Jersey Mike's Month of Giving in Bakersfield raises $79k
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Jersey Mike's said it raised $79,000 from all of its stores in Bakersfield last month during the Month of Giving fundraiser.
The sandwich chain partners with more than 200 local charities each year for its nationwide fundraiser. In Bakersfield, Jersey Mike's partnered with the Ronald McDonald House, which provides a 'home away from home' for local families with critically ill children who are hospitalized.
'We've been able to work with the Ronald McDonald house in the past but we've never had this large of an amount,' franchise owner Stacy Knight said.
Jersey Mike's Month of Giving is an annual fundraiser that happens every March.

Union Pacific Railroad names Tehachapi as ‘Train Town USA'
TEHACHAPI, Calif. (KGET) — Move over Thomas, and hold onto your caboose cause it's official: Tehachapi is known as Train Town U.S.A. Peggy YgBuhay with Union Pacific said, ''Union Pacific Railroad does grant Tehachapi, California the title of, 'Train Town USA.' You can clap.'' The Tehachapi Depot is celebrating 15 years since restoring the museum that was destroyed in a fire in July 2008 caused from bottle rockets. Tehachapi Mayor, Joan Pogon-Cord, said, 'My husband, he was a deputy sheriff at that time, told me. It was like a knife to my heart.' It took $2 million to restore the historic building two years later. The biggest draw in Train Town isn't the museum with one heck of a moving exhibit. It's the engineering feat, known as the Tehachapi Loop. V.P. Marlan Woodside with Friends of Tehachapi Depot said, 'The purpose of the loop is to raise the track from a bottom of 77 feet up to the top rail in a distance of 4,000 feet.' Pride runs deep in Tehachapi, and part of that pride is because of the Tehachapi Loop, where up to 40 trains a day make the trek. It's an engineering marvel, and part of the reason why the depot is celebrating 15 years. Founder of Friends of Tehachapi Depot, Doug Prickard said, 'In 2026, it'll be the 150th anniversary of when this track was originally built.' People from all over the world marvel at man's defiance against gravity with this historic track. People even get married at the Tehachapi Loop. Ron & Becky Wilson are train tourists from Oregon. They marvel at the site of the Tehachapi Loop. 'All of a sudden we heard a whistle down the way, and another train came,' said Becky. 'So, made the loop, and then the other one started going and passed each other on the loop. It was really fun.' Up to 10,000 guests a year sign the guest book at the Tehachapi Train Depot. Depot staff say at last report, the museum has seen up to 150,000 visitors. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. McDonald's restaurants in New Hampshire raise $1 million for Ronald McDonald House
Customers at 14 McDonald's restaurants in New Hampshire have collectively raised $1 million for Ronald McDonald House charities. "You know, every bit counts," said Michael Gambino who owns the 14 restaurants. "The 20 cents, the 30 cents, it really adds up and we've had our eyes set on reaching this million dollars." Customers round up on receipts The money was raised, in part, by having customers round up on their receipts. "I'm just so incredibly proud of all of our employees," said Gambino. "I'm so thankful to our customers for their round up dollars. Our company is just extremely passionate about the Ronald McDonald House charities, the mission and really helping families stay close to the hospital." The nonprofit provides families with a place to stay when their children are undergoing treatment in hospitals. "6,000 nights of stay" "Our whole mission is to keep families close while their children are going through critical medical care," said Lauren Hoops-Schmieg, the CEO of RMHC New England. "We don't ask families to pay a single dollar to stay with us. A million dollars provides 6,000 nights of stay. So that makes a huge impact when there's so much stress." Teamwork and some friendly competition were the keys to this success. "We looked at this as an opportunity to help families with sick children," said area supervisor Drew Turner. "So the stores got involved and the general managers, who were very competitive, would go out each and every day and every week to see how much money they could actually raise." "Every little penny helps. This is the first time our chapter has ever had a McDonald's owner operator be able to say, 'Here's a million dollars,'" said Hoops-Schmieg. Turner said their next plan is to go bigger. "Hopefully, we'll get more people involved in this and we can take this to an even higher level," he said.

Another Rite Aid location to close in Bakersfield as chain whittles itself down by 500 stores nationwide
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — One by one, it may seem, Bakersfield-area Rite Aid stores are closing, part of a series of shutdowns as the 1,200-store chain scales back its nationwide footprint amid its second bankruptcy in as many years. The Philadelphia-based company, once the third-largest drug store chain in the country, announced Tuesday it was closing its store at Ming and South H, putting 21 jobs in jeopardy – this, just a day after it formalized the pending closure, in about a month, of stores at Mount Vernon and Bernard Street and Panama Lane near Old River Road. It was also announced the location at 11200 Olive Drive would be closing on July 7. Altogether, Rite Aid announced 111 store closures Tuesday, bringing the grand total to 500 thus far, nationwide. GoFundMe created for family of woman allegedly killed by ex-partner during graduation party Shelves were almost barren and customers were few at the Rite Aid on South H, and employees indicated off camera that additional Bakersfield area Rite Aids would eventually close. That certainly looked to be possible at the downtown Rite Aid at 23rd and H, where shelves were as barren as those on South H. Fans of Rite Aid's iconic Thrifty ice cream counter had to be disappointed – that show is over, although the downtown store had cartons of a half dozen flavors still in the freezer case. Thrifty ice cream, for now anyway, appears to be a do it yourself affair. The news is better for Rite Aid's pharmacy operation. Rite Aid said on May 15th it 'successfully entered into a series of sale agreements and pharmacy services transition agreements' that will transfer pharmacy assets from more than 1,000 Rite Aid locations to CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Albertsons, Kroger and other operators. What becomes of Rite Aid's physical stores and its employees is less clear. Rite Aid has said it will transfer affected employees wherever possible. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
