Gosford preview: Kris Lees confident in Golden Smile's potential over staying trip

Imported mare Golden Smile faced a stiff challenge when she stepped up to city company last start but trainer Kris Lees looks to have found an ideal race back in provincial company
Golden Smile placed in her first three starts this campaign before breaking through with a big all-the-way win in a Newcastle Maiden on a Heavy 10 over 1890m before stepping up to a Benchmark 64 on the Kensington 11 days later when fifth to Rotagilla over 1800m.
'She was very good in winning but the wet track may have aided her,' said Lees.
'It was a big jump going to town last start and coming back a little in distance could have been detrimental to her.
'Going up to 2100 metres this week looks a nice option for her. 'She is still going to get a winter track this week and she seems to be in good order.'
A good day for Newcastle trainers, claiming four winners on the home track today. A winning double for @Leesracing and @gibbo7822 with Golden Smile (Race 1) and First Person (Race 7) while David Atkins (Scholl Deep - R6) and @perry_racing1 (General Soho- R4) also had success.… pic.twitter.com/k9GWyWPyzd

The daughter of Sea The Stars drops back to a Class 1 and Maiden Plate and steps up to 2100m.
'This looks a nice race for her. A bit of a gap between runs may suit her as well being a European-bred mare,' he said.
Lightly-raced three-year-old Hawker Hall kicked off his campaign with a three-and-a-half length win over 900m on his home track on April 23 and wasn't seen on raceday again until May 26 when fifth to Prima Bella on a Heavy 10 over the same track and distance.
He steps up to 1100m this week in the Class 1 Handicap with Jason Collett back on board.
'We wanted to find the right track and run him at home again,' Lees said.
'The other day, it might have just been a bit too heavy for him.
'He's a big, heavy horse and he does like a bit of cut in the ground but not really testing like it was.
'It was just a bit waterlogged that track and made a bit of hard work for him.
'He might be better suited now getting out over just a little bit further to get a more controlled run (in front).'
Lees has been pleased with the form of Surreal I Am in Queensland this preparation where he has won two of his three starts and feels he deserves a chance back in New South Wales.
The gelding lines up in the Benchmark 64 Handicap (1600m) where he will make his presence felt.

'His two wins on the Sunshine Coast were on the polytrack but that said, I can't fault him at home,' he said.
'He will be a place chance.'
Joining him in that race is Oakfield Mamselle who is resuming from a spell.
While she has a win and a second from three first-up runs, Lees feels she will be improved by this run.
'She seems to be coming up well. Her trials were only fair but her work since has been pleasing,' he said.
Lees' other runner for the meeting is Enchanted World in the opening race, the 2&3YO Maiden Handicap (1100m).
The daughter of Ardrossan debuted on her home track on May 26 where she settled last and came between runners in the straight to finish a three-and-a-quarter length second behind Pratt.
'She was okay on debut and will appreciate stepping up a little in trip,' said Lees.
Lees also has Denuto and Irish Thunder running at Ballina and feels they will be competitive in their respective assignments.
'Denuto hasn't been far away and is close to getting a result. Hopefully he can break through,' he said.
'Irish Thunder ran well first-up. He just got hampered a little.
'He has improved from that and should run well.'

The week started well for trainer Scott Henley when stable star Volcanic Love trialled stylishly at Grafton and he hopes it can end on a high note with a winning double.
Henley was pleased when the meeting originally set for Lismore was moved to Ballina when his promising filly Confederate Lady races so well.
The three-year-old had her first three starts at the track where she recorded an impressive maiden win over 1012m at just her second career start and placed in her other two runs at the venue.
'I'm definitely not disappointed they moved the meeting to Ballina. She loves the joint,' said Henley.
Since resuming with a close third in a Class 1 on a Heavy 10 at Ballina on April 8, Confederate Lady has finished third behind the promising Seymour Stars at Port Macquarie and an unlucky fourth to Takemine at Inverell.

'She was just a gallop short going into that run because we'd had plenty of rain up here and couldn't get her tied right down.
'Then she ran into a good horse at Port Macquarie.
'Last start she got back further than we expected and was a bit stiff.
The daughter of Supido is out to add to her record when she steps out in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1000m) where she has drawn barrier 15 although she will come in after scratchings.
'I had her in a couple of Class 1 races that were washed out and the only available race at the next meeting has been a Benchmark 58,' he said.
'Each time in those Class 1s, to my way of thinking, she was a good thing.
'In the (benchmark) 58s, we go from a good thing to just a chance.
'From a wide gate this week, she is just a good chance with luck in running.'
Henley has been pleased with the two runs of former Victorian three-year-old Zouandme and gives him a good chance in the Country Boosted Maiden Plate (1000m).
The gelding raced on a hot speed when seventh at Grafton first-up before being beaten just over a length when sixth at Inverell.
'He has those two runs,' he said.
'He was big in condition first-up and had a good blow after the race.
'He improved a fair bit off that going into the race at Inverell and has come on nicely since then.
'The only reservation I have is the very heavy track.'

