Corteo By Cirque Du Soleil Announces More New Zealand Tour Dates Due To Exceptional Demand

Scoop20-05-2025

AUCKLAND NZ, Wednesday 21 May, 2025 - The beloved Cirque du Soleil production Corteo has today announced additional shows for the New Zealand leg of its global tour this October.
With tickets flying out the door, seven extra shows have been added to the Auckland season — giving Kiwis even more chances to experience the excitement, wonder, and magic of Corteo!
Within New Zealand, Corteo is heading exclusively to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, and is set to charm Aotearoa audiences for the very first time. This exceptional show, directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, first premiered in Montreal under the Big Top in April 2005 and features a double-sided stage where audiences face each other. Since its creation, Corteo has amazed over 12 million spectators, in 30 countries, on four continents. Corteo will be presented in Auckland for 13 shows at Spark Arena from October 30, 2025, with no further extension possible.
Corteo, which means corteg e in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the artist, with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity, situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.
In a Cirque du Soleil first, the stage is central in the arena dividing the venue, with each half of the audience facing the other half, giving a unique perspective not only of the show, but also a performer's eye view of the audience. An atmosphere like never seen before in Cirque du Soleil arena shows.

From Diddy to Trump: The NY courtroom artist who's sketched them all

From Mafia bosses and Hollywood predators to crypto criminals and presidents, New York courtrooms have seen it all. But unlike New Zealand courtrooms, news cameras are not allowed in The Empire State's judicial precincts. That means there are two main ways for the news to report inside the courtroom of some of the biggest criminal and civil cases ever – one of those methods is typing out court reports (or for the old school journos, filling out notepads with shorthand). The other option is creating courtroom art. Kiwis have probably seen a lot of these from our reporting over the years of US court cases. These cartoon-styled images have to do many things at once. Capture a moment. Convey a feeling. Show a story. All with the same journalistic rules of fairness, accuracy, and balance. ADVERTISEMENT A courtroom sketch by Jane Rosenberg. (Source: 1News) It's a craft that few ever take their hand to, and even fewer perfect. But one of the country's most prolific and well-respected courtroom artists is Jane Rosenberg. I caught up with her after court finished for the day during the trial of music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, known as P Diddy. "I did all the big cases there ever were here in New York," she told me. "John Gotti — mafia, Martha Stewart, police brutality cases, all the terrorism cases we've had. And all the MeToo cases. I did Cosby two times; I did Harvey Weinstein. R Kelly and now P Diddy — and Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein," she listed. That list grows longer by the year – Rosenberg has also covered Donald Trump's trials, crypto-boss Sam Bankman-Fried, and Sarah Palin's defamation case against the New York Times. A court sketch from Donald Trump's trial. (Source: Breakfast) ADVERTISEMENT Around 45 years after creating her first piece, she told me it was a career she fell into — almost by accident. "I was always an artist — I was a starving artist, drawing Rembrandt and Vermeer right on the sidewalk with a hat out for money for the 10 years after I graduated college. I didn't know how to make money,' she said. "And then I went to a lecture by another courtroom artist at the Society of Illustrators. And I said 'oh, this looks like so much fun. I'd love to do that. I just don't know if I'm good enough'." A lawyer friend took her to night court – not far from where we chatted – and bombarded the court officers with questions. Where do the artists sit? What do they bring? Eventually they told her to come back in a week, and they'd let her sit with the media. After phoning around – including the new TV startup CNN - she struck gold with NBC. "They said come in and show us what you got – and then they kept calling me and the other stations kept calling me. That's how it all started."

Freeview Satellite TV Brings Hd Viewing To More New Zealanders

Press Release – Freeview TV With HD already available on its terrestrial service (accessed via UHF aerials) and its Streaming TV app, Freeview has now extended high-resolution viewing to Kiwis who tune in with a satellite dish. Freeview is pleased to announce that high definition (HD) viewing is now available on its free satellite TV service, delivering a much-anticipated upgrade for viewers across Aotearoa. With HD already available on its terrestrial service (accessed via UHF aerials) and its Streaming TV app, Freeview has now extended high-resolution viewing to Kiwis who tune in with a satellite dish. This upgrade follows the successful migration to a new satellite, bringing two major improvements: Freeview's satellite TV service was upgraded to DVB-S2, a newer and more efficient transmission standard. The move unlocked more satellite capacity, overcoming earlier bandwidth limitations that had restricted HD delivery over satellite. These technical advances have paved the way for HD on satellite, strengthening Freeview's commitment to providing free, high-quality television for all Kiwis. Leon Mead, Freeview GM, says the collaboration between Freeview and broadcasters is key in making HD over satellite a reality. Broadcasters must update how their channels are transmitted to enable HD. TVNZ has led the charge, becoming the first broadcaster to roll out HD channels over Freeview's satellite service. 'We are delighted with TVNZ's decision to upgrade their satellite channels to HD, making access to great local content better than ever for the hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders who watch free satellite TV.' says Mead. As of yesterday, viewers can enjoy the following channels in HD: TVNZ 2 nationwide DUKE nationwide TVNZ 1 HD in Northland & Auckland, enhanced picture quality elsewhere with MPEG4. Warner Bros. Discovery is also planning to move some channels to HD – more details will be shared at a later date.
