China's carmakers are resorting to tricks to inflate their vehicle sales and Beijing has had enough
Beijing warned the practice of selling new cars with zero miles at a sharp discount in the used car market is just the latest example of 'involution', when domestic companies drag themselves down collectively in a race to the bottom.
China's ruling Communist Party has warned domestic carmakers to stop using sales-boosting tricks—or risk triggering a vicious cycle that could drag down the entire industry.
On Tuesday, the CCP organ People's Daily took on the practice of selling new cars as used on the cheap through so-called 'zero mileage' discounting.
'This disguised form of price cutting disrupts normal market order and is a striking example of the auto industry's 'involution',' the daily argued on Tuesday, according to a translation provided by Reuters.
Involution, or neijuan, is a buzzword that describes a pointless, resource-expending endeavor like spinning on a hamster wheel. But more recently it has come to refer to Beijing's unhappiness its domestic champions weakening themselves by competing in a race to the bottom.
'Once market competition rules are properly enforced, 'zero-mileage used cars' wont be able to run far — or for long,' it continued.
Stuffing the sales channel full with nearly new cars at discounted prices is nothing unique to China. The industry has long maintained a practice called pre-registrations where dealers would offer discounted vehicles with extremely low or even symbolic mileage to offload slower moving stock and reach sales targets.
But China appears to have taken the practice to an extreme, ridding itself of this fig leaf of symbolic mileage amid a raging price war that is already halfway through its third year.
The primary culprit right now is BYD, the country's largest carmaker, which has been slashing prices at a brutal rate, forcing other competitors to either follow suit or lose market share. Late last month it reduced prices across a number of the the starting price of its cheapest model, the Seagull EV hatchback, to the equivalent of $7,800 from nearly $10,000 previously. BYD could not be reached by Fortune for comment.
Typically once the industry conditions consumers to expect price cuts, it can create a vicious circle as buyers wait on the sidelines for better deals. Over time it becomes increasingly hard to wean them off discounts.
The price war results from years of overinvestment in the car industry, where privately owned companies such as BYD and Geely compete alongside industry newcomers like consumer electronics giant Xiaomi as well as a host of state-owned rivals.
The latter often see political interests promoted over market forces at the cost of profits. These include the central government's First Automobile Works (FAW) and Dongfeng, as well as peers like Shanghai's SAIC and Guangdong's GAC that are controlled by their municipal or provincial party leaders.
With all these players jockeying for enough of a share to reach critical scale, China now has the estimated installed capacity across to build nearly 50 million cars a year, or twice as many as the industry can sell domestically. All these superfluous fixed costs put enormous pressure on carmakers to boost sales volumes at almost any price just to eke out an existence.
Last July, consultancy Alix Partners predicted a shake-out in the Chinese car industry currently featuring 137 electric vehicle brands. Only one out of every seven will be profitable by the end of the decade, it concluded.

Xiaomi SU7 Ultra Shattered Rimac's Nurburgring Lap Record
Chinese electric cars have been on the lips of Western automaking rivals for quite some time. The rise of companies like BYD, Zeekr, and NIO has put the auto market on watch in recent years for their low-priced cars loaded with extensive tech and luxury features. However, one company that stood out as the odd one was consumer electronics giant Xiaomi. The company, known for its smartphones and wearables, launched its first car in March 2024-a $30,000 supercar-styled electric sports sedan called the SU7. Throughout 2024, the SU7 became one of China's hot-selling vehicles, delivering more than 135,000 units last year, including one used by Ford CEO Jim Farley, who admitted he "couldn't give it up" during an October 2024 podcast appearance. The success of the SU7 has led the tech giant to go all-in on a high-performance version called the Ultra. Last October, the company published a video showing a stripped-down, race-ready SU7 Ultra prototype lapping the Nürburgring in just 6 minutes and 46.8 seconds, faster than more expensive EVs like the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and even the multi-million dollar Rimac Nevera. Although Xiaomi recorded 3,680 pre-orders in just 10 minutes when the website opened on October 29 last year, unfortunately, the SU7 Ultra that consumers got was far less racecar-like than the prototype that lapped the Ring. It featured Alcantara-trimmed seats and far less aggressive aerodynamics, including a prominent rear wing, a functional front splitter, and enlarged air intakes for the car's upgraded cooling package. However, in a new video released by Xiaomi on its social media channels, the consumer-grade, production version of the SU7 Ultra shattered Nurburgring lap records by securing the title of fastest production EV to lap the Green Hell, posting a verified lap time of 7:04.957. Although the production SU7 Ultra's lap time is approximately 18 seconds slower than the stripped-down, race-ready prototype, it still outperformed some more prestigious and expensive rivals. The $74,000 SU7 Ultra's flying lap not only surpassed the $231,100 Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, which recorded a time of 7:07.55, but it also beat the multi-million dollar Rimac Nevera, which previously held the production car lap record with a time of 7:05.298. According to Xiaomi, the SU7 Ultra is powered by a trio of electric motors producing 1,526 horsepower. The automaker claims that the SU7 Ultra can go from 0 to 60 in just 1.98 