CM Mamata Banerjee reviews Rath Yatra readiness in Digha; urges caution amid huge crowd influx

DIGHA: Chief minister
Mamata Banerjee
on Thursday oversaw preparedness for Friday's Rath Yatra in Digha and extensively reviewed crowd-management measures, asking police to stay alert to avert any stampede-like situation.
More than 2.5 lakh people are expected to participate in the seaside town's first chariot festival after the inauguration of the Jagannath temple.
Banerjee, who reached Digha on Wednesday to keep tabs on arrangements, said the Yatra would begin at 2.30pm and proceed along a barricaded route. A 750-metre stretch from Jagannath Dham to Masir Bari at the old Jagannath temple has been barricaded. Around 3,000 policemen will be deployed along the route.
'People will not be allowed on the road to pull the chariots. All devotees will stay behind barricades to avoid any risk of stampede,' the CM said, adding that the chariots' ropes would be extended towards the barricades for people to touch them.
The announcement came after Banerjee held an administrative meeting that was attended by ministers Aroop Biswas, Chandrima Bhattacharya and Sujit Bose and senior district and police officials.

'People can visit the temple. There is no issue if they arrive early, but they must leave after the visit. It is difficult to accommodate a large number of people at once on the temple premises. This is the first time we are organising this festival. We request that both Yatra days (Friday and July 5) be peaceful. All preparations have been made. The Yatra will conclude by 4 pm,' the CM said.
Radharaman Das, a trustee of Digha Jagannath Dham and vice-president of ISKCON Kolkata, said, 'The CM is personally monitored the situation to ensure there are no problems due to the crowd surge.'
On Thursday, Digha was bursting at the seams as thousands of people poured in and every hotel room in and around the seaside town was booked. Bipradash Chakraborty, joint secretary of Digha Sankarpur Hotelier's Association said hotel occupancy was over 70% on Thursday and was expected to be over 90% on Friday when more devotees reach the town to witness the festival.' Late on Thursday, at least 200 buses packed with devotees left Kolkata for Digha.
'I was visiting my home in Gujarat for a week and on learning about the chariot festival here, I decided to visit the town. I have been to Puri earlier, but being part of Digha's first Ratha Yatra would be a memorable experience,' said Anwar Shah, who lives in California.
Swati Dey from Kasba, who reached Digha on Thursday said, 'We could not come here when the temple was opened in April. So, we decided to visit the temple during Ratha Yatra. We booked the hotel last month.'

FASTag ANNUAL PASS SCHEME: UP registers strong response as 30K pvt vehicles activate facility

Uttar Pradesh has registered a strong response to the newly launched FASTag Annual Pass, with around 30,000 private vehicles activating the facility and more than 21,000 toll crossings recorded in just two days till August 16. Officials clarified that activations represent vehicles purchasing the pass, while transactions reflect actual toll use, meaning many new pass holders were yet to make highway trips. (For Representation) According to official data from the National Highway Authority of India, UP West (Lucknow Zone) accounted for 18,136 transactions, while UP East (Varanasi Zone) reported 3,106 transactions, reflecting the state's heavy highway traffic and the early appeal of the scheme. Officials clarified that activations represent vehicles purchasing the pass, while transactions reflect actual toll use, meaning many new pass holders were yet to make highway trips. 'Nationally, as well as in UP, the new scheme has evoked a very encouraging response from the road users with around 30,000 annual Fast Tag activation in UP alone in the first two days till August 16,' NHAI member (administration) and senior IAS officer Vishal Chauhan told HT over the phone. 'Nationally, more than 1.4 lakh users subscribed on the launch day itself, and by the afternoon of August 17, the figure had crossed 4 lakh activations, resulting in over 4.25 lakh toll-free crossings across India,' he revealed. Rolled out nationwide from August 15 following amendments to the National Highways Fee Rules, the Annual Pass can be activated on an existing FASTag through the Rajmargyatra mobile app at a one-time cost of ₹3,000. 'Once activated, it offers either one year of toll-free travel or up to 200 crossings, whichever comes earlier, across designated National Highway (NH) and Expressway plazas,' Chauhan said. According to another NHAI official, the strong showing in Uttar Pradesh in the first two days underlines the importance of its extensive highway network. 'The Annual Pass is giving frequent travellers cost certainty and making digital tolling more attractive,' he said. The list of plazas where the pass is valid has been published on the NHAI website. The annual pass is valid only on national highway and national expressway fee plazas. With momentum building both in UP and nationally, the officials expect the Annual Pass to become a game-changer for private vehicle commuters, making road travel more affordable and seamless. 'The Annual Pass Scheme for non-commercial vehicles marks a major step in making highway usage more affordable and convenient for road users,' Chauhan said. 'Average cost per trip comes down to ₹15 from ₹100' Rollout of the National Highways Authority of India's annual FASTag system for private cars with effect from August 15 midnight reduces the average cost per trip significantly. 'The average toll cost per trip with this system comes down to ₹15 from the usual ₹100, making it far more economical for frequent travelers,' said Colonel Sharad Singh, NHAI project director. 'It's a commuter-friendly step designed to blend affordability with efficiency.' As many as 1173 annual FASTag passes were activated on the first day and 2235 on the second day in the Lucknow region. Once activated, the annual FASTag sends real-time SMS notifications to users every time a toll is crossed, informing them of the remaining trip balance. Vehicle owners are required to affix the FASTag sticker on the windshield; failure to do so could result in the tag being blacklisted. Only private four-wheelers are eligible for this facility. Vehicles using chassis numbers to obtain FASTags must ensure that their registration number is updated in the system to qualify for the annual plan. Monthly passes to co-exist Those living within 20 km of a toll plaza who currently use monthly passes will continue to enjoy the same benefits. Toll journeys made during the validity of a monthly pass will not count against the 200-trip annual limit. However, if the monthly pass balance runs out, deductions will be made from the annual tag.

