India's total services exports rose by 13.6% to $387.5 billion in FY 2024-25, out of which, exports to the U.S. reached $33.2 billion; led by IT-enabled services ($20 billion), professional services ($10 billion), and BFSI (banking, financial services, and insurance) exports ($2 billion). Conversely, the U.S. exported $25.9 billion in services to India with a surplus of $102 million, primarily from exports in finance and consulting.
The digital services sector in particular reflects a symbiotic relationship between the two countries. India today is the third largest start-up hub and one of the leading countries in global SaaS businesses. There is a deep organic relation between Indian and US tech businesses, with 60% of total investments in Indian start-ups in 2020 coming from US investors. Overall, US investors were part of 75% of the deals, followed by Singapore based investors (15%) and Japanese investors (10%). Moreover, major global US tech businesses like Alphabet and Meta have increased their presence in India, making it their second base (or base for their Asia operations) for much of their product development and marketing activities.

Friction Points: Tariffs, Taxes, and Technological Tensions
Unfortunately, it has not been smooth sailing for the BTA as2025 has brought fresh headwinds. In April, the U.S. introduced a reciprocal 26% tariff aimed at select sectors—primarily tech and electronics. India's recent decision to remove its 6% equalization levy (digital services tax) was seen as a conciliatory gesture in support of the BTA process, but teething problems still remain.
For instance, fundamental differences in data protection frameworks—India's more state-centered model vs. the U.S.' consumer and market-driven approach— are roadblocks.Reportedly, bilateral e-commerce trade reached $15 billion in 2024, but DPDPA compliance costs $500 million yearly for IT exporters. Alignment could boost trade by 15% ($2.25 billion) by 2030.
Visa policy is another sore point. Current visa caps cost $800 million in losses and BFSI exports face U.S. regulatory barriers. A WTO study suggests negotiating a 20% increase in
H-1B visa quotas
could grow India's $10 billion Mode 4 exports by $5 billion, while reciprocal BFSI market access could triple India's $2 billion BFSI exports by 2030.
Addressing the dragon in the room
Much of these hurdles exist because historically India and USA have often perceived each other as competitors in digital technology and services. However, the BTA finds utility when both countries face a bigger challenge in the form of China.
The National Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technologies (2020) by USA recognises China as a major threat in the field of technology. The US is actively seeking to de-couple from China on all fronts; from manufacturing to new technologies.
Much of the initial phase of the Indian tech start-up ecosystem was developed by investments from Chinese sources such as Alibaba, Tencent or Didi Chuxing. However, over time there has been a conscious shift by the Indian Government to decouple from Chinese influence which also involved banning certain Chinese service providers.
Chinese technology firms are aggressively expanding into Latin America and Africa, offering bundled solutions, low-cost hardware, and subsidized services. China is also fast emerging as a major tech innovator in the new-age technologies such as AI. These developments threaten business interests of both India and USA.
India and USA signed a critical treaty under the previous US Administration in the form of United States–India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET), that sought to leverage complementarities between the two countries in the fields of AI, quantum computing, semiconductors and wireless telecommunications. This initiative, which is critical for both countries to counter the Chinese developments, now needs to be fostered by a BTA that helps realise the stated objectives.
Fresh Perspective for the BTA: from competitors to allies
The Indo US BTA between the global leaders in the services is no more about turf war between competitors. It is now more about geofencing out the competition from China. Businesses are presently more allied to the idea (as is evident from the degrees of integration); the authorities need to foster it.

Kinetic launches DX e-scooter starting at ₹1.11 lakh
Marking a significant comeback in the Indian two-wheeler market, Kinetic Engineering Ltd . (KEL) on Monday launched the Kinetic DX EV, an electric version of its iconic DX scooter from the 1990s. Developed and manufactured by its electric vehicle arm Kinetic Watts and Volts , DX EV is available in two variants — DX and DX+, priced at ₹1,11,499 and ₹1,17,499 (ex-showroom, Pune), respectively. Bookings are now open on the company's official website, with a refundable booking amount of ₹1,000. According to the company's statement, deliveries will begin in September 2025, with bookings limited to 35,000 units. It is co-developed with Italian designers and comes integrated with segment-first features such as Kinetic Assist, voice alerts, and Easy Flip pillion footrest. The company said DX EV's key highlight is its 37-litre under-seat storage, which it claims is the largest in its class, capable of holding two helmets and additional essentials. 'The legendary Kinetic DX earned a permanent place in the hearts of millions,' said Ajinkya Firodia, Vice Chairman, Kinetic India. 'Reviving this icon was about reintroducing reliability and innovation in a future-ready format. The new DX marks the beginning of a bold new chapter for Kinetic and for India's electric mobility landscape.' Performance and features DX+ is powered by a 2.6 kWh LFP battery (supplied by Range-X) and delivers an IDC range of 116 km and a top speed of 90 kmph. It also features K-Coast regenerative technology, a 60V system, and three riding modes — Range, Power, and Turbo. The scooter comes equipped with a BLDC hub motor producing 4.8 kW peak power, 220mm front disc brake, telescopic front suspension, adjustable rear shock absorbers, and combi-braking system. While the DX+ will be available in five colours — Red, Blue, White, Silver, and Black — the DX variant will come in Silver and Black. The e-scooter will be manufactured at Kinetic's facility in Pune. The company has already infused ₹72 crore into its EV business and committed an additional ₹177 crore for scaling up the DX platform.