Tennis Nick Kyrgios unveils dramatic new look on Instagram, opens up on split with Costeen Hatzi

Don't miss out on the headlines from Tennis. Followed categories will be added to My News. Nick Kyrgios has shown off a dramatic new look and finally commented on the end of his four-year relationship with influencer Costeen Hatzi. Kyrgios, who turned 30 on April 27, and Hatzi ended their relationship in March this year. Watch every game of The NBA Finals LIVE with ESPN on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? The Australian, whose tennis career has been blighted by significant injuries over the past three years, took to Instagram over the last 24 hours for a Q and A session with his 4.1 million followers. Using the caption 'Don't hold back, ask whatever', Kyrgios was hit with a wide range of questions and chose to respond to a number of them using Instagram stories. Among queries about his tennis career and his advice for others, the Canberran was also asked a question by someone who has been following his styling trends. Nick Kyrgios answered a wide range of questions on Instagram. (Photo by Don Arnold/WireImage) 'How's 30 treating you so far and when are you debuting the new haircut?' was one of the questions. Kyrgios replied with a video of him driving and the caption: '30 is unreal – not even in my prime yet. And shaved heads is UNREAL.' You can see the new look in the video below. Cracks had appeared in Kyrgios and Hatzi's relationship earlier this year. In a telling sign in this day and age, they both removed each other from their Instagram bios before Hatzi broke her silence on the rumours in April. 'It's been great,' Hatzi told The Daily Telegraph when asked about her life since the romance ended. 'I'm still going on with work and I have a few different brands that I'm working with at the moment.' She went on to insist that it's important to 'put yourself first' in life. Naturally, Kyrgios – who has stayed quiet about the details of the separation – was also asked about Hatzi during his fan session. 'Will you ever talk on the split with C or keeping it private?' was one question. He said: 'Things happen. I wish her nothing but the best. So many incredible memories that will stay with me.' Kyrgios was also asked what he thought of another former partner, tennis player Anna Kalinskaya, who later had a relationship with current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner which ended in May. Earlier this month, Kyrgios got tongues wagging after a public display with a woman being called a Hatzi 'look-alike'. Kyrgios began chatting with former Love Island reality TV contestant Mia Dalkos. It has not gone unnoticed that Dalkos, whose real name is Efthimia, has unmistakably similar features to the woman Kyrgios recently broke up with. Kyrgios and popular fashion designer Dalkos caused a stir with flirty recent social media engagements. Dalkos captured Kyrgios' attention on Instagram when she shared a video of herself glammed up at a hair salon. Kyrgios sparked romance rumours with Mia Dalkos (left) and his post on Hatzi. Photos: Instagram Kyrgios commented on the post by sharing a 'double eyes' emoji — a less than subtle way of showing Dalkos that he was interested in the post. The 23-year-old South Australian responded to the former Wimbledon finalist by posting a shy smiling emoji of her own. The 30-year-old Canberran followed up his first message by posting a blunt 'Beautiful' comment on a second photo Dalkos shared the following day. Kyrgios was also in the news in the past week after it emerged he had been axed from a commentary role with the BBC. Reports first landed on Wednesday morning this week the Australian tennis star has been told his services will not be required when the network begins its coverage of Wimbledon, beginning June 30. Kyrgios has barely been sighted on a tennis court in recent years. (Photo by Simon Bruty/Anychance/Getty Images) It comes after his appointment to the broadcaster's team for the event last year sparked uproar. In another body blow, The Telegraph reports Kyrgios will also not appear during ESPN's coverage of the tournament, despite working with the American broadcaster during the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025. It has been a brutal few weeks for the 30-year-old after he was last month forced to pull out of his plans to play doubles with partner Jordan Thompson at the French Open. Citing a recently flared up knee injury, Kyrgios was forced to pull out on the eve of the event and he last week confirmed he will not play at Wimbledon this year because of injuries. Proteas dig in at Lord's, Cummins makes breakthrough

South Africa have made the most of perfect batting conditions at Lord's to reduce Australia's lead to 91 in the World Test Championship final. Starting day two in serious trouble at 4-43, the Proteas were able to frustrate Australia's star-studded bowling attack and move to 5-121 at lunch on day two. Australia, boosted by Beau Webster's 72 and a 66 from Steve Smith, posted 212 on Wednesday after being sent in to bat. With the sun shining from ball one on Thursday, unlike day one when it was overcast until the afternoon, South Africa batted sensibly and attempted to keep the scoreboard moving. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma survived a controversial DRS decision, allowing him to make important inroads into Australia's lead. Adjudged lbw on 16 off Josh Hazlewood, Bavuma left it late to review, but eventually took the decision upstairs with four seconds remaining. The ball would have been smashing into the stumps, but a spike on snicko incredibly meant Bavuma had survived. Former England captain Alastair Cook said during radio commentary he didn't believe Bavuma had hit it. But after looking promising, highlighted by smashing opposing captain Pat Cummins for six, Bavuma (36) scooped a drive to cover where Marnus Labuschagne pulled off a terrific diving catch. Cummins (2-24) got the crucial breakthrough, gaining revenge for being the first bowler in the match to be hit over the rope. Australia have managed to produce several edges, but none have carried completely to the slips cordon. No.6 David Bedingham (39*) has looked steady at the crease, and will resume with dangerous wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne (11*) after lunch. South Africa, who won seven-straight Tests to qualify for the final, are attempting to break a title drought in ICC tournaments dating back to 1998.
