Time of India12-07-2025
Tata Steel
completed its first paperless import transaction under a Letter of Credit, fully backed by digital processes, the company announced on Friday. The company carried out first digitized import shipment of
coal
using an
Electronic Bill of Lading
(eB/L) with full bank integration.
In its efforts towards fully digitised and sustainable global trade, the company used eB/L for its coal import shipment from
Queensland
, Australia to
Dhamra Port
in
Odisha
, India.
The transaction, backed by digital platform provider ICE Digital Trade's eBL solution, involved coordination between Tata
Steel
India,
ICICI Bank
, TS Global Procurement, and Standard Chartered Bank (Singapore).
Electronic Bill of Lading (eB/L) is a digital version of the traditional paper document used in global shipping.
Tata Steel aims to make its
supply chain
eco-friendly, as a step to fulfil its sustainability objective of achieving Net Zero by 2045.

"This is a big step forward in making our supply chain smarter and more eco-friendly. By embracing eB/L, we are cutting through traditional bottlenecks and setting a new standard for how goods move globally. It reflects our commitment to building a supply chain that is not just efficient and secure, but also environmentally responsible," said Peeyush Gupta, Vice President - TQM, GSP & Supply Chain, Tata Steel.
The digital transaction in imports and exports enables faster access to documents and higher compliance, the company said.
'This successful integration of banks and digital documentation marks a leap in trade finance. It enables faster access to documents, brings efficiency, and ensures higher compliance - everything a modern finance ecosystem needs," said Sandeep Bhattacharya, Vice President - Financial Control & Business Analytics, Tata Steel.
By removing the need for physical courier services and paperwork, the new system significantly speeds up documentation and reduces risks.
The company is taking several measures towards digitisation and environmental sustainability as it executed a blockchain-enabled, paperless trade transaction of steel export to a customer in UAE in 2021. Later in the year in November, the Company executed a blockchain-enabled paperless export order with a metals major in Bangladesh.
Banks play a significant role in such transactions as overseas tech-enabled transactions pave the way for future
foreign trade
.
'The eB/L solution represents ICICI Bank's commitment to transform international trade through technology-driven innovation and strategic global partnerships, while adhering to industry-standard compliance. This is also part of our journey from Bank-to- Bank Tech—an evolution from a traditional bank to a tech-led Bank Tech institution," said Anubhuti Sanghai, Head of Transaction Banking, ICICI Bank.
Digitisation of trade finance reduces timelines, eliminates risks and improves transparency in the process.
'The success of this landmark transaction marks a significant milestone in the digitisation of trade finance, significantly reducing timelines, eliminating risks and improving transparency. This achievement underscores our commitment to driving innovation and efficiency in global trade, while delivering greater speed, security and transparency to clients," said Maisie Chong, Global Head, Standard Chartered Bank.
Tata Steel is working on more blockchain-based paperless transactions in geographies like Bangladesh, Europe, and the Middle East covering three different shipment modes - Road, Breakbulk, and Containers.

Trump's tariffs won't hurt our domestic biz: Tata Steel VP

Jamshedpur: Recent US trade tariffs on India will not hurt the domestic business of Tata Steel. However, enhanced tariffs on European goods will potentially impact the steel business of the company in Europe, Tata Steel vice-president (corporate services) D B Sundara Ramam said. The VP on Friday said the company is evaluating the likely effect of European tariff and will respond accordingly. "With regard to our domestic steel production, the company plans to improve cost efficiency and increase productivity," Ramam said. The Donald Trump regime has imposed a 50% country-specific tariff on most Indian goods and a US tariff ceiling of 15% for European Union (EU) goods, respectively. Further, the VP said that the company is keen to provide municipal facilities beyond the command limits of the company so that people avail better civic amenities in the non-command areas too. "Tata Steel lease area is reduced to 45 sq km from 64 sq km radius. However, we aim to provide good civic facilities to the people beyond the lease area jurisdiction so that everybody avails better municipal services," Ramam said. Ramam said sanitation, waste management, better road connectivity, among other facilities, remain the priority of the company for the city. The week in charts: Inflation relief, oil switch, Perplexity's offer for Chrome

