Thai Airways' share price surges after trading resumption

CNAa day ago
BANGKOK :Thai Airways International's stock price surged as much as 231 per cent after shares in the airline resumed trading on Monday before falling back later in the morning.
The stock was up 186 per cent at 9.5 baht ($0.2872) at 12:50 p.m. (0550 GMT). The national carrier went into bankruptcy-protected restructuring in 2020 at the onset of the pandemic.
The airline had been in trouble well before the pandemic, reporting losses nearly every year since 2012 after low-cost carriers eroded its market share, especially in short haul routes in Southeast Asia.
When COVID struck, Thai Airways was granted bankrupt-protected debt restructuring worth 400 billion baht. It brought in top executives for its restructuring committee chaired by former energy minister Piyasvasti Amranand, who was also the company's chief executive in 2009 to 2012 when it was profitable.
The committee launched debt to equity plans and went on to slash half of its support staff to 16,000. It also initiated plans to cut its fleet from 103 to 85 aircraft and shed its budget carrier, Thai Smile.
Over five years from 2020, the airline reduced its debt to 190 billion baht and reported operational profits in 2023. In the first quarter of this year, net profits reached $9.8 billion, up 300 per cent from the the same period last year.
It currently flies 78 jets and reported a cabin factor - the percentage of seats filled with passengers - of 83.3 per cent.
Last year, the carrier ordered 45 Boeing 787-9 wide-body jets with an option for 35 more. In July, it said it could exercise the option as part of Thailand's tariff negotiations with the United States.

Two men charged over GST fraud involving S$181 million in allegedly fake sales

SINGAPORE: Two men were charged in court on Tuesday (Aug 5) over their alleged involvement in Goods and Services Tax (GST) "missing trader fraud", involving about S$181 million (US$140 million) in fictitious sales. Missing trader fraud happens when a seller collects GST from sales but does not pay the tax to Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS). The seller is known as the missing trader. Meanwhile, businesses further down the supply chain continue to claim refunds from IRAS for the GST paid on their purchases. Derrick Yeo Wei Kin, 40, and Yeo Kian Huat, 73, are believed to have set up four shell companies and used them to operate a fraudulent business between November 2017 and April 2018. It is not clear if the men are related. According to a police statement, the men allegedly sold goods from one company to the other companies at inflated prices amounting to about S$181 million. The sales and purchases among the companies are believed to be sham transactions created to allow the men to claim GST from IRAS. The younger Yeo allegedly submitted three fraudulent GST refund claims to IRAS in an attempt to cheat the authority into disbursing S$11.8 million. He also allegedly forged a supplier's invoice and submitted it to IRAS so that the authority would approve the GST registration application of one of the shell companies. He also purportedly made fraudulent GST refund claims under the electronic tourist refund scheme by deceiving IRAS into disbursing GST cash refunds of more than $140,000 when there were no such purchases under the scheme. The two Singaporeans received four charges each of fraudulent trading under the Companies Act. Asked for their position on the charges, the younger Yeo said: "I'm not guilty". The older Yeo said he would be "claiming trial". The men were unrepresented and the younger Yeo has several other charges already tendered against him before this development. The cases were adjourned for pre-trial conferences.

Amazon overhauls Wondery podcast studio, cuts 110 jobs

is restructuring the Wondery podcast studio by shifting its award-winning narrative podcasts such as "Business Wars" to Audible and consolidating creator-led shows into a new unit, according to a memo seen by Reuters. About 110 employees will be laid off as part of the process, while many Wondery employees will transition to other parts of Amazon, the company said in an emailed statement on Monday. Wondery CEO Jen Sargent will depart the company following a transition period, the memo said. Intense competition in the expensive podcast industry as well as a growing focus on creator-led video content have prompted audio streaming companies including Spotify to diversify their podcasts as they look to lower costs and attract more users to their platforms. "As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series," Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch and games at Amazon, wrote in the memo. Wondery was acquired by Amazon in 2021 and has seen podcast revenue quadruple since then as the studio expanded its slate to include video podcasts and creator-driven series, according to the memo. Under the new structure, Wondery's narrative podcast studio - home to shows such as "Dr. Death" and "American Scandal" - along with the Wondery+ subscription service, will move to Audible, the e-commerce giant's audio platform. Its creator-focused podcast team that produces shows including "Mind the Game", "New Heights", and "Armchair Expert" will join a new Creator Services group within Amazon's Talent Services division. This new team will continue to operate the creator-focused podcast studio under the Wondery brand. "By making these changes, we can better support creators in monetizing their content across multiple channels," Amazon said.
