James Maddison out for most of Spurs season with ACL injury

TOTTENHAM Hotspur midfielder James Maddison faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury.
The England international ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during a pre-season friendly against Newcastle in Seoul.
Maddison collapsed in pain during the 1-1 draw without any contact from an opponent and was stretchered off.
Spurs confirmed the 28-year-old will undergo surgery in the coming days before beginning rehabilitation.
This setback comes after Maddison had just returned from a knee problem that kept him out at the end of last season.
The injury severely impacts Tottenham's plans under new manager Thomas Frank ahead of their Premier League opener.
It also deals a blow to Maddison's hopes of making England's squad for next year's World Cup under Thomas Tuchel.
Tottenham begin their competitive season against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup on August 13.
Their Premier League campaign kicks off three days later with a home fixture against Burnley.
The club statement expressed support for Maddison during his recovery process. - AFP

Kane hails Son partnership as Premier League's finest after Spurs exit

Harry Kane (right) described his partnership with Son Heung-min as one of the best in Premier League history, built on strong connection. (EPA Images pic) LONDON : Harry Kane paid tribute to his former Tottenham Hotspur teammate Son Heung-min, describing their partnership as 'one of the best' in Premier League history following the South Korean's departure from the club. Son, who combined with Kane for 47 league goals to form a lethal partnership for the best part of a decade at Spurs, joined Los Angeles FC on a record-breaking Major League Soccer transfer on Wednesday. The 33-year-old South Korea skipper had moved to North London from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, bagging 173 goals and 101 assists in 454 appearances and leading them to their first trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League title in May. 'Massive congratulations to him and his career at Tottenham,' Bayern Munich striker Kane told reporters after his side's 4-0 friendly win over former club Spurs on Thursday. 'First and foremost, a great person. I've got to know him really well as a friend, and just how humble he is and how good a guy he is. 'I think as a player, you know, we had one of the best partnerships in Premier League history. We just had that connection that we loved. 'It's a great way for his Tottenham career to end, to lift the trophy last year with the team… and now it's a new chapter for him, he'll go to LA, and I wish him all the best, and I hope to see him soon and we can catch up.' Kane spent most of his career at Spurs after joining their academy as an 11-year-old, scoring a club record 280 goals in over 430 appearances in all competitions. The 32-year-old England captain joined German giants Bayern in August 2023.

Kane scores as Bayern thump Spurs in pre-season friendly

MUNICH: Harry Kane scored his first goal against his former side as Bayern Munich romped past Tottenham 4-0 at home in a pre-season friendly on Thursday. Kane, who is boyhood club Tottenham's all-time top goalscorer with 280 strikes in 435 matches, put Bayern in the lead after 12 minutes with a composed penalty box finish. The England captain then had a chance to double Bayern's lead two minutes later when Joao Palhinha, who joined Spurs from Bayern on a season-long loan on Sunday, gave away a penalty. Kane however slipped, blasting his shot well over the bar. It was the first time Kane failed to convert a spot kick since his miss in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final defeat to France. Kingsley Coman added the home side's second with a superb curling shot from the edge of the box with 61 minutes gone. Bayern teenagers Lennart Karl and Jonah Kusi-Asare both scored in the dying stages to complete the one-sided victory. Kane joined Bayern in a 100 million euro (£87 million) transfer from Spurs in the summer of 2023. The match was the Europa League winners' last chance to fine tune before next Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup clash with European champions Paris Saint-Germain. Spurs have had a mixed bag under new coach Thomas Frank this pre-season, beating London rivals Arsenal along with Reading, while being held to draws with Newcastle, Luton Town and Wycombe. dwi/nr