‘Investment in future of Delhi': CM thanks PM Modi for construction of UER-II

Ahead of the inauguration of Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) on Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its construction. 'UER-II is not just an infrastructure project… It is an investment in the future of Delhi. It will improve traffic flow, cut travel time drastically, and uplift the quality of life for lakhs of people living in Delhi and NCR,' the CM asserted. The UER-II, the CM underlined, will emerge as the backbone of high-speed connectivity, linking Delhi not just with the National Capital Region (NCR) but with the entire country. Travelling to Chandigarh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Jaipur and even Mumbai will become faster and more convenient. It is truly a 'transformative' project for the people of Delhi and beyond, Gupta said. The CM made the remarks as she visited the inauguration site, along with senior officials and party leaders, to review the preparations for Sunday's event. Describing the project as a 'historic gift' for the city, Gupta said that the commencement of UER-II will not move Delhi closer to becoming a 'traffic-free' Capital. She added that the corridor will play a vital role in reducing congestion, lowering vehicular pollution and thereby contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment. 'The pressure on Inner and Outer Ring Roads will be substantially reduced, while major junctions such as Mukarba Chowk, Madhuban Chowk, Peeragarhi Chowk, Dhaula Kuan and NH-9 will no longer face heavy congestion. This will be a huge relief for lakhs of daily commuters,' the CM said. Gupta said that the corridor will begin at National Highway-44 (Alipur), traverse through Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh and Dwarka, and terminate at National Highway-48 near Mahipalpur. It is also expected to reduce travel time between Singhu Border to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport from two hours to 40 minutes. The project will link to the industrial hubs of Sonipat and Bahadurgarh through dedicated link roads, giving a direct boost to industry and facilitating faster movement of goods, the CM highlighted. 'With smoother traffic flow and shorter travel time, fuel consumption will decrease significantly, contributing to lower emissions. The UER-II will directly aid in reducing air-pollution levels and improving the overall environment of the capital,' she underlined. A statement from the Prime Minister's office underlined that PM Modi will inaugurate two major National Highway projects worth a combined cost of nearly Rs.11,000 crore — the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II).

Karnataka govts study abroad scheme attracts over 5,000 aspirants

Bengaluru, Aug 16 (PTI) Over 5,000 students have already registered for the government's ambitious 'study abroad" initiative through the Karnataka Vocational Training and Skill Development Corporation (KVTSDC), the Department of Skill Development said on Saturday. Encouraging more participation, the department announced that students can still enroll by attending the day-long 'Study Abroad Expo" at Hotel Lalit Ashok on August 17. Over 60 international universities offering attractive academic opportunities for Karnataka students have already camped at the venue, officials said. To ease financial concerns, several public and private banks have set up stalls offering education loans at competitive interest rates, an official release said. Public undertaking Karnataka bank has assured the government of the most student-friendly financial packages. 'Studying abroad is no longer a privilege reserved for the wealthy. With our government's initiative, even students from economically weaker backgrounds can now pursue higher education overseas without financial burden. This is the first-of-its-kind initiative in India making global education accessible to all sections of society," said Karnataka Minister for Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Sharanaprakash Patil. Unlike private programmes that stops support once students leave India, the government-backed scheme guarantees continued assistance abroad-covering welfare, academic progress, and legal aid, the release said. The expo also ensures transparency, offering free guidance from university selection to post-departure support, without agency fees, it added.
