Iran holds state funeral for slain military commanders and scientists

Saudi Gazette2 days ago

TEHRAN — Iran held a state funeral on Saturday for dozens of senior military commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians killed during the 12-day war with Israel, which ended earlier this week in a US-brokered ceasefire.
Thousands of mourners gathered near Tehran's Enghelab Square, where coffins draped in Iranian flags and adorned with portraits of the dead were paraded through the crowd.
Authorities said 60 individuals, including top military and scientific figures, were buried.
Government offices were closed, and free transportation was offered to encourage public attendance.
Among the dead was Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, Iran's highest-ranking military officer and chief of staff of the armed forces.
He was laid to rest alongside his wife and daughter, who were killed in an Israeli strike.Other prominent figures buried included Hossein Salami, commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, head of Azad University in Tehran.Iranian authorities said the overall death toll inside Iran reached 627 during the conflict, while Israeli officials reported 28 deaths following missile attacks launched by Iran. The funeral was attended by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, an advisor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Shamkhani sustained injuries in an earlier Israeli airstrike. The war, which saw U.S. forces intervene with strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, has left diplomatic tensions at a boiling point.U.S. President Donald Trump said he would 'absolutely' consider future military action against Iran if intelligence suggested Tehran was enriching uranium to dangerous levels.Speaking at the White House on Friday, Trump claimed he had been considering sanctions relief but abruptly abandoned the effort following what he called 'hostile' comments by Khamenei.'I saved him from a very ugly and ignominious death,' Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, 'and he does not have to say, 'thank-you, president Trump!''Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued a sharp response, warning Trump to refrain from 'disrespectful' language toward Iran's supreme leader. He insisted that while Iranian nuclear sites suffered 'serious damage,' the strikes had 'achieved nothing significant.'The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, noted that the full extent of the damage to Iran's nuclear program remains unclear. He stressed that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon 'will not be solved militarily,' and emphasized the need for diplomacy.

Intercepted Iranian communications downplay damage from US attack: Report

Intercepted Iranian communications downplayed the extent of damage caused by US strikes on Iran's nuclear program, the Washington Post reported on Sunday, citing four people familiar with classified intelligence circulating within the US government. A source, who declined to be named, confirmed that account to Reuters but said there were serious questions about whether the Iranian officials were being truthful, and described the intercepts as unreliable indicators. The report by the Post is the latest, however, to raise questions about the extent of the damage to Iran's nuclear program. A leaked preliminary assessment from the Defense Intelligence Agency cautioned the strikes may have only set back Iran by months. President Donald Trump has said the strikes 'completely and totally obliterated' Iran's nuclear program, but US officials acknowledge it will take time to form a complete assessment of the damage caused by the US military strikes last weekend. The White House dismissed the report by the Post. 'The notion that unnamed Iranian officials know what happened under hundreds of feet of rubble is nonsense. Their nuclear weapons program is over,' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was quoted as saying by the Post. In an interview broadcast on Sunday on Fox News, Trump reiterated his confidence that the strikes had destroyed Iran's nuclear capabilities. 'It was obliterated like nobody's ever seen before. And that meant the end to their nuclear ambitions, at least for a period of time,' he said on the 'Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo' program.

Trump blasts 'communist' winner of NY Democratic primary

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump branded the winner of New York City's mayoral Democratic primary a 'pure communist' in remarks that aired Sunday, an epithet the progressive candidate dismissed as political theatrics. Zohran Mamdani's shock win last week against a scandal-scarred political heavyweight resonated as a thunderclap within the party, and drew the ire of Trump and his collaborators, who accused Mamdani of being a radical extremist. The Republican's aggressive criticism of the self-described democratic socialist is sure to ramp up over the coming months as Trump's party seeks to push Democrats away from the political center and frame them as too radical to win major US elections. 'He's pure communist' and a 'radical leftist... lunatic,' Trump fumed on Fox News talk show 'Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo.' 'I think it's very bad for New York,' added Trump, who grew up in the city and built his sprawling real estate business there. 'If he does get in, I'm going to be president and he is going to have to do the right thing (or) they're not getting any money' from the federal government. Trump's White House has repeatedly threatened to curb funding for Democratic-led US cities if they oppose his policies, including cutting off money to so-called sanctuary cities which limit their cooperation with immigration authorities. Mamdani also took to the talk shows Sunday, asserting he would 'absolutely' maintain New York's status as a sanctuary city so that 'New Yorkers can get out of the shadows and into the full life of the city that they belong to.' Asked directly on NBC's 'Meet the Press' whether he is a communist, Mamdani — a 33-year-old immigrant aiming to become New York's first Muslim mayor — responded 'No, I am not. 'And I have already had to start to get used to the fact that the president will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I'm from, who I am, ultimately because he wants to distract from what I'm fighting for,' Mamdani said. 'I'm fighting for the very working people that he ran a campaign to empower, that he has since then betrayed.' The Ugandan-born state assemblyman had trailed former governor Andrew Cuomo in polls but surged on a message of lower rents, free daycare and buses, and other populist ideas in the notoriously expensive metropolis. Although registered Democrats outnumber Republicans three to one in New York, victory for Mamdani in November is not assured. Current Mayor Eric Adams is a Democrat but is campaigning for re-election as an independent, while Cuomo may also run unaffiliated.

EU Must Take Strong Response against Israel: EX-Foreign Policy Chief

The EU's former Foreign Policy Chief, Josep Borrell, stated that the bloc must take a more assertive stance against Israel that has been violating the international law in its war on Gaza, according to Arab News. In an article for Foreign Affairs magazine, Borrell stressed that the EU has a 'duty' to intervene over the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Need for Joint Plan Co-authored with Kalypso Nicolaidis, the article affirmed that the EU has to make its joint plan as Europe can no longer afford to linger at the margin. 'Not only is Europe's own security at stake, but more important, European history imposes a duty on Europeans to intervene in response to Israel's violations of international law,' the article said. Last week, EU's Foreign Policy Chief, Kaja Kallas, said that it was 'very clear' Israel had violated its human rights commitments during its war on Gaza. In May, Borrell accused Israel of 'carrying out the largest ethnic-cleansing operation since the end of the Second World War.' Authors' Suggestions Both authors said that Europe's conflicting response to Gaza's humanitarian crisis can be partly explained by the hesitation of some countries such as Germany, Hungary and Austria to take action against Israel for historical reasons. They wrote that EU member states could use Article 20 of the EU's treaty to 'allow for at least nine member states to come together to utilize certain foreign policy tools not related to defense.' 'Because such an action has never been taken before, those states would have to explore what (it) … would concretely allow them to do,' the Foreign Affairs article said. The authors also stated that the bloc should act as a powerful mediator in the Middle East. 'Some EU leaders cautiously backed the International Criminal Court's investigations, while others, such as Austria and Germany, have declined to implement its arrest warrants against Israeli officials,' they wrote. Overall, the EU, as a bloc, has been 'largely relegated to the sidelines, divided internally and overshadowed in ceasefire diplomacy by the US and regional actors such as Egypt and Qatar. Shouldn't the EU also have acted as a mediator?'
