Thunder's Lu Dort to have NBA title parade in Montreal next week

Global Newsa day ago
The Larry O'Brien Trophy will be in Montreal next week.
Lu Dort, who won an NBA championship in June with the Oklahoma City Thunder alongside fellow Canadian Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, will have a two-day celebration in his home city.
On Aug. 20, Dort will be accepting a special invitation from Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante to City Hall. About 200 members of the sports community will be there to recognize his championship win and his dedication to youth in Montreal.
The following day, there will be a homecoming parade in Montreal-Nord, the borough where he grew up.
'This summer has been a dream come true — winning the championship and having the opportunity to come back home, with the trophy, to celebrate here in Montréal,' Dort said in a release. 'I'm just grateful to share this with the people who have supported me from day one.'

The Seattle SuperSonics won the NBA title in 1979; the team was moved to Oklahoma City in 2008. There's nothing in the rafters in Oklahoma City to commemorate that title.
The 26-year-old Dort, in his sixth season with the Thunder, has been a defensive cornerstone and earned his first NBA all-defensive first team nod this past season. Oklahoma City had the best record in the regular season in the NBA at 68-14.
The Thunder were also the youngest team to win a title in nearly a half-century.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who was named Finals MVP after winning regular-season MVP and being the scoring champion, had a parade in Hamilton on Aug. 7. He was presented the key to the city and was honoured at the Hamilton Tiger-Cats' game against the B.C. Lions that night.
Dort will also be hosting the fifth edition of Camp Élite from Aug. 22-23, bringing together 50 of Québec's top young male basketball players for two days of training, mentorship and motivation.

Cubs calling up top prospect OF Owen Caissie

(Photo credit: Cody Scanlan/The Register / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images) Outfielder Owen Caissie, the No. 1 prospect in the Cubs' minor league system, is expected to join Chicago Thursday in Toronto. The Cubs were set to officially call up Caissie from Triple-A Iowa before the game in Toronto, but manager Craig Counsell told reporters he wasn't sure if Caissie would arrive in time to play. 'I'd love to have him be in the lineup, but we're just gonna wait and see what his scheduled arrival time is,' Counsell told reporters a bit more than two hours prior to game time. If Caissie doesn't arrive to Toronto in time to play, his first MLB chance would have to wait until Friday, when the Cubs open a three-game home series with the Pittsburgh Pirates. MLB Pipeline ranks Caissie as the No. 45 overall prospect in baseball. On the season, he is hitting .289 with 100 hits, 26 doubles, two triples, 22 home runs and 52 RBIs in 93 games. Caissie, 23, was selected in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres. He is the highest-ranked Canadian outfielder ever drafted. With the 2020 minor league season canceled because of the pandemic, Caissie never played in the Padres organization. He was traded to the Cubs along with three other prospects and right-hander Zach Davies in the seven-player deal that sent right-hander Yu Davish and catcher Victor Caratini to the Padres in December 2020. If Caissie arrives in time for the game, he'll be playing in front of the home folks. He is from Burlington, Ont., about a 70-minute drive to Rogers Centre in Toronto. He is expected to take the roster spot of catcher Miguel Amaya, who was carted off the field with a sprained ankle in Chicago's 4-1 win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

The Mammoth selected Desnoyers with the fourth overall pick of the 2025 NHL Draft. Desnoyers, 18, recorded 84 points (35 goals, 49 assists) in 56 games last season for Moncton of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League. He added 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists) in 19 playoff games, winning the QMJHL playoff MVP trophy and leading to the Wildcats to the league title. He has yet to sign his NHL entry-level contract and could choose to play in college in the upcoming season. --Field Level Media