From India's retail inflation hitting an eight-year low in July, plans to divest stakes in public sector banks, the revision in minimum monthly balance requirement by ICICI Bank, to Perplexity's bid to purchase Chrome, here are this week's news in numbers. Inflation relief India's retail inflation fell to 1.55% in July, the lowest in eight years, from 2.10% the previous month. The decline was driven mainly by falling food prices, with food recording a deflation of 1.76%. With this, inflation has come in below the lower bound of the Reserve Bank of India's 2-6% target range for the first time since June 2017. While generally such low print would raise fears of weak demand, economists expect an uptick from August itself. And as per RBI's projections, inflation may rise above 4% by the fourth quarter of the current fiscal year. High stakes The Centre plans to pare its stakes in Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and some public sector banks (PSBs) beyond Sebi's minimum public shareholding requirement to raise funds, while retaining majority control, Mint reported. Merchant bankers will be appointed for up to five years to execute phased stake sales, mainly via qualified institutional placements (QIP). The government currently holds 96.5% in LIC, after a 3.5% stake sale through initial public offer (IPO) three years ago. The government needs to cut its stakes in five PSBs to below 75% by August 2026. Backing down ₹15,000: This is the latest minimum monthly average balance required for ICICI Bank savings accounts in urban and metro areas. The revised balance comes after strong backlash over a recent hike in urban requirement to ₹50,000. For new accounts starting from 1 August, the requirement will be ₹7,500 in semi-urban areas and ₹2,500 in rural areas, while older accounts will continue to follow existing rules, Mint reported. Non-maintenance will incur a penalty of 6% of the shortfall or ₹500, whichever is lower. Trade strain India is caught between fresh US tariffs of up to 50% and long-standing ties with Russia. India, which imported $50.2 billion worth of oil from Russia in FY25, is looking to pivot to the Gulf amid the tariff and sanction threats, Mint reported. Experts believe a switch from Russian oil can be done with little cost. Russia has not been a traditional oil import partner to India and seen increased dependence post the war with Ukraine. However, the oil refiners may face lower diesel yields and higher expenses. Roll revision The Election Commission of India, known for its motto 'no voter to be left behind", faces scrutiny after over 6.5 million voters—8.3% of Bihar's total—were deleted in first phase of special intensive revision (SIR) ahead of state polls. Many of the districts that saw huge roll revisions had seen small victory margins in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Activists and politicians have raised questions over the rushed exercise and also alleged large-scale voter fraud in other states. The ECI has assured no voters will be deleted without notice. Perplexity's bid $34.5 billion: That's the bid AI search engine Perplexity has made for Chrome, the world's most popular browser with over 3 billion users, Mint reported. Perplexity was valued at only $18 billion as of July, according to Bloomberg, raising questions over the bid size. Google isn't selling yet, but US antitrust proceedings could force parent Alphabet to divest it. Perplexity, far smaller with 15 million users, wants Chrome to leapfrog in the AI search race and tap its vast browsing data. OpenAI, Yahoo, and Apollo have also expressed interest in acquiring Chrome if Google is forced to divest. UPI's dominance A sneak peek into India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) habits shows that groceries and supermarkets witnessed the highest transactions among different categories, with over 3 billion transactions in July 2025. Fast food outlets ranked second with 1.2 billion payments, followed closely by restaurants at 1.15 billion. While UPI's dominance in digital transactions is already known, this is the first time detailed category-wise data has been released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Data rewind: Tryst with culture Even after 78 years, Jawaharlal Nehru 'Tryst with Destiny' speech delivered on the eve of India's independence remains alive in the country's memory. Considered one of the best speeches of 20th century, it has found a reference in movies, books, and even inspired a Grammy-winning composition. As regulatory curbs seem to ease fintechs bet on festive spark in unsecured lending play

Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills ETtech The digital lending sector is anticipating a turnaround in FY26, after more than a year of a slowdown amid growth pangs, expecting the coming festive season to trigger a revival of the unsecured credit insiders across fintechs like BharatPe, and Paytm , and traditional lenders like Poonawala Fincorp and L&T Finance said the regulatory clampdown on unsecured lending in 2024 and early 2025 is showing signs of ebbing. This is encouraging large banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) who typically co-lend with fintechs to slowly open up to unsecured credit.'We will power our consumer lending play primarily with our own NBFC, and we are currently getting our internal systems right, so that once the festive season comes, we can quickly scale up disbursals,' said Nalin Negi, chief executive officer, BharatPe. The New Delhi-based fintech, which is mainly into merchant lending, is preparing to grow its consumer lending business. BharatPe owns around 74% in Trillionloans, a registered One97 Communications , which runs Paytm, showed a strong growth in its financial services business in the June quarter, primarily driven by unsecured merchant and consumer insiders believe that the stress in the unsecured sector has bottomed out and are expecting a return to growth in the coming months. They, however, noted that it will not be a rapid recovery since rate cuts by the central bank always take time to its March quarter analyst call, Paytm also spoke about positivity around consumer lending business. 'It does feel like that we are towards the bottom of what our potential is on that platform… maybe 6 or 12 months from now, we'll be getting a lot more monetisation out of that,' said Madhur Deora, chief financial officer at sentiments are being echoed by top executives at large NBFCs. Firms like Poonawala Fincorp and L&T Finance, which work with fintechs like PhonePe, Paytm, and Amazon to power their unsecured lending business, reported growth in the June quarter and issued a positive outlook for the rest of the fiscal year.'I do believe that the situation in the market is slowly improving, the sort of the mini cycle we saw in some asset classes, especially unsecured and microfinance, are showing signs of dissipation,' said Sudipto Roy, chief executive officer, L&T Finance. 'I think it will take another two quarters for the industry to see full dissipation.''H2 will be very, very good, especially starting with the festive season and in Q4 (FY26),' Roy sector entered into the slow lane following the Reserve Bank of India's November 2023 diktat on increasing the risk weightage on unsecured personal loans by 25 basis points. As banks and NBFCs slowed their unsecured lending business, fintechs suffered as such loans contributed to most of their an April 2025 note, credit rating agency Icra said it expects Rs 19-20.5 lakh crore in incremental credit expansion this fiscal, an increase of nearly 10.8%. Digital lenders are hoping to grab a substantial chunk of this growth opportunity.A senior executive at an NBFC pointed out that lenders are in the business of risk and they avert lending for a prolonged period of time. But risk weights are being revisited, and growth will be through enough caution.'We are getting enquiries for partnerships both from fintechs who want to work with our NBFC and from lenders who want to source through our app, but we have to recalibrate this business, pricing, tenure, volumes and others,' said Negi at BharatPe.
