Brahmaputra's relentless erosion threatens tea estate, farmland at Chabua

Time of India15 hours ago

Dibrugarh: Massive erosion by the Brahmaputra, at Chabua in Dibrugarh, has led to large portions of the Balijan tea estate, along with agricultural fields, being washed away, leaving farmers and tea garden workers in distress.
The river's unchecked erosion has not only washed away parts of the tea plantation, it is also the Balijan Road and nearby embankments, raising fears of further devastation.
Residents of Balijan and Bogoritolia said the Brahmaputra's aggressive erosion has intensified in recent days, with nearly 50 metres of land having been washed away. The tea estate, a key source of livelihood for many, has suffered significant losses.
"We have lost vast stretches of land overnight. The river is advancing rapidly, and if no steps are taken, then the entire tea estate will be gone. Our livelihoods are at stake.
The govt must act immediately," said Rajen Tanti, a tea garden worker.
The erosion has also brought the Balijan Road and the nearby river embankment under severe threat. If the Brahmaputra's onslaught continues, vital infrastructure could collapse, cutting off connectivity and exposing nearby villages to flooding.

"The embankment is barely holding. If it breaches, several villages downstream will be in danger. We have been pleading for permanent solutions, but only temporary measures have been taken. Now, we are paying the price. Every year, erosion eats away our land, but the govt only reacts when disaster strikes. We need long-term solutions like reinforced embankments and dredging," said Mukut Hazarika, a local community leader.
Local residents have appealed to the water resources department and district administration for immediate anti-erosion measures."We need immediate intervention from the authorities. Even an hour's delay means more land lost," a local resident said.

Govt ultimatum to families yet to relocate from Sariska

1 2 Jaipur: The Sariska Tiger Reserve administration has served a final, 15-day ultimatum to several villages, resident of which did not vacate the forest area despite accepting compensation as part of a relocation package. Families who accepted the first and second instalments of the compensation package but continue to reside inside the reserve will now face legal action if they do not relocate within the stipulated period. The decision was taken during a meeting of the district implementation committee, chaired by Alwar district collector, who met at the office of Sariska's deputy conservator of forests earlier this week. "Relocation under the Sariska Tiger Project is voluntary, and compensation is provided only after written consent from affected families. However, 49 families from Haripura, Deori, and Karaska villages, along with some from Nathusar, have not shifted despite accepting compensation. Legal proceedings will be initiated if they fail to comply," an official said. To ensure minimal disruption to education of children from relocated families, the administration approved the construction of a new govt primary school in the Tijara Rundh area, with work set to begin soon. The district collector directed officials to expedite the process. A source said that identifying suitable land for further relocation remains a challenge. While 10,000 hectares were earmarked in the Rajgarh area, much of it is rocky and unsuitable for habitation. Authorities are now exploring alternative sites in the Dangarwada and Givawada regions. Villages like Loj and Nathusar, now under the newly formed Kotputli-Behror district, will continue to be managed by the existing relocation committee. "As per state directives, priority in land allotment will be given to families displaced for over three years. Additionally, 368.5 hectares of forest land were approved for de-reservation and identified as a potential resettlement zone," the official added.

Animals up for adoption at Tata zoo

Jamshedpur: Animal lovers keen to become wildlife guardians can adopt tigers, lions, leopards, crocodiles, and birds at the Tata Steel Zoological Park, popularly known as Tata Zoo. Fostering a personal connection with the animal, the zoo management designed an adoption programme for individuals, which was launched in June. The corporate adoption programme has been in place for some time. The adoption covers feed, maintenance, and veterinary care, ensuring the well-being of the animal species. However, the daily care of the adopted animals will be managed by the zoo officials. "The adoption programme will help in our ongoing conservation initiatives. Besides, the programme aims to foster a personal connection between the guardian and the chosen animal," said Tata Zoo deputy director, Naim Akhtar. Enthusiasts can adopt an animal by donating money ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakh and above for a period of one year or five years. Enthusiasts will be entertained on a first-come, first-served basis for the big cat species, as well as other animals that are currently fewer in number. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Furthermore, prospective guardians can adopt more than one animal at any given time. People who adopt an animal can enjoy free visits to the zoo with their family and spend time connecting with their chosen resident animal. Besides, the adoption programme provides donors access to unique experiences and special recognitions. Tata Zoo is home to over 400 animals representing 50 different species, including mammals, birds, and reptiles. In April this year, the zoo inaugurated a glass enclosure for the animals, which is drawing crowds in numbers.