seconds and has a top speed of 217 miles per hour. In the video of the record lap, the SU7 is shown reaching 345 km/h, or 214 mph, on the long straight before the final corner of the Nordschleife. In a translated post on Weibo, Xiaomi founder, chairman, and CEO Lei Jun noted that the car used in the video was piloted by Vincent Radermecker and used the optional "professional track package." According to the Xiaomi website, the optional package includes a smattering of racing-grade goodies from a lion's den of aftermarket suppliers, including Bilstein EVO R coilover shock absorbers specially developed for the Ultra, ENDLESS high-performance brake pads, Pirelli P ZERO fifth-generation high-performance tires, an additional set of Pirelli P ZERO TROFEO RS semi-slick tires, as well as 21-inch U-shaped forged wheel hubs, carbon fiber rear wheel arches, and a carbon fiber roof. In his post on Chinese social media, the Xiaomi figurehead noted that this won't be the last time the SU7 Ultra will post a Ring time. "I believe that this record will be broken in the near future," Jun said, translated from Chinese. "We will stay in the Nürburgring for a long time, and make progress together with the world's top peers in the pinnacle of the global automotive industry!" Although Xiaomi's time is a far cry from the Mercedes-AMG One's record for the fastest production vehicle of 6 minutes and 29 seconds, it really shows that a country that has been written off as making low-quality, disposable things in general has the capability to disrupt, and as what we seen so far, they are doing more than just knocking down doors and walls; they're building a new house on the old lot. It will be very interesting to see if a rebuttal in the form of a potentially faster car will emerge from any of the Western "old guard." Tesla, Porsche, Rimac, the ball is in your court. Bad news for Tesla: Britain is going bonkers for Chinese cars
Sales of BYD and other Chinese EVs are surging in tariff-free UK, even as Tesla's plummet. One analyst told BI it's proof that in a straight fight, BYD can quickly take market share from legacy automakers. The US imposed 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs last year, and Elon Musk warned that they could "demolish" Western rivals. Tesla might be safe from Chinese EV competition in the US — but across the Atlantic in the UK, China's automakers are booming. Sales of Chinese cars have surged this year in Britain, even as Tesla's sales have cratered, with the likes of BYD growing at enormous speed in the tariff-free market. According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, vehicles manufactured in China made up 9.4% of all UK sales in May, up from 7.7% in April, and up from 5.5% in May 2024. The surge was driven by BYD. The Chinese EV giant recorded a 400% rise in sales from a year earlier, while Polestar, which is owned by Chinese conglomerate Geely, saw its sales spike by nearly 300%. In contrast to its Chinese rivals, Tesla, which is battling a global sales slump amid protests and backlash against CEO Elon Musk's political interventions, saw its sales collapse 36% in the UK in May. Unlike the US and Europe, the UK has not imposed tariffs on Chinese EVs, and JATO Dynamics analyst Felipe Munoz told Business Insider that the lack of import taxes made the UK a "free market" for Chinese carmakers. In the US, Chinese electric cars were hit with a 100% tariff last year, while the European Union has imposed import taxes of up to 35% on specific manufacturers, with BYD facing a 17% tariff. Munoz said the growing popularity of Chinese cars in the UK offers evidence that the likes of BYD can quickly take market share from Tesla and legacy automakers. "It's sending a message to the legacy carmakers, Tesla and many others, that the Chinese can gain market share very easily, because their cars are very competitive compared to what you see in the legacy carmakers," said Munoz. Munoz said Chinese-controlled firms like BYD and MG, a historic British brand now owned by Chinese company SAIC, had achieved success in the UK by offering a broad spectrum of new models, including both EVs and plug-in hybrids. He added that BYD was introducing new, high-quality models at such competitive prices so quickly in the UK that it was outweighing the lack of brand awareness that usually limits the growth of carmakers when they enter a new market. BYD's cheapest model in the UK, the Dolphin Surf hatchback, is expected to cost around £18,000 ($24,500) when it goes on sale this week, more than £20,000 ($27,000) less than the starting price of Tesla's Model 3. While Tesla sales slumped, US automaker did manage to outsell Jaecoo and Omoda, two relatively unknown Chinese brands that beat Tesla in April, but lagged behind BYD and MG. Tesla's struggles in the UK are a dire warning for the company as it faces growing competition from Chinese carmakers around the globe. The rapid rise of BYD and its rivals has sent shockwaves throughout the auto industry, with Chinese carmakers putting Western and Japanese carmakers in China under severe pressure with a wave of affordable, high-tech electric and hybrid cars. Now, many of those Chinese automakers are eyeing global expansion, with BYD vowing to sell half of its cars overseas by 2030, according to a recent report from Reuters. Musk himself warned last year that without trade barriers, Chinese carmakers would "demolish" their Western rivals — and what's happening in the UK seems to be proving him right. Ultimately, Munoz said the growing popularity of Chinese cars in the UK offers evidence that, in a straight fight, the likes of BYD can quickly take market share from Tesla and legacy automakers. The analyst said that while tariffs would slow BYD and its rivals down, it was unlikely to stop them entirely. Munoz pointed to BYD's growing sales in Europe, where the brand has adapted its strategy to deal with the EU's 17% tariff by selling more hybrid cars, which are exempt from tariffs. "With or without tariffs, these guys are coming. The tariffs are not going to stop them," he said.