Should auto stocks be on radar? How to play defence stocks? Amnish Aggarwal explains
Amnish Aggarwal, Head, Research, Prabhudas Lilladher, says defence stocks experienced a sharp rally post Operation Sindoor, but fundamentals may take time to catch up. Auto sector performance will be stock-specific, influenced by international deals and the India-US agreement. Domestically, Eicher Motors in two-wheelers and M&M in PVs are currently showing strength, with monsoon impact and the upcoming festival season being key factors to watch. ADVERTISEMENT We have seen a range-bound momentum in the Jio Financial stock but on a longer-term picture, there's still conviction on the stock, say experts. What is your view? Amnish Aggarwal: We do not have any numbers on Jio Financial so far, but having said that, Jio Financials in particular is trying to grow big, as has been the case with some of the other ventures of the Reliance group. Now be it in asset management or segments of financial services, as of now, it is in a very nascent stage because they are handling very limited tangible business as of now. So, it is difficult to say with just one-year, two-year numbers. It will take time for the businesses to shape up. Yes, there could be some need for funding as they expand and that can be raised from the markets given the kind of brand equity the group has. News flow is coming in for the auto sector. Do you have any take on the automobile space or have you kept the space in your watch list for now? Amnish Aggarwal: In auto, one needs to be very stock specific because as far as the deal between the European Union, the UK, or the US is concerned, it is not going to impact the entire sector, that is one. Secondly, a lot will depend upon how the India-US deal goes through in terms of exports from many of the Indian companies. As far as the current deal we are going through, it might be beneficial for Tata Motors but not for others. But the mainstay of the Indian auto companies has been the domestic side where, in two- wheelers, it is Eicher Motors and in case of PVs, M&M is actually doing well. With monsoons being good, there could be some momentum there. It is very difficult to give any single point and very difficult to paint everything with the same brush. But having said that for the consumer or the consumption space, all those factors will play for auto whether it is interest rates, tax cuts, inflation and all that stuff which ideally should be positive for having said that, the groundwork is there but one needs to see how in the coming festival season in particular the auto sales go. But if you go by the current numbers, M&M and Eicher are the two stocks which really continue to look good. What about oil marketing, oil exploration, and oil producers? At present, ONGC, HPCL, and IOC are showing signs of sharp upsurge. However, oil refiners are tanking down in trade. Any crude related counters, space, sectors on your radar? Amnish Aggarwal: Due to the benign crude prices, if you look at the oil marketing companies like HPCL, IOC, etc, over the past few months, these stocks have done well and numbers expectations are also built in. So, a lot here will depend on how the crude prices behave. Among oil exploration companies, we have been positive on Oil India in the past. ADVERTISEMENT But, if the oil prices remain benign, then in some of the refining and the marketing companies, the losses will not come from marketing and those counters can see some stability or an upside from here. What is your take on the defence sector? Of late, BEL, Mazagon Dock counters have been lagging behind and they have been seeing a bit of a U-turn from higher levels. Is much of the optimism with respect to their order book, and growth trajectory already in the price and any expectation with respect to BEL? Amnish Aggarwal: Among the defence stocks, particularly after Operation Sindoor, for the next one, one-and-a-half months, there was a very sharp rally in many of these stocks and many of them gave 20-25% return from those levels. Sometimes these stocks go up but the fundamentals take time to catch up. Now, the order books are growing, the growth is there, but the numbers are not going to dramatically change from here. In the long term, these stocks continue to look good whereas in the near term, many of these stocks will move sideways to weak movements and that is a part of what happens naturally with many of the stocks. IPO Mania! Foreign investors prefer public offers even as they sell stocks worth ₹20,000 crore. Here's why
Overseas investors, who typically favour investing in well-established companies, seem to be changing their stance as they actively participate in the primary market. July data shows that although FPIs continue to pull significant funds from the secondary market, they are increasingly preferring IPOs. FPIs remained net sellers through most of July, offloading local equities in 14 out of 19 trading sessions so far and withdrawing a total of ₹ 20,262 crore from the Indian stock market, as per the NSDL data. This trend reflects a tepid start to the June quarter earnings season, which failed to ease valuation concerns, while the strengthening US dollar and rising US Treasury yields have also impacted inflows. The easing of tariff-related concerns and progress in trade deals with major partners are currently supporting the US dollar's strength. Even during the five sessions in which FPIs were net buyers, inflows remained marginal, highlighting their cautious approach toward domestic equities. However, they invested ₹ 13,760 crore in the primary market, which analysts explain is due to lower valuations in IPOs compared to the secondary market. Looking at broader data, FPIs have sold ₹ 1.20 lakh crore worth of Indian stocks through the secondary market so far in the current calendar year but invested ₹ 35,747 crore in the primary market, the NSDL data shows. Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, said, 'The consistent buying by FPIs in the primary market contrasts with their selling through the exchanges. This trend holds true for CY2025 as well. Lower valuations in the primary market and higher valuations in the secondary market explain this paradox.' 'In July, FIIs have been continuous sellers in the IT segment while they were buyers in banking and financial services. Early Q2 results—with strong earnings from major banks and weaker results from IT companies—validate this FPI strategy,' he further added. FPI selling in July has shown little impact on the Indian stock market as domestic institutional investors (DIIs)—largely driven by mutual funds—are actively absorbing the pressure from the FPI sell-off. According to exchange data, DIIs have purchased ₹ 37,687 crore worth of Indian equities in July so far, more than offsetting the FPI outflows. DIIs have remained net buyers since August 2023. In H1 CY26, DIIs bought stocks worth ₹ 3.57 lakh crore, marking the strongest-ever half-yearly inflows. This represents 68% of the full-year inflow of ₹ 5.26 lakh crore recorded in 2024 and is nearly double the ₹ 1.81 lakh crore inflow seen in 2023. DIIs began the year aggressively, buying shares worth ₹ 86,591 crore in January, followed by ₹ 64,853 crore in February. While inflows softened over the next two months, they picked up pace again in May and June, with ₹ 67,642 crore and ₹ 72,673 crore, respectively, largely driven by a surge in block deals.
