Sioux Falls Pride looking for volunteers

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The pride parade and festival in Sioux Falls relies on over 100 volunteers, but around half of those positions still aren't filled. The group is made up of five board members, who say they can't run the event alone.
'In terms of volunteer needs, our festival always can use more help. So, if you want to help us out, we have two hour time slots from starting at 8 a.m. all the way to 6 p.m. We need help with set up. We need help with tear down. We need help making sure everybody knows where they're going and getting information from pride,' said Rachel Polan, president of Sioux Falls Pride.

Although the event is meant to promote LGBTQ+ pride, that doesn't mean allies aren't able to attend, or even help.
'You do not have to be part of the LGBTQ+ community to be a part of pride,' said Jack Fonder, marketing director for Sioux Falls Pride. 'That's something that we really like to let people know that you can be an ally, you can be, maybe you don't know much about the community, but you're wanting to learn more, or you're wanting to figure out how you can support the community more.'
Volunteer roles range from lining up floats for the parade, to picking up trash during the festival at Yankton Trail Park.
'You can help with sell merchandise, you can do concessions, you can run the kids' corner. And then we have some traffic direction at the end of the event just to make sure, because we can only have one way in and out of the festival,' said Polan.
And if you're attending the event, Polan says there will be plenty to see and do.
'With the stage event this year, we typically have drag shows all day, which we are still going to do. We're going to bring back Bingo in the Park. So that's been gone for a few years, but we're going to do that again. We're also going to have Sioux Empire Pit Rescue, talking with us and showing off the dogs,' said Polan.
The event will take place on June 14 The parade with start at 10 a.m. downtown followed by the festival from noon to 5 p.m. at Yankton Trail Park. New Mitchell High School nearing completion

MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO) — A few years ago, a large project began on the land across from the then-Mitchell High School. 'School officials at the time saw that the need for the building, fixes and things like that, size and space was all, reason enough to explore the option. I think the administration that was in place previously had been planning for a new building for a period of time. So, it got to a point where, okay, now it's time to to pull the trigger,' said Justin Siemsen, principal of Mitchell High School. Local artists set up shop at Washington Pavilion The new building is nearing completion, with some exterior projects being finished up. Siemsen says the school will be ready next month. 'Most of our classrooms are moved over with all the teachers' materials and desks and things like that. So, we will be continuing that moving process throughout the next few weeks. And so, we're hoping that, middle of July, we'll have things situated where they need to be and ready to hit the ground running this fall,' said Siemsen. Although the new Mitchell High School is only across the street from the old school, it will allow students easier access to the football field and Career and Technical Academy. 'We had kids that were across the street of our main school, and then they would come over here for all of our Career Technical stuff. And so that eliminates the need for for movement and during the wintertime and things like that, that'll take that problem off the table,' said Siemsen. Once the building is finished, the school plans to welcome the community in for a tour. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Local artists set up shop at Washington Pavilion

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Artists from all walks of life will have their works on display this weekend at the Washington Pavilion in downtown Sioux Falls. The Everist Gallery at Washington Pavilion is currently brimming with artwork by local artists. 'It's all about them and it's all about them selling their work,' lead curator Jana Anderson said. Jana Anderson is the lead curator at the Pavilion and says more than 70 artists are showcasing their works during the Art Collective. 'It's such a variety, from crafts people to fine artists, we've got ceramics and crocheted works and fine art paintings, it's like the whole spectrum of the arts of people that are makers here in Sioux Falls,' Anderson said. 'I'm a painter and a photographer, but what inspires me is the mixing of organic and geometric,' local artist Em Nguyen said. Nguyen is a local artist with a passion for animals. 'I really love surreal paintings but I don't necessarily want to play by the rules of having to be realistic, so I kind of want to morph my own version of that into nature,' Nguyen said. Nguyen is actually the creative force behind the Art Collective, starting the event nearly 15 years ago as a way to workshop with other artists. 'For us to connect, to build off of each other, to feel like 'wow, look here, polish that up', to learn from each other because we were all kind of separated, so it is a great place to connect community-wise creatively,' Nguyen said. The multi-day event is also an opportunity for people to buy or win a piece of art. 'Each artist should have a raffle piece that you can sign up for and have the opportunity to win something really amazing,' Anderson said. The Art Collective is open until 7 Friday night, and continues Saturday from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Washington Pavilion. Admission to the event is free. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
