, there is still potential for hard sport routes in sectors like Rupe, or even in more distant crags, just outside the Paklenica canyon. Paklenica is a national park, so there are strict regulations for environmental protection. There are also areas where authorities prohibit climbing, such as Mala Paklenica, and on Debeli Kuk in the Velika Paklenica gorge from the lower to the upper parking lot. Climbing is also prohibited from Manita Pec to the upper part of Velika Parklenica. These prohibitions protect bird habitat and help to avoid accidents from rockfall. There is a fee to enter the park, but there are three and five-day ticket options for climbers that are valid for 30 days. Climbing officials supervise the climbing in Paklenica. They ensure the safety of the routes and are in charge of maintenance. Equipping new routes and installing new equipment on old routes requires permission from the Paklenica National Park management. The best time of year is from April to the end of October. In winter, strong winds are a problem. However, the Crljenica section has recently been developed, and with its sunny position, it is suitable for climbing even in winter. During the spring, expect frequent showers, though the karst dries quickly. In summer, it can be hot, but you can always find a place in the shade, such as on Anica Kuk, throughout the morning. In Stari Grad, there are several shops, open even on holidays, a gas station, and everything you need for a pleasant stay. If you want to camp, many campsites offer budget accommodation, such as NP Paklenica, Marko, Vesna, Peko, and Popo. Affordable rooms are available at Ana Marasovic, Pansion Andelko, Hotel Rajna, and Restaurant Paklenica. Although climbing is prohibited, we highly recommend a trip to the nearby Mala Paklenica gorge. This valley is smaller and rarely visited, so the nature tends to be more primeval and wild. In Velika Paklenica, visiting the Manita Pec cave is another must.
