Sioux Falls Pride looking for volunteers

Yahoo2 days ago

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The pride parade and festival in Sioux Falls relies on over 100 volunteers, but around half of those positions still aren't filled. The group is made up of five board members, who say they can't run the event alone.
'In terms of volunteer needs, our festival always can use more help. So, if you want to help us out, we have two hour time slots from starting at 8 a.m. all the way to 6 p.m. We need help with set up. We need help with tear down. We need help making sure everybody knows where they're going and getting information from pride,' said Rachel Polan, president of Sioux Falls Pride.
Lincoln County still best prison site, consultant says
Although the event is meant to promote LGBTQ+ pride, that doesn't mean allies aren't able to attend, or even help.
'You do not have to be part of the LGBTQ+ community to be a part of pride,' said Jack Fonder, marketing director for Sioux Falls Pride. 'That's something that we really like to let people know that you can be an ally, you can be, maybe you don't know much about the community, but you're wanting to learn more, or you're wanting to figure out how you can support the community more.'
Volunteer roles range from lining up floats for the parade, to picking up trash during the festival at Yankton Trail Park.
'You can help with sell merchandise, you can do concessions, you can run the kids' corner. And then we have some traffic direction at the end of the event just to make sure, because we can only have one way in and out of the festival,' said Polan.
And if you're attending the event, Polan says there will be plenty to see and do.
'With the stage event this year, we typically have drag shows all day, which we are still going to do. We're going to bring back Bingo in the Park. So that's been gone for a few years, but we're going to do that again. We're also going to have Sioux Empire Pit Rescue, talking with us and showing off the dogs,' said Polan.
The event will take place on June 14 The parade with start at 10 a.m. downtown followed by the festival from noon to 5 p.m. at Yankton Trail Park. Pickleball, yoga among activities at downtown event

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A summer series in downtown Sioux Falls is opening the streets to pedestrians. The event launched in May and will happen during First Fridays through August. A mother's message after loss The sound of pickleball will be coming to a stretch of Phillips Avenue this week. Remedy Pickleball Pub will offer a pop-up pickleball court Friday night in the Raven parking lot. 'We'll have it taped off with the lines and nets out and some loaner paddles and balls and just have the opportunity to come an play and learn the game a little bit,' Remedy Pickleball Manager Geneva Olson said. The pop-up court is one of many activities at this month's Open Streets event happening on Phillips Avenue between 6th and 7th streets. The June event is all about wellness. 'Put on your shorts and your T-shirts. We're going to be doing crossfit, we're going to be doing yoga. There's actually going to be a monster truck here, which is not really wellness related, just fun. There's going to be face painting, kids activities, Parks and Rec will be coming out with their mobile rec unit,' Downtown Sioux Falls CEO Brandon Hanson said. Hanson says the events are designed to bring people together, drive foot traffic to businesses, and inform future development. 'This is pretty underdeveloped. If you have ever walked in this stretch of Phillips Avenue, there's not retail, there's not food and beverage. It's really kind of this desert in downtown and we want to show that it doesn't have to be that way, and there's future projects that are being talked about in these blocks, so what does it look like when we fill it with people and design it to be people first?' Hanson said. And pickleball is just one of the reasons you may want to check it out. 'You can be 70 and play this game and you can be 15 and play this game and have fun. And so it's really an awesome opportunity for people to get out and get moving. Be social,' Olson said. The Open Streets events are put on by DTSF and AARP South Dakota. It runs from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. That portion of Phillips will be closed to drivers starting around 4 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. One year away: SD's 2026 gubernatorial primary

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — One year from South Dakota's gubernatorial primary in 2026, the race is beginning to take shape. 'I've been there advocating for the people, for their rights, for their families, for their freedoms, and I don't back down,' Republican Jon Hansen of the Dell Rapids area said May 28. Hansen, who serves as speaker of the House of Representatives in Pierre, has officially thrown his name in the ring. Structure damage, split trees left behind after storm 'As we go out and we spread the message about putting the people first in South Dakota again, the reception is just overwhelmingly positive,' Hansen said. 'We're really happy to see it.' The 39-year-old lawyer, who formally announced his candidacy in late April, says voters want relief from property taxes. 'The people of the state want to see their government trimmed down, trim the fat,' Hansen said. 'They see what's going on in Washington with DOGE, and they want a South Dakota DOGE, and that's something that we've committed to doing.' Toby Doeden of Aberdeen, chair of the conservative political action committee Dakota First Action, has also filed paperwork to run for the governor's office. He has not responded to interview requests from KELOLAND News to talk with him about his gubernatorial plans. His website describes him as 'a proven conservative,' and Doeden Investment Group's website lists him as its president. As far as who might join Doeden and Hansen, some bigger names in South Dakota politics are potentially in the mix. For one, there's the current occupant of the governor's office: 66-year-old Republican Larry Rhoden. He rose to the position following former Gov. Kristi Noem's departure to become secretary of the Department of Homeland Security with the federal government. 'I think campaigns are too long and too expensive, and I think people get really tired of them,' Rhoden said May 29. 'So, I've really focused on just doing a good job and getting around the state and meeting people. So, we're not going to make any announcements anytime soon.' The man whom Noem defeated in South Dakota's Republican gubernatorial primary in 2018, 54-year-old Marty Jackley of Pierre who is currently the state's attorney general, is also on the record as a potential candidate. 'I'm considering it, but right now I'm focused on doing the job that South Dakotans elected me to do, and that is to be the best attorney general I can be to keep our streets and communities safe,' Jackley said May 27. Another possible candidate is the man who has held South Dakota's only seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington since 2019: 48-year-old Republican Dusty Johnson of Mitchell. 'Certainly getting a lot of encouragement across the state to run for governor,' Johnson said April 22. 'I'm not worried about that right now. I do give it a little bit of consideration every once in a while, but day in and day out, I really need to be focused on my day job.' No Democratic candidates have yet announced their candidacy for South Dakota governor. After the primary election of June 2, 2026, the general election is scheduled for Nov. 3. Taqueria González takes over former Burger Time

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Another food truck in Sioux Falls has made the move inside to a brick-and-mortar storefront. The old Burger Time building on West 12th Street is once again serving up food, only this time it's offering Mexican-style hamburguesas and hot dogs, along with tacos, burritos and more. Prison consultant does Q and A on Tuesday Ricardo González opened up Taqueria González this past weekend as a physical location for his food truck that's been running for almost two years. We stopped in to talk to him about his new space and his sister-in-law, Audrey Chavez, provided his translation. 'He said that he wanted to make Taqueria González a bigger place, a place where people could come and enjoy the food because when he had the food truck, it was a lot of going to them or they had to come to us because we would end up switching locations,' Chavez said while translating for González. 'He just wanted a bigger location where everyone could come and enjoy the food, sit down, talk a little bit, get to know us.' González says moving from a food truck to a physical location has also allowed him to expand his menu. Some of the new food options include Mexican-style tortas from his home city of Zacatecas in Central Mexico, as well as family platters and Menudo soup. He says many of his recipes come from his mom. 'He said he just wants them to come try out the food, get to know us and we'll take care of them with the best service that we are able to give,' Chavez said while translating for González. You can order from Taqueria González by walking up to the window, going through the drive-thru or online through DoorDash. As for the food truck, González says that will still be available for special events or if he gets enough staff to manage both spots, the truck will be moving around the city again.
