Egypt awards int'l energy companies 6 exploration blocks expecting $245 mln in investment
The move, announced by the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), will see at least 13 new wells drilled across the Mediterranean Sea, the Nile Delta, and North Sinai.
This marks a significant step toward boosting domestic energy production and attracting international interest.
The ministry said the action is part of its plan and strategy to attract new investments in exploration and support ongoing efforts to increase production.
These blocks comprise four offshore Mediterranean blocks offered as part of the 2024 global bid round on the Egypt Upstream Gateway and two onshore blocks in the Nile Delta and North Sinai.
The blocks and companies are as follows:
** The North Semonian Offshore and North West Atoll Offshore blocks were awarded to the Chevron Egypt and BG (Shell) consortium, with two exploration wells planned in each block.
** The North Ras El-Teen Offshore block was awarded to IEOC Production (Eni), with three exploration wells planned.
** The East Alexandria Offshore block was awarded to Cheiron Egypt, with three exploration wells planned.
** The North Tanta Onshore block in the Nile Delta was awarded to IPR, which plans to drill two exploration wells.
**The Al-Fayrouz Onshore block in North Sinai was awarded to Perenco, which plans to conduct a 3D seismic survey and drill one exploration well.
A diverse range of blocks, including several underexplored offshore fields in the Mediterranean, are still available on the Egypt Upstream Gateway (EUG) for additional investment opportunities.
Bidding for these blocks will close on 2 July 2025, and the results will be announced after the round closes and bids are received.

Egypt has not signed a new agreement to import gas from Israel, Moataz Atef, a spokesman for the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, said, noting that the deal is an extension of an existing agreement from 2019. Atef said the extension is part of a two-pronged strategy to boost domestic gas and petroleum production while diversifying energy sources to strengthen Egypt's role as a regional energy hub. His comments were the first official response since Israeli firm NewMed Energy announced what it called a 'landmark deal' on Thursday. The consortium said the agreement would export 130 billion cubic metres of gas to Egypt through 2040, valued at an estimated $35 billion. Atef stressed the figure was not final, citing a flexible pricing formula tied to market conditions. The extended contract, he said, would guarantee a stable supply and support Egypt's energy security during 'a period of rapid geopolitical change.' 'It is in our best interest. If we need the gas, that's fine; if not, that's also fine,' he said. 'The priority is strategic insurance.' He noted Egypt had also signed a gas export agreement with Cyprus in February 2025 and was pursuing other eastern Mediterranean deals, aiming to balance domestic needs with surplus for export. The extension was signed with Blue Ocean Energy, which buys gas from Israel's Leviathan reservoir for Egypt. Gas from Leviathan began flowing to Egypt shortly after production started in January 2020, and under the new terms, is expected to continue until 2040 or until contracted volumes are met. No new natural gas agreement with Israel, says Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum
The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said that recent reports regarding the signing of a new gas supply agreement between Egypt and Israel are inaccurate. The ministry stated that this is an amendment to a previous agreement signed in 2019, and not a new deal as claimed. NewMed, a partner in Israel's Leviathan natural gas field, announced the signing of the largest export agreement in Israel's history, providing Egypt with gas worth up to US$35 billion. The Ministry's official spokesperson, Moataz Atef, explained, during a phone call with Sada al-Balad TV channel on Friday that the primary goal of this amendment is to maximize the use of energy sources and diversify them. Amending this agreement with Israel falls under a comprehensive vision aimed at ensuring Egypt's energy security until 2040, he explained, as the state is also working on long-term contracts for strategic guarantee of supply, and the figure being circulated is not final. Atef added that Egypt is striving to become a regional energy hub in the Middle East. Egypt has signed several agreements with various countries such as Cyprus over the past few years, he said, to supply natural gas, achieving the desired balance between domestic consumption and exporting the surplus to foreign markets. Egyptian Petroleum Minister inspects ‘Energos Force' FSRU in Jordan
Egypt's Petroleum Minister has inspected the start of operational trials for a new floating gas terminal in Jordan's port of Aqaba, a facility set to secure energy supplies for both countries by feeding imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) into the shared Arab Gas Pipeline, the ministry said. In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said Minister Karim Badawi and his Jordanian counterpart, Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, toured the 'Energos Force' floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), which arrived in Aqaba earlier this month. The vessel will receive imported LNG shipments, convert the liquid fuel back into gas, and pump it into the Arab Gas Pipeline to meet consumption needs in both countries and respond effectively to any emergencies. 'The 'Energos Force' FSRU will have a positive impact on securing gas supplies for various sectors in both Egypt and Jordan,' Badawy said in the statement. 'The vessel has a capacity of about 750 million cubic feet per day, and the necessary quantities will be determined according to the actual needs of the two countries.' Badawy stressed the importance of joint cooperation in the natural gas sector, highlighting the integration achieved through the Arab Gas Pipeline and the utilisation of infrastructure in both countries, such as ports and FSRUs. He noted that the cooperation reflects the strong bilateral relations supported by the political leadership of both nations. The Jordanian energy minister, Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, said the FSRU has a strategic dimension and is an extension of the close cooperation between the two countries, especially in natural gas. The two ministers also visited a gas compressor station and the main control centre for the Arab Gas Pipeline in Aqaba, where they were briefed on the facility's operations and control systems. The statement noted the continuous coordination and cooperation between the control centre in Aqaba and the national gas grid's main control centre in Cairo to ensure operational efficiency in both countries.
